STD: Only Marginally Better than The Final Frontier

Historically, even Wesley was someone’s Trek Pin Up of choice. (My sister for example, before she moved onto Tom Paris in later years.)
My music teacher in high school had black and white pics of Wil Wheaton all along the walls of her classroom. This would have been in 1997.

It's odd the stuff you don't give a thought to when you're 13 that is highly disturbing in retrospect.

Where they promotional photos or.... like photos she took from the bushes in front of his house?

That is....
Let’s time travel to shout Kruges line at you and your classmates. It’s bound to help someone.

...

Hang on, doing the maths, if she’s a new qualified teacher, then she could have been roughly of an age with Wesley.
If not...

Man.
Disturbing.

I like Final Frontier more.
i agree but i do like both TFF and Discovery. TBPH I don't think Final Frontier deserves all the hate that it gets. Of course it's got its own problems (some of them glaringly obvious like the whole rocket boots sequence in the turbolift indicating 78 decks when the Connie actually only has 26, etc.) but its still a decent enough story.

Now Discovery is still a work in progress so we must in all absolute honesty give it a fair enough chance. All trek series from TNG onwards started a little bit bumpy and gradually got better and better and this may very well be the case with Discovery so I would ask that people please be patient and give it a chance.

She was most definitely not newly qualified.:ack:

TFF definitely has problems, but it might be the movie most in the spirit of TOS. Also, Laurence Luckinbill delivers a charismatic performance as Sybok that makes you see why people would follow him.

The Final Frontier is a trainwreck that Luckinbill somehow makes watchable.

I agree of course and I will be hopeful for season 2. I was disappointed by season 1, but I am hopeful Discovery will get better.

There is too many good TV shows now to wait around and hope Discovery gets better. This isn't the late-80's/early-90's where Trek was the only game in town.

Perhaps. But, I still want to see how it ends. There are very few shows I can say that about.

TFF is dogged by stupid fight scenes, Shat wisecracking early on, Nimoy nerve pinching a horse, lulz and slapstick humour on the bridge at the start, goofy production values..etc.

I think the plot is actually quite imaginative though and has a touch of TOS that hasn't been seen since TOS.

The scenes were Sybok tests the iconic trio to their core and is rebuffed are exquisite and the crowning point of the the most iconic friendships in all of science fiction. Shatner's acting in these observation deck scenes is absolutely first class. Nimoy, as he stands with his old friend and captain, rejecting Sybok's appeals, delivers very poignant dialogue.

The film wildly oscillates from abject garbage to the divine. It's a strange and in some ways this makes it a more frustrating film than if the film was just bad all the way through. But I like the film despite it's galling problems.

The film is worth it for that scene alone.

I really like them both quite a lot.

...But then, I also love TOS S3, the Kelvinverse films, Nemesis, a fair amount of Enterprise, and just about any other element of the franchise that is cool and "group-thinkish " to detest.

So whatever...

You do you, man. Clearly there is no consensus. Star Trek is both ruined right now, as well as exciting because there are 5 shows in development, or whatever. It is both the worst of times and the best of times. Charles Dickens had nothing on Star Trek fandom.

He was in his mid 20s in 1997, is that really disturbing?
