Personally, I loved the Micro Machine ships. I had a blast for hours with those.
My favorite as a kid was the 'Innerspace' version of the Enterprise with the mini-figs. (I could never have afforded the full scale Playmates Enterprise bridge playset at that age, so this was the coolest thing ever as far as I was concerned.)

Of course, when I became an adult and had a disposable income (and access to eBay), I eventually bought the full size version. Wish fulfilment.![]()

Brilliant! Been waiting for that since watching the first four episodes over Christmas."The Toys That Made Us" season two just landed on Netflix... first episode is Star Trek.
It gets some things wrong... like the run-time of TMP: which was 2:12 not closer to 2:30."The Toys That Made Us" season two just landed on Netflix... first episode is Star Trek.
That bugged me, too - guess they were thinking of the extended VHS version (more likely just bagging on TMP). They also seemed to imply the AMT Exploration Set came out much earlier than it did to make more jokes about crappy Trek products, not mentioning that it came out during the cartoon's run, which was the more likely reason they were child-sized.It gets some things wrong... like the run-time of TMP: which was 2:12 not closer to 2:30.
The best thing about the Playmates figures is how customisable they are. I had great fun making many figures that never came out. I wish they'd bring this line back and give us the characters who didn't make it into the line like the NX Enterprise crew and all the recurring characters from DS9.
Way back in the early 70's I had the AMT plastic model playset of the Communicator, phaser, and tricorder that barely resembled the actual items. As did my two friends that we played "Star Trek" together. We even put Velcro on the communicator and phaser so they could be fastened to our belts. We were only about ten.
Well, to be fair, according to the Netflix series, they DID make something like a couple hundred different figures for that line. Apart from Hasbro's Star Wars line, I can't imagine any action figure line based on a show or movie doing that many.
Apparently their decision to release 1,701 copies of certain figures backfired too, because it meant many collectors missing out on certain figures, prompting many of them to give up on completing their collections.
