Discovery only goes somewhere if one of two things (or both) happen:

1. The series becomes unprofitable due to a sudden and marked decline in CBS All Access subscriptions.
2. The suits at CBS have another Les Moonves moment and decide Trek just isn't worth the trouble anymore, at least for the time being.

Unless one or both happen during Season 2 this show isn't going anywhere. If CBS has proven anything over the years it's that whether a show is good or the worst thing since getting food poisoning in a Bangkok whorehouse it can stay on the air for a very long time.

One final note on Season 1: Saru. Tragically under-appreciated. He was a kind, authoritative, smart and BADASS leader when it came time to face off against both revealed Mirror Lorca and the Emperor's flagship. He motivated his crew, stuck by his principles and kicked butt. He is a fine and worthy character. Good for him!

As I have said repeatedly, he's not a fine and worthy character. Doug Jones is a terrific actor.

Ever since the 8th episode, Saru has been given basically zero development. His Kelpian nature has fallen to the background, and his relationship with Burnham has settled into cordial respect. But his role in the show has basically just transitioned into "the XO." 90% of his dialogue could have been said by anyone in the position of first officer. It's Jones which is elevating the material through performance, nothing less and nothing more.

I think it's time for a We Want Captain Saru petition to CBS

Yeah I made a comment on the CBS-AA thread about the economics/finance of this. One mistake I owned up to - Netflix is NOT as profitable (in real terms) as is commonly thought - my bad. But I have read certain other topics on a business blog for years, one being net neutrality. People in the USA need to be *very* worried. Yes at the moment everyone feels smug about a short-term subscription to CBSAA/whatever to binge watch.

But your ISP knows what you're downloading.
Who owns your ISP?
Does it have links with one of the streaming services or major Hollywood studios? Because if it does, and net neutrality does go (as seems to be the case) then you're gonna find that your ISP gives you "cheap/complimentary" access to a particular streaming services with HUGE prices for the others with no nice short-term options on them. And unless you are one of those (comparatively few) Americans with genuine choice of ISP then get used to getting a "bundle" of services not chosen by you, just like it was in the bad old days of TV/cable.

This is not a diatribe against your point - indeed I agree with you. I think ST is a *big* asset and CBSAA wants it to remain so, so it can "play with the big boys". But people need to be aware of the wider economics of net neutrality here and the nasty surprises in store.

How many of them new the real plan, or was it only her and Sarek? Did she get her water-vapor-bomb-thingy from one of the Black Badges?

Ill be honest I think she is nuts for switching gears with the fleet approaching earth with no defenses, to take the bomb from George-yo and hand it off to Loreal,

I mean I woulda stuck with the global destruction thing

Not a bad episode. Wraps everything up, a bit cheesy with the speeches but whatever. Liked that ship at the end ;)

Well... I was half-hoping this would be the JJverse, but looks like this finale discounted that theory! Nice ship design, of course!

Me too, but behind all the good feels, it kind of did and remains a backup plan.

So reset buttons are good thing now?.

In this particular case, as long as the Discovery crew survived with memories intact, yes, it would have been better. Particularly if they went back to BotBS and did something different - like having Ash and L'Rell convince T'Kumva not to attack. The conclusion would basically have been (from the perspective of the characters) that the entire war was a giant mistake which was damaging to both the Klingons and the Federation.

That sounds like some horrible writing.
Don't quit your day job.

If you're not going to use a reset button then having only 20% of Federation territory occupied by the Klingons suddenly makes a lot more sense in a ten-year recovery of the fleet to the levels we see in the TOS and TOS Movie eras. One could even conjecture that the loss of a third of Starfleet's frontline vessels is a driving motivation behind the Connie refit and other starship designs that enter service by the 2270s.

After the War of 2256-57 the Federation doesn't want to get caught with its pants down again.

Saving for posterity.
