As long as he loves Stamets, I can live with that.
I hate to say this, but I wouldn't be surprised if MU Stamets and Cruz are long dead, having been euthanized earlier in life upon the empire discovering their homosexuality.

Maybe, maybe not. From past MU episodes (ugh), it seems that pansexuality and homosexuality aren't necessarily taboo. In fact, the previous incarnations lean pretty heavily on them, possibly as an indicator of how twisted the universe is (again, ugh). I think as long as they're human, the Terran Empire wouldn't necessarily care, though I could be wrong.

You may be right - honestly I was never a big fan of MU episodes so I don't remember many details. With that said, Discovery has done the best take on the MU in Trek thus far IMO.

All the comments about Mary Wiseman and Tilly’s appearance are absolutely disgusting. I dare everyone who posted them to post pictures of themselves. I doubt they will, most are probably in worst shape themselves while having an incredibly sexist idea of how women should look. This is also why they’ll never find a partner, insane standards.

LOL. Why are you trying to label Mary Wiseman's look as some ideal 'norm' for women... it really shouldn't be.
That's the equivalent of asking all men to look like Neelix (LOL), she's basically the female equivalent.

She's a goofy comedic relief character played by a goofy looking actress. Melissa McCarthy in space.

Nothing more, nothing less.

My bigger issue with this character is that she exists to begin with, and does not fit with the structure of the series, and that she's a 30 something year old Cadet....awkward.

You have a really toxic and sexist view of women.

Until now, I couldn't definitively pin down Lorca. I was mostly sure he was from the mirror universe. There was a moment in this episode that completely verified that all of the "where the hell are we?" stuff is an act. Burnham(was it Burnham? Maybe Saru?) suggests looking back through the navigational records to see what went wrong. He immediately cuts her off with his own theory and how to proceed, covering up his deed. This can only delay the inevitable discovery of his "override."

Lorca couldn't be from the Mirror Universe. He actually shows some remorse for his actions, like when he murdered his crew (really messed up).

I think they're eventually setting Lorca up to be an irredeemable villain that Sonequa has to overpower.... so making him simply a Mirror version would be a big copout.

When it comes to Tilly and her looks am I the only one who thinks when they cast the character they must have been partially inspired by Colm Meaney as Chief O'Brien? Both sort of have the normal not suped up Hollywood look and both are basically the everyman on the show. Also as Ds9 moved forward the Chief O'Brien character somewhat evolved and got to a point where he and the Bashir character were basically a tandem or a team and became even less individual based. Tilly also sort of works that way with being Burnham's friend.

My only gripe is that it that it plays into a trope people don't talk much about and that is the cool/sexy lead and his/her normal/plain best friend or sidekick. That goes all they way back to character duo's such as Zach Morris/Screech, Bart Simpsons/Milhouse and so forth. Even Bashir and O'Brien sort of work on that level. I do think it's works somewhat here because Burnham is a hard character to like because she tends to be kind of cold and unfeeling because of her Vulcan upbringing. Makes sense to bring in someone that is very likeable and someone the audience feels they could get along with if they were real people and they encountered them. As Burnham becomes more likeable I am sure the Tilly character will evolve and become more mature. The Bashir/O'Brien friendship also worked like that once Bashir moved beyond the young horndog/naive guy he was when the show first started. He no longer needed to be a sex symbol and could be seen as just a guy.

Not at all. I'm just telling it how it is, without any bias.

She's a goofy comedic character. They picked an actress that fit that mold. Like I said, Melissa McCarthy in space.

Personally, I can tell they did it on purpose because past Trek shows have always cast traditionally attractive women in the lead roles (Tpol, Hoshi, Uhura [hot when she was young], Troi, Seven, Jadzia, etc].

Now that there are female and gay producers they are pushing a new agenda. It is what it is.

The only hot female on the STD cast is buried in makeup, playing the Airium alien, lol. That was intentional I'm sure. I'm cool with it, the show has bigger problems than what the actors look like.

It’s funny who everyone who “tells it like it is” only says horrifically sexist, racist, bigoted things. It’s almost like it’s an attempt to cover up shitty behavior that’s now being rightfully shunned by pretending to be a brave hero saying what others are afraid to say. Sorry, it isn’t “how it is”. It’s sexist and toxic dribble.

Nothing I said was. You're just over-sensitive, and overreacting. : )

It's hard to deny my previous point that her casting is a drastic and intentionally drastic departure from what has come before.

But if they are casting for a goofy female Neelix type, she fits the mold, no doubt.

I can see your point but you do realize that the comic relief character has evolved over the years don't you? The are allowed to show other normal human aspects than just being their to be funny. Some like Rodney McKay and the Doctor from "Doctor Who" are even able to be the stars of those shows even if those shows are not pure comedic shows. Plus she is serving muliple roles on the show. Comic relief/everyman and friend or sidekick. I also expect the character to grow as the show moves forward and the character is not going to be a static character that never changes.

I'm not sure the captain thing will work out. I'm not sure it's a good idea to have two of your characters with identical arcs which is what you sort of get because people also expect Burnham to become a Captain. Not sure what angle they might go for. I could see her becoming the chief engineer or something unexpected. I would personally consider making her loose her ability to walk and become handicapped character. Trek has touched on that issue only in small margins. Even LaForge not being able to see was kind of minimized by giving him a visor. Basically you can take what happend to Captain Pike but explore it on a regular basis. Of course this is sci-fi so if you ever want to fix her condition after a season or so you always have sci-fi magic to do that as well.

Enough with your toxic comments.

Infraction for trolling. Comments to PM.

The franchise replaced Miles O'Brien with a version of himself from several hours into his own future, and exact duplicates of Harry Kim and Naomi Wildman created by a spatial scission replaced the "original" Harry and Naomi when they were both killed. Anything's possible.
wat

I don't remember the Kim/Wildman thing. What ep was that?
