If the rumor ends up being wrong, I'll give it a fair shot. But, if the rumor is true then that's it. I'll be hate watching, but there is zero chance that the shit in that rumor won't be the worst thing to happen to the franchise. The bad thing is that it will also hurt to have the first female Doctor's debut series be complete shit.

I'll hope the rumor is wrong, and if it is he has a good chance of doing something good. But if its right, obviously he's just took a giant crap on the franchise. That premise doesn't work, period. Until the rumor gets confirmed or denied, it could go either way. I'm just saying that if it does go the bad way, and Chibnail is someone I can see doing something this shit, then the show is royally screwed and he'll be the worst showrunner/producer the franchise has had (outside of possibly Cartmel, although even his era had one or two decent stories mostly by accident).

"Just for one season" is a BS excuse when Doctor Who has few episodes per season and a huge amount of time between seasons. Its not like a lot of shows in the US that run for 22-ish weeks (with an off air month in the middle, usually) and have, what, half a year in between seasons? This is a show that will randomly take a year off because it can. Its like if Sherlock had a series where Benedict Cumberbatch was playing Sherlock going to clown school and solving only one case (at the clown school) over the three episodes. Even if its just one season of crap, when the show is rarely on its a big issue.

You clearly can't see that you aren't giving him a fair shot. You aren't even bothering to see if's a well executed idea, you hate the idea itself--based on a rumor. That's not a fair shot. That's a biased shot.

Ratings don't tell the difference between hate watching and joyful watching, so... [BBCAmerica] Thanks for watching! [/BBCAmerica]

You literally don't know that. You THINK it doesn't work, you don't LIKE the idea, but, you LITERALLY cannot know if it works or not without seeing the execution.

But, as you said, you'll be watching anyway. So, I guess it doesn't matter much.

I know I would gladly watch a whole season of Benedict Cumberbatch at clown school, regardless of length.

You keep presenting ideas as if they're automatically awful, but they keep sounding great to me.

    Otherwise, everything Professor Zoom said.

An idea relies on the execution in order to be truly judged.

How many movies sounded good based on the idea and then sucked? Prometheus leaps to mind. Batman V Superman also leaps to mind. Man of Steel.... *shudder*

It can't be a well executed idea, because its a shit idea. I don't need to see it. There isn't bias against a shit idea, its being realistic. I'm also being extremely fair. If the rumor is false, it won't effect my judgement of the season. Chibnail will be proven a decent producer/writer (well, uless the season sucks but in a different way) who stumbled a bit with his earlier stuff but grew over the years. If the rumor is true, then that just means that Chibnail is a hack and this rumor gave me early warning of the destruction of Doctor Who by the idiot who wrote Cyberwoman. It can go either way at this point, and I'll accept either one.

    :shifty: Watching doesn't mean supporting.

Yes, I can. Like if the rumor was "The 13th Doctor is a hooker with an interest in cannibalism". A lot of ideas just can't work. The current rumor is easily one of the worst ideas for really any sci fi show I'v watched, and its literally impossible to make it work in a way that's not complete crap.

Really? Because Torchwood Miracle Day literally revolved around a magical anus that ran through the centre of the Earth and made people immortal, so The Doctor splintered into three and trapped in three time periods really doesn't sound that bad.

If you seriously believe this you shouldn't watch it. I'm not kidding, we all have a finite amount of time on this planet and none of us should be doing stuff we don't want to do. Watching something just so you can hate it isn't remotely healthy. Either you go into season 11 with reservations but an open mind, or just bug out before it even airs. I get there's loyalty to a show, I mean I sat through four seasons of Enterprise and if that hadn't been a Trek show I think I'd have given up some point in season 2, but I did actually like some of it.

You know what, if the idea is true it might be terrible, it might be brilliant, it might be, meh. Very few things are completely irredeemable. Season 8 was pretty poor but did have a couple of episodes I liked, same with 7B.

Yeah. I'm not sure about this. For me, fine, its a different approach and I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but serialised telly doesn't tend to have much rewatch appeal.

Also, I'm not the biggest Dr Who fan in the house, and, I could be wrong, but I'm sensing this type of story telling might be too much for a core segment of the audience. Won't somebody think about the children, or something.

    Time will tell.

I like the sound of it, personally, but I take your point. I also worry that people have been trained to watch the show in more casual fashion, and that leaning hard into serialization could confuse (and lose) a chunk of the audience.

As much as I loathe Torchwood, that sounds about standard for them. Plus, I don't really count Torchwood when talking about the worst things in the Doctor Who franchise. The "mature" (as in what a horny 14 year old thinks is mature storytelling) spinoff for Doctor Who has, to me, always been terrible but also basically has nothing to do with the show outside of Captain Jack. The current Doctor Who rumor is easily the worst potential thing to happen to the main show. I'm not even going to try to compare it to the pile of garbage that is Torchwood. Its like saying that the Star Wars Holiday Special isn't so bad because Attack of the Clones exists. They're both terrible, but in very different ways.

Oh, I'll watch. Its 10 episodes and the show only airs once ever quarter century at this point (or thats what it feels like). I didn't drop Series 8 even when it had the single worst moment (not worst episode overall, but worst moment) in the franchise, so I think I can hate watch anything Doctor Who throws at me.

This idea is irredeemable. There is no possibility, in my opinion, of even a slightly tolerable episode coming from this idea. If the rumor is true it will be the closest someone has come to killing the franchise since Michael Grade succeeded in killing it. That's enough reason to hate watch it all by itself. But, honestly I'm still hoping this is all a fakeout and Chibnail isn't a hack (and that's the only type of person who would do that idea, a total hack). Until we get confirmation or the show airs its still possible we get real, and good, Doctor Who. I'll be hoping for the best until we get confirmation either way, but if the rumors are true then that's it, it will be one long hate watch.

If the rumors are true, best case scenario is the season bombs, they fire Chibnail and try desperately to keep the show afloat. Worst case is that the BBS does what it seems to really want to do and just cancels the show, which would suck but would be better then letting someone who would do what the rumor says keep running the show. So, hopefully the rumors aren't true.

Ratings count eyeballs, not the love or rage behind them. Hate watching doesn’t make the show less profitable or successful.

I look forward to you posting your opinions every week in the review thread, gonna be a tad embarrassing if you find you actually enjoy, or even just tolerate some of the episodes after this, but I guess if you do you'll just be conspicuous by your absence this time next year.

Of course who knows, this time next year I might be posting "Damn Kirk55555 was right all along this is terrible!" ;)

Y'know, something just occurred to me: Given the reports of different personalities (implying the regeneration itself has something to do with what happens in the rumor), does the splitting occur after or before Thirteen settles on her new look? If before, will we be seeing her in three totally different outfits? (The 'Mork' look revealed so far looks like it might fit 2068 best.)

Oh, I don't just go away (even though many people would like that). I'm generally about 90% correct when it comes to predicting what I'll think about something, and I seriously doubt this will be one of the few exceptions. The current Dr. Who rumor is about as stupid as making the first female Doctor, I don't know, a stripper. So beyond stupid that if it was anyone but Chibnail I wouldn't even remotely accept it as being possible. But, for the guy who wrote Cyberwoman, anything is possibly (including stripper Doctor based on how Cyberwoman turned out). I keep some hope that he's not this stupid because I have liked some of his work, but he's done enough crap that the rumor could be totally valid.

I suppose you're right. If you're watching something on BBC America, it would definitely be helping their ratings in theory (although since most people aren't hooked up to give ratings info I don't think a random individual's view really matters? Assuming that's even how you're consuming the product, of course :vulcan:).

Oh goody. It's "Dimensions in Time" all over again, but instead of ten minutes it's ten hours now.

Yeah, unless it's from the BBC directly I'd guess is that the best thing to do is not believe any of it.

Noting that for Daleks to continue to be used in the show, they must make an appearance every year. It's amazing how long they've kept up watchable stories, though years ago when they had the likes of "Doomsday" I thought the show would be done for. The Dalek used in "The Pilot" was rather nicely handled...

Practically everything on TV is serialized these days, so that's not really an argument. If anything, a proper serialized storyline that unfolds for the entire season is probably a better approach than Moffat's mostly standalones with the premiere, middle and finale episodes being important "game changing" moments thing. Or whatever the hell you call the Hybrid nonsense.

If this rumor ends up being true it will actually make the Hybrid seem like a good idea. Nothing fixes a tarnished legacy by having the person after you be a complete failure. "Well the hybrid was stupid, but at least there weren't three time locked versions of The Doctor having shit adventures".

Nah, if this rumor turns out to be true, this won't be nearly as bad as the Hybrid.

See? You're not the only person who can make sweeping generalizations based on very little. ;)

Its not a sweeping generalization. Its my opinion based off the rumor. That rumor, if true, is instantly worse then anything Moffat did. I say that as someone who considers the entire Danny Pink saga as some of the worst stuff ever produced on a generally good show. Hell, between Danny Pink and that horrendous Zygon two parter in Series 9 Moffat turned out some of the worst stuff in Doctor Who near the end of his run. But, it all will be bumped to "its bad, but not as bad as..." status if that rumor ends up being true. At least the Hybrid was just stupid, it didn't ruin its entire season (I actually like Series 9 generally). This rumor, if true, ruins a whole season and probably an entire incarnation of The Doctor, and the first female Doctor at that.
