The complete environment is a simulation and disappeared when the program was deactivated.

It's exactly a holodeck.

Likeable people are not one note. They're people.

Stories have likeable and unlikable people in them.

That is true that they're people but it goes only so far. As far as character arcs go, you need ups and downs and some shades of grey. I've never come across a completely likeable character who was considered dramatically attractive. But I can't believe I'm arguing with YOU about this :)

This is a reasonable argument to 'explain away' the contradiction, but it just seems to me like holodecks shouldn't have been in this show.
Why? Because TNG didn't get the continuity right?

Isn't 'logic extremist' an oxymoron? It's like saying 'Unitarian Jihad' or 'Libertarian police state'.
Is extreme the opposite of logic?

Didn't know that, but in Encounter at Farpoint they sure seemed like they are experiencing this for the first time.
Perhaps its that version of the technology they are experiencing for the first time? Like seeing a 3-D film for the first time? Can you imagine what someone from 1917 would think after seeing a film in full color with sound, CGI and 3-D on an IMAX screen for the first time? Sure they've seen movies but not like that.

I'd actually argue that the philosophy of total devotion to logic is itself extreme.

My personal favourite scene for the shithouse award is the one where Michael does those slow motion somersaults, though her martial arts fight with 'Daddy' - not good.

Seriously, how long does it take to kill 150 kilingons?

10 minutes?

####.

No wonder the Federation is doing so badly if they are underestimating Klingon strategy this racistly.

Although, maybe these target holodummies were modelled after four year old child soldiers, because that's how Klingons roll?

Eh, it wasn't real training just Call of Duty: Federation Edition.

I would like at least one likeable character .. please one. Someone to care about - sigh. :weep:
Michael is really growing on me. In the first two parts, I think her characterization was off. Since then, she's become much relatable. Tilly, Stamets, and Saru are all eminently likeable. I'd add Tyler to that category too . . . but given the theory about him I'm not too sure!

It's not a contradiction that needs to be explained away. Nowhere in Encounter at Farpoint did they say that holodecks were brand new. Riker simply says that he is surprised at how real the simulation is.

This whole "No holodecks before TNG" thing is the same as "Spock was the only Vulcan in Starfleet".

Gets better and better... People who hate the series.. this is the Star Trek for our generation. And the characters are really compelling in my opinion. Spock is mentioned and he'll possibly appear (I hope)
