When that one Vulcan asked Sarek to choose between his children he should have done what Spock did in the 09 movie. He should have replied with a polite "screw you" and go to the press or the future equivalent with it. He should have pointed out that the want to limit non Vulcans (not that Spock is completely so) in the Vulcan fleet to one instead of two people is against their IDIC philosophy and that it is also illogical to not accept the best students because of racism.
Sarek is also a snob and wants to be on the right side of his peers, especially with the status he has in Vulcan society. He already has a son that he had to banish and that was a full Vulcan son. Perhaps in his peers social standing Sarek has 'bad genes' and as a descendant of Surak is letting his ancestor down. The only rebellious thing Sarek has done is marry a human, have a child with said human and raise Michael. However to be an effective politician he still needs his Vulcan peers respect. There are probably other like minded Vulcans like Sarek who either keep a low profile, live offworld or do not have his high social standing.
T'Pau is probably the only person letting the others not sack him outright for his Terran/Federation loving ways.
Expecting all Vulcans to follow the principle of IDIC is like expecting all Christians to live by the rules of love your neighbour and being shocked when they do not.
Another real world example: lynchings took place after church on Sundays....

The commbadges on the 24th century shows also could be popped on and off similarly.

Yeah, but those, at times, were obviously held on by velcro. This seemed more seamless. The badge also appears to have a bit more heft to it than the comm badges.

And as we could clearly see from ENT, not all Vulcans lived by the principle of IDIC nor did they particularly seem to care about the more peaceful teachings of Surak. Some were willing to make enemies of Earth just to wage war on the Andorians and worked in collaboration with Romulan agents to foment unrest on their own homeworld.

Despite all the issues I had with this episode, the depiction of the Vulcans was not one of them. This episode fit very well with the ENT-era depictions of Vulcan culture, and it didn't directly contradict anything from the series which came later chronologically. Logic is not some thing which leads you invariably to the proper (nonviolent and nice) conclusion. It all depends upon the moral priors you start with. If you have very different moral priors to those of the Federation, you will reach different conclusions.

The biggest issue I had with the depiction of Vulcan was that the bigoted attitude of the Vulcan Science Academy openly conflicts with the Charter of the Federation, which establishes equal rights for all. It's possible it was amended as time goes on however. Or perhaps the Vulcan Science Academy is a quasi-private organization, and Federation law thus does not apply.
Exhibit A The Constitution of the United States of America, 'all men are created equal', a phrase written by white planters, slaveowners and upperclass lawyers. It took almost 200 years to fix that.

They would argue it was a logical decision - logically a human (or part human) could not fit in with a Vulcan institution.

I actually thought it made sense - we've seen Vulcans are pretty insular, and like to crew their own ships, such as the Intrepid and the T'kumbra, and possibly the otherwise mentioned ShirKhar and T'Plana-Hath.

Some Vulcans do serve on multispecies ships, but Spock is very much the exception in TOS, and there are suggestions in the films that it's still uncommon. We don't see many on the Enterprise-D or Deep Space Nine. Voyager has two or three.

While I don't know how they're going to treat Vulcan I am going to say two things.

1. The Vulcan Hello would have been under the Vulcan High Command.

2. Even the racist who didn't want Michael on his ship had nothing but respect for Sarek, which tells me that the suicide bomber was the far far right.

Dear Trekkies,

Got a question, when they go to rescue Sarik how did they use the spore drive? did the mechanic let himself impale again ???? or did they found another solution.

Yes, Stamets has started to activate the spore drive using himself as the navigator. He made a brief comment about getting over the needles thing. His personality also seems to have changed a bit, imo, from his connection to the spore network.

He uses the force just like Sarek and Burnham. STD make up the rules as they go along especially with their plagiarised spore drive..l

I got to watch it, skip and pixel-free, last night. I am still on an "8" ranking with the episodes so far. This one was pretty solid, had some nice moments and good storytelling.

One thing I wish they'd get rid of is the horrible "dream sequence" of when Sarek and Burnham connect. It reminds me too much of "The Alternative Factor", and some of the effects associated with it are cheesy. I would prefer it if they did something like close in on Burnham's eye, then pull back out to reveal her on Vulcan, in Sarek's mind. The starfield thing does nothing for me.

The show is starting to settle in, and I'm liking it a bit more, but there are some things that need work. Hopefully it will gather some more momentum!

5/10 and I'm being generous... it seemed to have the ingredients of a good episode, they even showed Vulcan, but it's still all about looks and fanwanking "ooh, they mentioned Spock, oohs it's Amanda" and not an exciting plot... meh. It actually reminds me of a really expensive fan production, it's about referencing StarTrek and not being StarTrek.

It definitely did get better than the first four episodes. But it's plateaued and not trending up.

But we did. How about you get off your soap-box now.

My contribution is that all the technology on this show and the kelvinverse movies would be highly prized on a Prometheus class starship in 2375 never mind on a ship from the 2250s. I can’t buy into it. There will be a new explanation on how it works next week then another explanation the week after that...

Exactly so.

Discovery's major story-point conceits are about as bereft of science as any episode of the 1978 BSG.

Bending over backward to be fair, all this was true of Trek TOS. Fans just didn't have much previous continuity to complain about, and the writers kept their nonsense a little simpler and briefer so it was less of an ongoing nuisance.
