Anyway, onto new issues. Can anyone please tell me what Ash Tyler's characterization is? The other characters began as basically one-note archetypes which have since deepened, but despite being in two episodes now, I can't for the life of me come up with one notable personality trait he has. Maybe this is intentional because he's actually Voq in disguise, but it seems highly unusual nonetheless, and makes him, if you take away the mystery of who he really is, the most boring character by far.

Uhm....you do remember what Picard was like at 20, right?

Tillys effervescent personality does not promote a strong level of confidence or belief in one's ability to be a captain but she's actively seeking advice on how to improve herself, adjust to her circumstances, and train harder. That's better than being a womanizing dirtball who gets himself stabbed.
To be fair, the same arrogant, shitty attitude that got him stabbed in the photo above is also what propelled Picard's career forward. Recall that when this incident was avoided, Picard instead became Starfleet's only 60 year old lieutenant.

I completely thought Stamets deserved the dressing down he got in the fourth episode. My point is only the "mother hen" attitude he took toward the crew in this episode (and is total trust for Ash Tyler) seemed to come totally out of nowhere.

For all the supposed serialization of the show, in a lot of ways it felt like the reset button was at least partially pressed between the last episode and this one.
Stamets is 'tripping' (Google that along with 'Groovy' ;)) everytime he connects to his 'Spore Network'. Remember that proving the existence of this Network and it's potential was his dream; and a dream he's been working on for 12 years, Not only (in his mind) was he proven right; he's the one interacting directly with it <---- So yeah, I can see where he's elated and acting like a drug addict at this point.

Out of all of the weird characterization in the episode, Stamets is the one I am most willing to overlook for that reason. There is no excuse for Burnham and Lorca acting so differently from the last few episodes however.

He's on shrooms, so tripping is totally consistent with taking psychedelics. An apt analogy in that regard.

Hmmm... Based on the comments here, sounds like I made the right choice. I'm still glad I stopped watching after episode 2. I look forward to reading some TNG novels and watching old DS9 episodes. I do miss having new Star Trek to watch though.
Yeah, that's how I felt back in 1987.

I first thought the attack we saw in the past was from the attack on Burnham when her parents died. Seems like that wasn't the case and she already lived with Sarek then. So since when did Sarek and Amanda raise her? I think this wasn't really revealed yet. Maybe she was much smaller than I thought when she started living with them.

So, Burnham and Tyler/Voq are going to romance each other? Well, THAT'S going to be interesting! He's a devout fanatic. She murdered his cult leader. He scalped and ate her motherly mentor figure. TOGETHER, they are unstoppable!
If Tyler doesn't know right now that he is really Voq because of some memory block or something and they hook up, I wonder who will be more disgusted when his real self is revealed? Burnham or Voq?

I really liked this episode. Burnham's backstory finally mattered and it is now clear why they chose Sarek specifically to be her mentor. This really is a good exploration of Sarek's character, and the bit about having to choose which child gets to be in the Expedition was really great. Sarek's resentment for Spock joining Starfleet is seen in completely new light, and it really makes much more sense this way.
Not really. Spock did nothing wrong so there is still no reason for Sarek to resent him. It is not Spock's fault that Sarek made the decision he made. He should blame himself alone. And either way he should have recommend Starfleet for both of his children in the first place. He knew how racist other Vulcans are. Especially Burnham should have it easier in Starfleet than in the Vulcan fleet. When that one Vulcan asked Sarek to choose between his children he should have done what Spock did in the 09 movie. He should have replied with a polite "screw you" and go to the press or the future equivalent with it. He should have pointed out that the want to limit non Vulcans (not that Spock is completely so) in the Vulcan fleet to one instead of two people is against their IDIC philosophy and that it is also illogical to not accept the best students because of racism.

I really like Admiral Cornwell in this episode. I hope she doesn’t perish, and I felt shocked that she’d now had to suffer under the Klingons.
I feel so not sorry for her.

She is an asshole and I thought it was poetic justice that Lorca didn't go after her with the Discovery to rescue her. After all when he did it for Sarek she was admonishing him for it. So I liked it that Lorca then used the same explanation she used before to not go after her. I mean that wasn't the real reason for him, but technically he is still following her previous expressed will. I wonder how she feels on the other end of the rope now. Is she happy that Lorca doesn't risk the Discovery for her? I kind of doubt it.

She also deserves everything the Klingons will do to her. I didn't forget how she was all for catching, enslaving and torturing countless innocent tardigrades. Her bad karma just caught up to her.

"Spaz" is a slur against the disabled in the UK, akin to "retard" or something. I had clocked the post myself, but noted @Push The Button was from the US and ignored it. I've had that misunderstanding before in TNZ.

It's shortened from Spastic Diplegia, making fun of people with motor neuron disorders and the mannerisms common to them. It spread from there to making fun of basically anyone with even a slight behavioural disorder too. It's a very ableist slur yeah.
