I think there is a possibility, but it would be extremely limited possibility, and likely not have the investment from the studios to do what I think it would take.

There's nothing I'd love more to see it happen, but I fear that the ship has sailed on this. I really thought beyond was going to do 500 million plus right up to a couple of weeks from release, despite that shitty first trailer. There just doesn't seem to be the appetite for sequels outside of Marvel and Pixar at the moment. Just look at War for the planet of the Apes. That film has taken a 200 million plus dip compared to Dawn, that's a huge drop, and I don't think it's down to the quality of product either.

If another one gets made I can see a budget of around 120 million, and returns similar to beyond, a much safer proposition for Paramount.

It doesn't even have to make much at the domestic box office, if it does well overseas and on DVD / blu-ray / streaming services.

edit: now that I think about it, I think the main reason Beyond didn't do so well at the box office is it was overshadowed by all the publicity Star Wars was getting. The domestic market isn't big enough to support two massive blockbuster franchises at once, and it certainly didn't help that Paramount had no idea how to market it. Star Trek 2009 had one of the best trailers I've ever seen. Beyond's trailer made it look like a low- budget knockoff.

not to diminish star trek 2009 (i love it), but its box office was boosted by a weak slate of films that summer, not just the absence of star wars as a competitor. the notable films from that summer other than trek were x-men origins: wolverine, angels & demons, transformers: revenge of the fallen, harry potter and the half blood prince, and up. i would say only the latter two films really have legacies.

since 2009, the marketplace has changed and has become saturated with mega franchises. summer 2016 was stuffed with franchises with name brand appeal and a lot of them failed to make a dent... ghostbusters, ninja turtles, bourne, alice in wonderland... star trek beyond was a casualty of poor marketing, natural decline in interest, and its release date.

but star trek and star wars should be able to co-exist, they did before. i mean, sure DC is looking like a wannabe marvel studios right now, but both franchises are doing well. paramount just needs to accept star trek isn't star wars and adjust budgets and release dates accordingly.

star trek 2009 is still in the top 10 of paramount's highest grossing films of all time (star trek 2009 is #10, into darkness is #15), i really hope they don't kneecap themselves over star trek beyond's disappointing returns.

The Kelvin films is they were cast specifically to come across as "young". That was the gimmick or novelty that allowed the films to not be seen as merely a retread. Of course, once you get to Into Darkness the retreading begins in earnest. But I just don't think the public wants to see the Kelvin timeline start replaying TOS' greatest hits. But if it's not going to do that, then what else can they come up with that is of...galactic proportions suitable for a feature film?

Not only that, most of the Kelvin cast are A or near A-list talent who are going to negotiate higher salaries. Pine was a big draw in Wonder Woman. Saldana is in both Guardians and the Avatar sequels. Simon Pegg is already 47. John Cho and Karl Urban are both 45. And then you have Anton Yelchin's death.

In addition to this, given how much work it took to lock a final script and director for Beyond, and Justin Lin probably not coming back, who is going to be steering the ship??

You start adding all these factors up as I'm sure the suits are going to be hard pressed to try to put something together again.

About domestic markets, there is one interesting article shared elsewhere about that:

    http://www.cracked.com/blog/6-ways-china-hollywood-are-teaming-up-to-ruin-movies/

The implication is that movies are becoming more expensive (given marketing, competition, and high ticket prices) and because of that studios must rely more on foreign markets not only for sales but even for funding.

This together with other points might explain significant changes in various franchises, including Star Trek.

Add to this changes in distribution for other media (such as subscription, which frees TV show development from time slots, what corporate sponsors want, etc.) and we may be looking at the same across the board.

My crazy idea, for a possible 4th Kelvinverse movie: James Kirk is propelled back in time, meets his dad (prior to his birth) and forwarns him of the future - sacrificing himself so his dad can live - and changing the timeline yet again.

George Kirk survives and by the end of the movie, Jim Kirk and the events post incursion have been changed again.

Setup is then for a George Kirk adventures, starring Hemsworth, and a new kelvinsverse timeline (not a return to the prime timeline, as is previously known). Chris Pine and current actors are written out, with new cast and characters.

    ;) (wink)

    [saddestmoon gets coat]

PS: not something I’d want to happen - despite my wanting Hemsworth to reprise his role - just wondering if we may get something of a reboot of the Kelvinverse perhaps...

even though having Hemsworth in it won't make any different whatsoever to the box office perhaps the impending mega success of Thor Ragnarok (and Avengers Infinity War) will make Paramount finally crack on and fast track the George Kirk ST4 (with them thinking having Thor in it will bring in the big bucks that Beyond shouldve made :))

I would have liked a movie that

    1) Has klingons in it. They were teased out enough already, give them something meaningfull to do! And
    2) Does NOT focus around a bad-guy with a vengeance and a super-weapon!

But then, this is clearly an action franchise. Then again, who knows? They could have done a reboot of the Doomsday machine. But this time with klingons instead of Decker and the Constellation. And maybe delved even more into the Doomsday machine itself, maybe take a look at the insides of it, maybe it's an advanced A.I. that is harder to defeat this time. I don't know.

I kind of like the idea of a mirror universe movie where Kirk finds him in the mirror universe only it's a different mirror universe that is similar but not the same as the one from the TOS show or Discovery.

In this universe Kirk's dad is alive and captain of the Enterprise, after we see him murder Pike in a pre-opening credits sequence. The movie though could be about equal rights and the "bad guys"are basically a metaphor for liberals or social justice warriors or whatever word one wants to use and the main leader is captain Uhura who commands another Federation starship. The main theme is basically about Captain Kirk becoming Woke! At least I think that is how that word is used. He is torn between people who he mostly agree's with but also his Dad who he never got to know and this is closest he ever will get to know him while he also learns to revaluate some of his own behavior.

As for the other characters you could have Spock be Uhura's first officer but he has a ulterior motive all of his own and maybe has something to do with Vulcans enslaving humans and he is sort of playing both sides by manipulating both sides which to me means he would be a metaphor for the 1% when it comes to social issues. Sulu would Kirk's dad's first officer. Scotty would be a space pirate. Bones would be a soldier on the Enterprise. Chekov would be dead because of the actor's death. KIrk of this universe would be the janitor on the "Enterprise" so when KIrk replaces him his efforts at trying to make a difference would be meet with some comic relief and also conflict because it means this Kirk didn't live up to the expecations of his dad and got the job just because his dad was captain.

At some point Kirk is able to end the civil war and his dad also learns a lesson. Spock ends up dying because he is the true villian of the movie. Kirk beams back to his universe a new and improved man.

I don't see the point of rebooting something if all you're going to do is rehash, poorly, what went before. I would like to see something focused on the Vulcan's , at present destroying them just seems to have been a plot device for Spock.

Not sure what films you are referring to, since the characters arcs were pretty well presented.

Before Discovery, I would have said Klingons. But I'm not a fan of what they've done to my favorite species so I'd rather they just leave them alone now.

I have enjoyed all the nuTrek movies solely based on the Enterprise characters/cast. But I really don't want to see another one-dimensional, must destroy the Federation, (inset evil laugh), mustache twirling villain.

My Trek 4 idea: a well respected starfleet captain suddenly goes on a rampage, attacking Federation outposts. The Enterprise is dispatched to stop the renegade ship because Kirk knows the captain personally. After a "wrath of Khan" style duel between the Enterprise and the other Starfleet ship, Kirk and co discover the renegade captain has been possessed by an alien. They successfully free the captain from the alien control and join forces to learn the true motives of the strange aliens.

Anything set after Kirk's timeline. I'm just so sick of that time period. I'll watch a three hour film about Picard searching for a planet that can grow him some hair, and settling on a tribble for a toupe. Just ANYTHING other than the TOS era.
