What would you want the plot of Star Trek 4 to be?

restore the timeline is impossible since there is no timeline to restore. This is a different reality, tos is still there and exists parallel to this.
And..are we still debating this point? Have mercy it's 8 years. It's another reality no one destroyed the tos one. It's another reality.

Time travel. Two Enterprises. Courageous moment McCoy overcomes fear of something plot related and dies saving everybody. Only to be restored in a last minute reset.

if this crew went back in time and altered something using 'time travel', they'd essentially create another reality, not really change theirs.

Only when there's red matter involved... and I've checked with ship's stores, we're fresh out apparently! :D

Something written by an author. Maybe one of the authors who writes Star Trek books.
They understand the material.
Their book plots make sense unlike the plots of a lot of the Star Trek movies.

Maybe Harlan Ellison could write a story.

Anything to stop that timeline, then proceed with one or two more movies after Nemesis.

The Enterprise has been sent on a joint exploration mission with the USS Excelsior. Spock is the Captain of the Excelsior and Sulu his First Officer. Uhura has been made First Officer of the Enterprise. I'd throw in some ancient ruins and a mystery around these ruins and also include the tholians in some way.

That's interesting as a few of classic TOS episodes were written by sci fi authors of the day. Hopefully whatever Trek we get next, and we will as it's a quality property for paramount, will be a well wriiten script

Great plot, make you think n guess, action of course, with a message

Sadly, most novelists make for lousy screenwriters. The two are very very different forms.

So the novelist would need to work with a professional screenwriter or three.

Pike is resurrected, nuKirk is fired, Spock is promoted, Bones gets laid for a change and Uhura becomes President of the Federation.

Title explains it all. I'm tired of the "bad guy wants revenge" plots. I was thinking something like the Doomsday machine, combined with the Guardian of Forever as a plot device to bring George Kirk back, as he's rumored to return. Dad Kirk and Son Kirk team up to stop the Doomsday Machine. Could be cool.

I'm usually not intrigued by such direct recycling, since "Into Darkness" would have been better off without the ersatz-Khan and magic blood subplots (the double double-cross/terrorism themes felt far better written), and yet the Guardian of Forever to bring back George with the plot you suggested could be quite good - it's in a new timeline and does something new with amalgamated plots (since 1979 TMP was a mix of two or three TOS episodes and still did something novel and new with them all).

But, as was said above, doing it in a way where Enterprise doesn't get sliced up so badly for am-dram effect after 2 movies in a row where it gets heavily damaged or destroyed, let another ship get destroyed, Kirk takes notice, and uses novel means to destroy a big bad. And, yeah, "Doomsday Machine" is just one big mystery machine that has no human involvement and can have big compelling action scenes that are rightly obligatory for big screen treks... :) Just as long as they keep Scooby Doo out of it, LOL! :D

Given that the Enterprise does things which never happened to the prime ship in TOS, and that they had an earlier start under Kirk, ripple effect of the Kelvin destruction, etc...it's possible that just as nuKirk and co. encountered individuals/situations that other ships would have in the prime reality, other ships in the alternate reality might run into things Prime Kirk did instead.

ST09 : Save Planet Earth from unknown monstor ship capable of destroying all life.
STID : Kahn
STB : Enterprise is lost
ST 4 : Time travel to bring back extinct species to save earth from alien probe.

I don't know. But like many I'm tired of revenge plots. I'm tired of the E getting its butt handed to it. I'm tired of always saving Earth. No Time Travel. And I have no interest in any part of the original plot for ST3 that was shelved. Maybe a plot of the crew surviving some kind of disaster. Chekhov could go out in the opening. It's sad the actor died. But it gives us a chance to have a main character really die. And have no reset buttons. Maybe they're engaging the Klingons, Romulans, Gorn, or Orions when near by star goes Nova crippling both ships. And they must work together to survive. So that rules out Klingons. They would rather die in battle. Not to mention how much Klingons are used in STD. I would say Gorn. New Universe, new outcomes.
