I...don't think it's actually the telescope that was set up in her ready room/office. It looks rusted, at what point exactly could it have gotten rusted? Exposure to vacuum doesn't even do that. This is going to sound crazy but it's very common in collectors or people passionate about something to have doubles of the exact same object. One for purely display, keepsake purposes and the other for use. My fiance for example does this, she has a set of Harry Potter books she reads and a set she will never touch but keeps on the shelf for esthetic purposes amongst other things. It's very possible the one she has set up she has set up because she likes the novelty of using one, or heck she's a telescope afficionado. It's no different than Picard and his relics and Sisko and his African art collection. She has the family one in storage somewhere (probably earth or whichever place she calls home off the ship) and she has a replica with her.
Probably not the sort of thing you can moan about.

Starfleet didn't get the telescope. They somehow got the box containing the will and telescope. Georgiou put the telescope in the box. It may not even be the telescope from Shenzou. She said it belonged to her family for a long time.
That's possible. Her family may have had a centuries-old passion for astronomy and the telescope inside the container may have been THE Georgiou family telescope from wherever their home is located. That container had been filled by Captain Georgiou years before her death as evidenced by her longer hair in the hologram. That's the hairstyle she wore around the time Michael joined her crew.
Look, I tend to suspect that someone getting their feathers all ruffled on a Star Trek forum is less likely to be a psychologist than to need one.
that's exactly what i would do if i were the collecting type AND in telescopes. it would be just wrong to restore something really old to an out of the box condition.
... and i don't believe for a second that if it were the one from the ship anybody went thtough the fuzz to put it in that box and slap that kind of a lock on it. some starfleet-dude just hands it over 'according to capt georgiou's last will you should have that - sign here'

Are we supposed to believe that Starfleet somehow obtained this telescope via nutrek transwarp transporter???? That's not canon *snort laughs*
I completely agree. I am being managed by a psychologist for depression and anxiety. I don't see anything insulting about consulting a healthcare professional for their services. They are experts in mental health. Including PTSD. I am not, hence why I was asking if pathologising Burnham's actions is either appropriate or necessary.

Honestly hadn't even thought of that, but yeah it makes more likely that was a replica. A centuries old rusted telescope has got to be super delicate. Grab one bit of significsnt space turbulence over the course of seven years and bam it's dust.
Centuries old, and it could still be made half out of plastic.
Also restoring something like that to working condition, might mean replacing %100 of the parts, so there's a question of if it's even a working telescope, then it's most certainly not the telescope from the pilot.

I've just started on medication myself for depression and anxiety, the last few weeks have been a wild ride. It just bothers me to see a character who may or may not have a mental health issue automatically labelled a psychopath or unstable, does that make sense? I often see the questioning of someones mental state used as an insult and thought you were doing the same. I'm sorry i took those comments and your initial comments personally. I hope you're doing okay with your mental health and taking care of yourself.
So that plot hole is put to rest. Of course people will still harp on it. The irony of people always saying "show don't tell!!" And then they do just that (heavily rusted telescope, exact same hair as a seven year old flashback, some simple common sense) which leads to people missing it and screaming "dumb writers! Plot holes!"
Michael went through traumatic stress during The Battle of the Binary Stars, but there's no noticeable correlation between that day and PTSD, besides, they wouldn't let her serve in any capacity (in Starfleet) if she was ill.
However, I'm thinking that the reason she's so close lipped on Discovery, is not from a psychological reaction to extreme trauma, but it's from adjusting to prison for 6 months: Do you really think that that was the first time Michael tried to kill someone with a lunch tray, in self defense?

I felt that there was some evidence in Burnham's dialogue particularly with Georgiou that indicated that the reason for her actions was that she was afraid of losing Georgiou and the rest of the crew. I took Burnham's response to indicate that the fear of losing another family to the klingons was brought on by PTSD from losing her biological family.
I'd question whether Burnham actually went through any starfleet training, it seemed like Sarek pulled some strings to get her a posting on Shenzhou straight out of the vulcan science academy. Burnham seemed very vulcan when she first came onboard so I'm wondering if Sarek thought that she had everything under control?
I imagine that, Burnham has had people trying to beat her up to make a name for themselves for the last 6 months, so it would make sense that she's trying to keep a low profile.
Or antimatter pods, or whatnot.
A bit odd a choice for a weapon, really. I mean, I get the Lone Ranger thing where Lorca doesn't want to reveal the existence and capabilities of his ship, but leaving behind big bombs is dubious because the one thing the mining base didn't want was big bombs. Klingons were already delivering plenty enough of those - wouldn't Lorca's ordnance just have killed the last surviving miners, now that the shields were down?

Michaels personality is very elastic and adaptive, if you wonder how quickly she became Vulcan after moving in with sarek, and how quickly she became human again after joining the Shenzou?
That can also be evidence of weakness, since she may have no concept of "self" and instead borrows from her surroundings.
It's interesting you say that. Shortly after watching the Battle of the Binary Stars, I read an article about Pete Davidson from SNL and his mental health issues that were brought on by his father being killed in 9/11. Davidson was recently diagnosed with Borderline personality disorder, one of the symptoms of which is a struggle with the concept of Self. Peter Davidson situation had similarities with Burnhams so i'm wondering if the angle that they are going for is not necessarily any particular disorder but that by living on vulcan she didn't really get the help that she needed and is now suffering for it. What you are saying makes sense though, you could also say that she the burnham we are currently seeing is one who has borrowed from her prisons surroundings. At the same time she seems to be confident enough to not go along with Landry's assessment of the tardigrade. So I dunno. Burnham is a pretzel, wrapped in a mystery, wrapped in an enigma.
