After Trek

CBS needs to understand that Trek fans would love a low key discussion of the previous episode involving fans who may or may not be celebs (as long as they are fans), a la "Talking Dead".
It sounds like Yvette Nicole Brown (and her copious notebooks) need to make their way over from The Talking Dead to bring that level of analysis to this aftershow. I know I'd welcome it. :)

Finally found time to watch the second episode of After Trek and I'm still enjoying it. Aaron Harberts seems like a very nice guy, I'm glad they got him again for episode two. Some things I noticed (and I apologize if they have already been mentioned):

Lorca knew Burnham? At one point Harberts confirms that Lorca didn't just bring Burnham on board because of the mutiny thing, but because he knew her even before that. Interesting.

Burnham didn't care if she died on that shuttle. That's something I didn't at all take away from the way they presented it in the episode. Sure, they stress how she's down on her luck, but she didn't come across as suicidal. But that's an interesting angle, which makes me wish they made that clearer.

The shuttlebay set is completely CGI. Is that true? I certainly didn't notice. I thought they built that long back wall at the very least.

Landry loves Lorca. That's something I have seen people theorize about and Harberts seems to confirm it here. I wonder if he reciprocates that love.

I'm a big fan of his TNG podcast and was super excited that he was picked to be the host! Too bad to hear that he's less than well-recieved (I haven't had a chance to catch the show, but these comments are making me question whether I want to). Matt Mira is a super fan and also a super nerd with a very... loud personality, so I guess I can understand how this isn't translating well to being a talk show host. He is a very excitable person, so perhaps this wasn't the best medium for him :(

But he's great as a podcaster! I swear!
I love Matt Mira on Talk Salad and Scrambled Eggs. I wish he and Kevin Smith had more time to do more.

I thought it was more that he knew things about her already, rather than knowing her personally.

Really? I thought it was self-evident. When it looked like the shuttle was about to be destroyed, she wasn't alarmed or trying to think of a way out; she was just totally passive and accepting, waiting for it to happen.

I don't know, I just read that as hesitation, because she doesn't feel involved anymore. She thinks her interfering might make it worse. But at the same time I half expected her to jump up and save the situation at any moment. She looked like she did think about doing something. And my feeling was that she would have done something if they weren't rescued a moment later. I just didn't see her as suicidal.

Burnham might've thought about doing something, but she is so full of despair that the thought likely passed quickly.

I don't know if you've ever experienced that sort of despair, but as someone who has (or has at least come close), things can become so bleak that even the most basic drive to survive can seem pointless. Why bother trying to save your own neck when death seems preferable? Beside, with Burnham, there's undoubtedly a good dose of survivor's guilt to help feed that despair.

All good points, @Christopher and @CRM-114. I guess I was just seeing her too much as the typical hero of the story who would never give up. But you are right, not caring whether one survives or not would be a natural reaction for anyone who lived through what she experienced. It's more real. Will certainly watch that scene differently on my next rewatch. :)

When the emergency started I certainly expected that this was a setup for her to save the day. I think I would have liked that better; saving those rude convicts rather than ending up fighting with them in the messhall.

(Also, your avatar scares me. Are you all right?)

After Trek was good this week. I particularly liked Jason Isaacs interviews with Star Trek fans at NYCC (i think). I wonder how many vented their rage at him regarding Discovery?

The show has gotten a little less intolerable but I still have a hard time considering it a "good" show. it's just the "only" one in town considering CBS, smartly locking it up as tight as they did.

The host mentioned that Captain Lorca, unlike previous Captains, doesn't like to sit on the Captain's chair. Isaacs replied that his character has space hemorrhoids. :)

It's interesting that he has a standing table and no chairs in his ready room, Maybe he has a back problem or does in fact have space haemorrhoids. Maybe someone should get him a space butt pillow donut thing. It could be based off of the discovery's saucer section. It would rotate and everything.

Thought they would have bigged up Ep 5 a bit more ? Considering one of the producers said it was a pivotal ep in another interview I read?....Still no real interaction between those 'fans' in audience and guests which is something TD does very well! Need more serious content... Not really getting Matt Mira either...

I think the show is trying to do a few things all at the same time, and cram it into 45 or so minutes. For me, I'd scrap the going to Twitter so much and some of the other little side tracks and get more into behind the scenes things, like what they did this week with the costume designs. I love those kinds of things, and this show could do more of, IMO.

This week was very good, both Mary Chieffo and Kenneth Williams were great. The tidbits about the House of Mokai, developing the Klingon accent in English, the make up, the 'Klingon nutritionist' who keeps the cast hydrated for 17 hours, Kol's boots (which are House of Kor-specific, but all Klingon boots have one big toe separate from the others), the relationship between L'Rell and Tyler being sexual indeed, etc., were really interesting. Also further discussion of Admiral Cornwall & that the tardigrade was originally designed as Stamet's superior officer!
