After Trek

The host problem is nothing a Valium won't cure. :p
I'm gonna give it another shot in hopes that those manic moments get smoothed out, although I generally don't like "after" shows except for those sneak peaks.

I felt that this was a huge swing and miss by CBS. First, the host is an idiot, nuff said. Second, CBS could have really saved some "new viewers" to Star Trek by having the guest explain where this show is in the timeline and how it applies to the other trek shows ( Enterprise and TOS), They could have talked about technology acquired since Enterprise and at least give some insight as to what is going on. I had several friends that only watch trek from time to time, tell me they were completely lost. CBS needs to take this into consideration for this shows survival. They need new viewers to the trek universe.

I gotta say the overt positivity and lack of real conversation / critique is hard to watch and pretty boring. Couldn't get into the guys. It's good to have solid interviews but it seems way less like a show and much more like a setup. I'd rather discuss it with fans like Billj said on page 1

Clearly Frain was given a scripted answer to the whole 'what do you want to bring to the role' question after the break too!

Seemed scripted to me too, if not at least "well prepared" Last interview we got scheduled with an actor we had to pre-screen the questions, not cause the actor was a prima donna or something but they had to make sure their answers wouldn't violate plots. It's a running show where episodes haven't aired yet ya know. Im sure they'll be "prepared" though. I just always hope it don't sound scripted ya know. You want everyone, especially the actor, to feel comfortable to be themselves.

For what it's worth, the behind the scenes pieces are up on the official Trek youtube channel. So you don't have to suffer through the rest to see them.
Has the scene they previewed from episode three been release anywhere else yet?

No, I don't mean the season one trailer. They showed a whole scene from episode three. Michael coming down to engineering (I guess) and meeting a couple of crewmen, including Tilly and Stamets. I haven't seen that pop up anywhere else.

Ah. Apologies.

I'm not sure how this is going to work if the audience doesn't feel connected to these characters. That is what worked with TOS all the way to VOY (I never got into ENT) I am going to play a wait and see situation to see if I see a connection

That will be important. But it is too early to tell in the first 2 episodes where so many were killed. We haven't even seen the main ship and its crew. I can say I never felt connected to any characters after watching the first two episodes of any Star Trek shows. It always takes time for the audience, as well as for the actors to gel and find their voice.

It seemed fun for the exclusive content (the behind-the-scenes featurettes, etc). But the host kills any of the potential value with the in-studio guests.

I'll watch for the exclusive content and sneak-peek stuff. That's it.

I'm amazed anybody here was able to get through that first episode. The host was so awful it actually made me appreciate the job Chris Hardwick does on Talking Dead, as he can at least keep things organized and ask some interesting questions now and then.

I'm a big fan of his TNG podcast and was super excited that he was picked to be the host! Too bad to hear that he's less than well-recieved (I haven't had a chance to catch the show, but these comments are making me question whether I want to). Matt Mira is a super fan and also a super nerd with a very... loud personality, so I guess I can understand how this isn't translating well to being a talk show host. He is a very excitable person, so perhaps this wasn't the best medium for him :(

But he's great as a podcaster! I swear!

I found the host annoying at first but now I am OK with it. It is a difficult job. If he was the usual Trek nerd it would have made the show very dry and boring. He does have good nerd level Trek knowledge. But he also does a good job of interviewing the guests and his high energy style keeps the show entertaining.
