One thing wrong with this where was the klingon ship, did they just drop men off and leave them .Another thing an experimental warp system it fails a's we never hear about itagain in future trek . This is not star trek based on gene''s trek but using words and terms from it, you noticed from pilot when the captain said we are starfleet we don't fire and first officer wanted to shoot ,now she is under a captain that thinks that way

Great Episode!! Lorcas last scene reminds me of an nazi - scientist. Mysterious.

My first thought when I saw the black insignia was MACO...He was even armed and suited up like one from Enterprise. Would just push further that the Discovery isn't actually a science vessel, but a military one using science as a means of fighting wars.

I agree. I think of Discovery like today's DARPA or "Area 51". Science is a part of what they do but it is geared towards super top secret military applications.

Science vessels are designed to science, and warships are designed to war.

Sure you can jigger one into the other, but all the power points and closets end up being exactly where you don't need them, when you're trying to science or war.

It stands to reason that Starfleet in that era has its own ground troops and commandos for strike missions into enemy territory. Colonel West in Star Trek VI was the commanding officer of surface forces who were being trained for a possible rescue mission deep inside Klingon space to retrieve Kirk and McCoy. West's troops may be the late 23rd century descendant of United Earth's MACOs.

Theory as to why we hadn’t heard of Burnam before from Spock or Serena:

:
She’s dead. Or disgraced. You don’t talk about family members who are passed. Or disgraced.

Or his mother, whom he didn't even hate, despise, fear or otherwise avoid.

Vulcans just aren't great speakers. Or even great listeners.

One of the prisoners was bragging about killing 3 Andorians. People in the Discoveryverse seem to particularly hate Andorians for some reason.
must be the producers talking through the characters.

people asked them to introduce Andorians all the time

She had a giant pimple on her forehead.24th century should have solved this.

'I am HAVE SPECIAL NEEDS crewmember' as soon as walks in the door!!!

new way to fly.correct term is new way to travel.using spores to travel instantly?..stupid sword/sorcery fantasy=bad writing.ignorant writers.

This was just bad writing. The writers should be fired.Everyone was awful and badly behaved. It was more like Jarhead type..

Nope.

Is it just me, or does Lt. Stamets remind me of McKay from STARGATE ATLANTIS?

And the new drive... feels like a slightly different version of the slipstream from ANDROMEDA.

Much, much better that the "pilot". 8/10. If it would take place in 24-25 century, everything could work great. Even the "new" Klingons.

Let's see. We've had both John Lennon and Conan O'Brien mentioned in the Star Trek franchise in recent years.

I can't wait for the inevitable Elvis reference when Captain Lorca gets caught dancing in his ready room.
