This episode will always be special to me... my wife and I watched it while she was in early labor... and as of 17.37 hours today, I became a dad for the third time, of a beautiful baby boy Jorne! Whenever I will rewatch this episode in the future, it will always be connected to my son. And I'm glad it was a really, really great episode!
Congratulations! :D

Cadet Tilly, your placement is on a ship run by a secretive branch of Starfleet you don't know exists.

Actually that is a point.

What if the main reason that she is on board is to perfect her weak and fragile legend?

Superwoman hiding in plain light as Lana Lang.

The stuff she says, it's like Tilly is manipulating those around her into pitying and underestimating her, for being a sentimentally weak halfwit.

I suspect the Section 31 elements are a red herring. We're being shown things in the way we have so we make the same mistakes as Michael Birnham did. At least that's my hope.

And was that a Cardassian vole on Captain Lorca's table in his study at the end?

I don't mind Tilly, I think it's nice to see things through a cadet's eyes. I don't care for Commander Landry, I think she is shady. I'm not sure about Lt. Stamets either. I am staying tuned, I do like Michael Burnham and Saru a lot.

Conflicted... better than the pilot but to me this is not Star Trek, just an average sci-fi show (so far).
In all honesty without the "Star Trek" in the title I wouldn't bother for a 4th episode.

Apart from being Start Trek-less, my biggest issue is the cliche writing and the uninteresting characters.
Michael is still unlikable, her Mary-Sue-ness is frustrating and It is tough to watch when you so much dislike the main lead.
Tilly is even more annoying than Neelix (I was so disappointed when I realized she wasn't a red-shirt case ), plus there is something distracting in her face/look/expressions..
Lorca hasn't charmed me yet, I guess he picked up Michael so they can pat eachother on the back about how much amazing both are.
Saru was much more likable in this one (to my surprise - I take back the JarJar Binks comment I made about him and give it to Tilly).

Most of all, I liked the Chief-Engineer.

Not to mention Trek already did the "Section 31 Starship" thing four years ago with Into Darkness, so I can't see the writers wanting to retell that story again so soon.

I too hope that this is the case.

Maybe section 31 will be more ambiguous, like a set of directives during wartime, as opposed to a black hat organization with guys like Sloane and the Alien Nation guy from ENT.

Watching now. WTF? 'Breath scan'? Michael and the audience figured out in about three seconds how to break that, how has nobody else on the show?
