I don't think we're supposed to like his non-answer.

I think the writers are putting us at odds with him on purpose.

 

I'll welcome a captain new type of captain that obviously doesn't always play by the kushy Star Fleet rules. The closest captain we had to that was Sisko, but Sisko always felt guilty when he bent the rules, Lorca obviously won't feel any resentment.

 

I think he's the perfect Starfleet Captain if Starfleet's goal is to do secret research near the battlefront of a space war.

 

Loving Captain Lorca. Yes, he's much darker than other Captains we've followed before. But we've seen his type more often than not. This type of Captain does exist in all previous Star Trek's, we just never saw it from their point of view. Off the top of my head, there's the Captain of the Pegasus, the Captain in Equinox in Voyager who killed a bunch of aliens to use them for Warp Power. And numerous Admirals, probably 90% of them were like this.

 

My two cents (well, maybe one cent)...

Not a Tilly fan so far - she makes me cringe.
Lorca is a strong character because of Jason Isaacs, so good casting there, but I guess he's gonna be the bad rogue captain in the end.
Burnham - I like her better this episode, but I hope they don't go pointing out how smart or amazing she is at every turn.
Saru - a bit of a douche early in the episode, but he's a prey species, so I'll give him a break.
Stamets - Ummm, he sure is overconfident for being a fungi specialist. So far I have a visceral dislike for him.

IMHO this episode was better than the two part opener. The cringe moment for me was the reveal of the fungi forest on the ship and the Klingon saying "ssshhhhhh" - yeah, adorable... laughable, but contrasting with last week's depiction of Klingons it felt weird.

 

I get the feeling this crew wipes itself out of continuity or just everyone dies, a la Rogue One, with the plans for the new drive.

 

Missed this gem the first time:

 

Archer was willing to do commit acts of piracy and torture, to get his own goals done. He even cloned a star fleet officer to harvest him. I'd say Lorca is similar in that respect to Archer and the Sisko.

that would not make sense I hope it is a series of michas seasons, but it would not be bad that in the end michael took command of a ship of section 31

They are standing behind every good context.
