I'm not sure I understand the complaints about Frain as Sarek. I don't have enough to go on yet to see how well he's doing. I really want him to succeed; perhaps I'm just dazzled by his outstanding performance on Orphan Black.
I think he's suffering from not being Mark Lenard. Mark's performance and demeanour is distinctive and unrivalled. It's a bit like how Benedict Cumberbatch is a fine actor but can't come close to being an equal of Montablban's for Khan. Frain just come across as just another Vulcan right now.

I don't think part I on CBS would be enough to entice casuals. They needed to do more to entice someone to subscribe.

And guys, this thread is for discussion of episode ONE, not the second one! There is a separate thread for that. Some of us haven't made it to the second episode yet and I had to scroll quickly and still had one spoiler revealed. Post thoughts on the second ep in the proper thread please!

Eh, I just feel it was bait and switch. Promise a free pilot, but end up only making it half a pilot, and the other half you have to subscribe.
Meh - You vcan see the second episode free. Just sign up for the Free Week CBSAA is always offering; and has since they started the service. There's zero excuse for saying "I can't see the full pilot for free without subbing" as - as long as you have internet and a compatible device or PC with Windows 10; yes, you can.

god i miss the jj abrams star trek movies. at least those FELT like star trek! but this feels like a generic science fiction show desperately trying to be star trek!

Never heard of that. One theory I did hear was there was some sort of psychic discharge involved. :vulcan: But it is called a nerve pinch so I assume its about the nervous system rather than the circulatory system. Looking at MA. Archer, Seven and Odo have done it. It also mentions that in Voyager it was said to resembles damage to the Trapezius nerve bundle.
Ah. Well I'd forgotten about the others.

I'm not even sure where I inferred the idea. It was probably from someplace "outside" Trek. Like BBT or something.

You know a lot of people say that about the Kelvin films.

Though I agree with you 100%.

And a credit card. Your free week/month requires a credit card.

That was likely me. Sorry.

I'm not too bothered. I had AA anyway. For BBT, Madam Secretary, and NCIS.

I will be tuning in for episode 3, because I at least want to see the Discovery on the show called Discovery. If it wasn't for tech support apologizing for bungling my free time with CBSAA, I probably wouldn't have subbed.

I don't know, I guess, when I was a child, if I would have seen "Encounter at Farpoint, Pt. 1" and then told that part 2 of the series pilot was for people who paid, I'm not sure I'd have ever became as hardcore a fan as I am today. I'd have wondered what the hell happened, but I'd have lost interest shortly thereafter. I would have stuck with TOS reruns on TV for years, if I ever decided to check out the "new" series at that point.

You're taking the piss, right? Only Beyond felt like Star Trek.

What these episodes lacked, and what JJ Trek lacked, us that optimistic vision of the future. It's just wham bam, action ma'am. This show needs to show it has more depth than that otherwise I reckon fans will walk away from it pretty fast.

I liked the opening 2 episodes for the most part but more along the ways I liked "Voyager." It was a fun action show but it didn't make me feel the horrors of war or even make me think these people are in a really dire situation which is worse because they want to be that, hence the lack of humor or fun banter. It had to many colorful graphics and fancy lighting to make it feel real which then takes any edge off the drama but it was nice to look at so it works on that level. Also unlike DS9 and it's war it was bringing war to characters we already knew and loved instead waging war with characters your trying to establish.

Burnham and Sau'r were good and with Sau'r he was great. I want to learn more about his people who I guess you might say are basically self- aware cows. Were they created for the sake of being food? That was the impression I got. Sarek didn't work for me and I also wondered why he was always around to talk to Burnham. Isn't he a ambassador and shouldn't he be out doing his job. Why was he even at school during that flashback?

The Klingons were how I thought they would be and how I wished they weren't going to be and that is monsters. They don't seem to have any fun or lives other than gathring in groups and talking about honor. Would it be wrong to show them sometimes just relaxing with a little arm wrestling or head butting and drunkard behavior? They felt like stock villians from a "Voyager" episode who existed just so the crew could get into some space battles.

I got to say I think I am going to have a hard time seeing this as canon and i'm not sure if it's going to be great enough that with any canon conflicts between the other shows that I will feel compelled in my mind to choose "Discovery's" version over the other show's version. Still I don't really care about that for the most part. If it's good that is okay. It doesn't have to feel important or relevant to the franchise. It can be the 3rd "Terminator" movie. I like it and I like watching it but I don't mind if it's disregard if they want to pretend it doesn't exisit when they do new movies.

Did anyone else subconsciously move their jaws while watching the Klingons talk? I'm wondering if it was just me. It just seemed so confining. The actors were trying so hard under those prosthetics. It felt like eating taffy.

"This week on a very special NCIS: the government decides to shut down the US Navy due its startling and almost incomprehensible crime statistics. Can Gibbs save the day by slapping someone? Carl Weathers guest stars!"
You forgot the part about the incomprehensible computer technobabble deus ex machina.

Really, NCIS is just like Star Trek with Caldwell and Archer's less bumbling Grandfather.

Liked it much more than I thought I would. My brother is still a little iffy but he hasn't watched episode two yet.

THV and BotBS are clearly meant to be taken together; THV feels like the first half of a story.

Seeing Burnham in context makes for a better character than the trailers portray.
