Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

I'm not a fan of Seth McFarlane because of his lack of tolerance for people who don't share his beliefs. That said, The Orville seems to feature adventure, fun, character work, and as he noted in a recent interview, actual dramatic storytelling. Those are all things I want from Star Trek in general, but see very little of in Discovery. Had Discovery TRULY drawn from TOS, there would be a mix of humor and adventure with social commentary, focus on character, and drama. No, I haven't seen an episode of the show, but the trailers have shown very dire circumstances, a very old conflict (Federation vs. Klingons) and not any fun at all. The news is depressing and "realistic" enough, so I don't need that from Trek.

I understand that, but even "Coming Next Week" trailers from TOS showed hardly any humor and concentrated on the drama and the issue of that week. The little banter and interplay wasn't evident in those, either.

Well, also the music has always been trying to inspire and excite us, while the soundtrack to these gloomy trailers sounds like it's going to be a zombie flick.

Why would you care? I watch and read plenty of people who don't agree with me and I don't agree with them.

You're kidding, right? Let's count the number of episodes with Nog screaming like an idiot.

No, B5 has better consistent episodes. DS9 suffers from filler episodes. Overall, the Shadow War and the show's other arcs put B5 far above DS9.
And then there was B5 Season 5 - which blew chunks. Why because JMS thought he was only going to get a 4th and not a 5th season so he crammed what would have been season 5 into the latter half of season 4 and we all suffered for that.

Hmm...TOS, huh?

Looking at the list of TOS episodes, there wasn't even a SHREAD of humor until "Shore Leave"....episode **15**.

You know, only Trek fans would obsessively analyze episodes for humorous comments to prove a show was humorless.

Lol!

How many episodes contained direct references to logic?

Had Bill Shatner overacting?

Had red shirts dying?

Had any of the other tropes or themes know as key ingredients of TOS?

It's not about numbers, it's about lasting impressions.

Looks like your deflector shields are working.
