It probably won't fail but I don't see it being well known like TOS or TNG. Most likely it will last for a few seasons and end quietly. Some Trek fans will like it, others won't. There'll be debates on the internet, tech fans will create schematics of ships and the whole cycle will continue again in another decade.
They own it outright. They'll wait and then try again with whatever is popular at the time.
There's always the "vinyl record effect." Look at vinyl records... obsolete technology. And yet, there are generations that were born AFTER the last vinyl record was commercially mass printed in the 1990's (from major record houses, not indie shops), who have caught on. It may just be a fad... because in actuality, records are so limited. They are fragile. Loading lossless sound files taken from quality recordings loaded on an iPod docked and fed through a quality DAC will produce mesmerizing sound quality with the ease of remote control to nearly limitless numbers of songs. Very hard to beat that. Anyway, I digress...
Science Fiction is here to stay. It may ebb and flow in general social interest, but it'll always be around, because we live in a technological society where future imagined technology is a compelling story vehicle. So, there could be a future Star Trek series. Frankly, I think that after JJ Abrams is finished with his next Star Trek movie, he should wrap it up. I don't think the rebooted universe has much promise to go for decades on end. I'm sick and tired of the Enterprise being ripped to shreds or completely destroyed in every movie.
The only caveat? Spock Lives. There will always be a Spock. He's just too awesome not to keep continuing somehow.
I give Trek another 20-30 years before all the main actors who go to convention are too old, the fans dead or have moved on and the franchise totally dead.

I unfortunately have to agree with this assessment. I don't think the younger generation is going to keep Star Trek alive. The fact that all we see is either reboots of the original series or prequels, kind of supports that. If younger people were truly Trekies, we would have had a future series by now (continuing the timeline after Voyager).

You're missing my point. Conduct a poll and find out how many people younger than 25 are big Star Trek fans, INCLUDING the rebooted movies. For the people that answer they do like the rebooted movies (particularly the girls), ask them WHY, I bet 90% of the answers you get are "because Chris Pine is in it". Then ask them how much they like Star Trek TNG or Voyager. Ask them if they even know who William Shatner is. Ask them if they've heard of Star Trek Discovery.

Star Trek fans have always been the minority of science fiction fans, which in turn is a minority in TV fans. Genre fiction has rarely been known for its giant broad appeal, with Star Wars and Star Trek being exceptions, among others.

I disagree. First of all if Star Trek ever "loses its relevance" what will that say about the state of humanity? Nothing good, I can assure you of that. And second of all people who have no idea who Gene Roddenberry is are highly unlikely to care about a show or its heritage. It plays a big role.
I disagree. Humanity has always found different ways to communicate optimism, morals and the like. Star Trek is just one incarnation of it and if the storytelling method is irrelevant then society moves on.

That has nothing to do with continuing the timeline after VOY, which is what you predicated the success of Star Trek on.
