Walking Dead Season 7 Discussion - Spoilers possible!

The following is a very MINOR spoiler for those who haven't read the comics--more of a tease really.

Another possibility this is setting up is that Oceanside will take the place of the Kingdom next episode or an episode in October in the final incident leading to all out war.

Spoilers

Awesome ending for Sasha. Makes you wonder if Sonequia joined star trek because she knew her time was up or didbthry kill her off because of star trek.

Had to look it up to be sure, but I knew this episode was directed by Greg Nicotero, his fingerprints were all over it and I loved it.

What?! Sasha dies?! I totally didn't see that coming! [/sc]

I thought it was a pretty good episode and it pretty much went they way I thought it would with the same beats though there were a couple surprises in there. Quite a few parallels to stuff from the comics (Michonne's fight with a Scavenger, the stuff with Sasha's death reveal.)

Interested to see where next season goes and how it handled the "war" which I suspect will be wrapped up by the mid-season finale.

Was disappointed the Judas/Jadis thing turned out to be true it struck me as too on the nose and there seemed to be more set-up for Gregory being the one who was the "little birdie." It's a shame because I actually like Jadis, find he kind of funny and interesting. She asked for a three-way with Rick and Michonne, how could you not like her? ;) I wonder when/how/if they'll return and what side they'll be on, maybe they'll realize The Saviors aren't the right ones to be on the side of.

Ah, more superficial gunshot wounds.

Was expecting to see more from Dwight's end of his betrayal/aligning with Alexandria.

So, where is Gregory?

I liked Maggie's little monologue at the end and the connections with Glenn, the first episode, and Herschel's watch.

Awesome moment with Shiva and the arrival of The Kingdom soon followed by The Hilltop.

Good finale, did have fist-pumping awesome, cheering moments and was quite the bleak downer the end of last season was and also not a cold cliff-hanger which I'm sure they learned their lesson on after last year.

So, Eugene really has gone fully to the Dark Side, huh?

I'm surprised Negan so "easily" allowed Sasha to ride in the casket all the way to Alexandria rather than getting in it shortly before arriving, certainly even he would have assumed she wouldn't have enough air in there to breathe for the entire trip to Alexandria. (Which, 2 hours by truck means it's probably the greater part 150 miles away from Alexandria depending on how much leeway we want to give them on the speed of the vehicles, if they're governed, and how easily they can travel on raods that've not been maintained in 3-4 years.

Didn't believe for a moment Carl was going to die/Rick was going to lose his hand(s) I knew a contrivance was going to save him like it did at Terminus. Rick: The only thing that saves me are loyal tigers and miraculously aimed bottle rockets.

The Scavengers travel by the most practical vehicle in an apocalypse (a bicycle) and the least practical (a garbage truck) that somehow seems to fit.

Good episode, already starting to see the hate float around on social media, oh, Internet. But I liked it some good moments, well directed with the cuts between Sasha in the casket, the dream/past sequence with her and Abraham, the "current" events, and the dream sequence with her and Maggie looking out into the sun-set. (Which actually seemed sort-of out of place and like the one series of shots that didn't seem to fit other than as an artistic showcase that both of these women lost the man they love at the start of the season.)

Let's get ready for war!

Oh Rick, how many mistakes can you make? Arming and trusting the Mad Max people? Trusting Dwight and letting him go? Stuff and thangs indeed.

Also screw Eugene, he deserves a bullet in the head. I was hoping that Rick or Rosita was going to pop him when he was up on the flatbed.

"The First Day of the Rest of Your Life" - Season 7 finale--

Sasha: goes bye bye. Her dying thoughts--jumping back from Abraham on the eve of walking into Negan's trap, to 5B when she (and Maggie) watched the sunrise--was a mild parallel to Tyreese's dying visions of dead friends & enemies. Thankfully, the series did not go the comic Holly route since that was used on Fear the Walking Dead. Instead, Sasha was allowed to spark the war as a Trojan Horse--the promise of her friends winning (ultimately) worth the cost of her life.

Negan: Like the Governor before him, he has no off switch--he's determined to march his people to their deaths, His side-eyeing Eugene (regarding Sasha's fate) takes away any advantage Eugene managed to create.
Now that Negan knows Maggie is alive (yet another "betrayal"), and Gregory off in the wilds doing...something tied to Negan, she might be season eight's must hunted among the protagonists, with Enid & Judith possibly used as bait and/or ultimate punishment for her.

The Grimes family: Loyal no matter how dark things get. This season presented several moments for Carl to reinforce his unique position as a child-survivor sometimes seeing the bigger picture before the adults. Even as he faced the threat of Lucille (again), he was a steely customer throughout, and earlier, took out several of the Scavengers like a seasoned assassin. No nonsense. Of course, he--like Rick--were staring down death in the line-up, yet were instantly zeroing in on the distant scream believed to be Michonne. Hardened by the world, but still embracing the value of a family.

Rick fighting back-to-back with Morgan was no accident from director Nicotero; after their season long differences, it was fitting the two longest-lived characters (in terms of when they were introduced) in TWD's history. Effective bookend.

Loved Rick leaning back after it dawned on him that Jadis wanted him for herself. Just about any guy would have that reaction to her.

Rosita: A moment of humanity as she was teary-eyed watching Eugene during his "I am Negan" speech.

Carol: Wise to have her back in action, but making her biggest contribution her concern for Morgan, which should carry over to season 8 as a major sub-plot for this duo.

Overall, a season that began with shocking murder and ends with hope, though shadowed by the memories of Glenn and Abraham.

The ending was the most effective part of the finale imo. The calvary type rescue was too by the book. Looking forward to Discovery!... :) Well, and TWD epic battle next year, although the shark is swimming around ready to jump.

The cavalry rescue was telegraphed but I was still looking forward to it.

It was also pretty obvious what was happening with Sasha but I still overlooked that she'd reanimate afterward. And how often does that turn out to be a positive thing?

I keep envisioning walker-Sasha giving the rest of the group a thumbs-up at the end of the episode and then shambling off into the woods. Never happen on this show, but would've been fun.

Not sure what you mean by this, but I'd be all over that. Let her take me for "herself" given her behavior and, "He's yours?" to Michonne she certainly seems the dominant time, which, sign me up!

Same here. It's such an obvious thing to happen in this world too. I can't believe it didn't occur to me.

Overall I enjoyed the episode but I was slightly underwhelmed for some reason. I can't put my finger on exactly why.

Eh, was somewhat underwhelmed by this one. Whole season was basically a big stalling action to get to this point, and then it didn't feel like it delivered enough. Left in a better state than last year's finale, but still just sorta blah. Like it needed one more episode after this and didn't get it. Maybe I'm getting used to the GoT style of seasons, but this felt like the big episode 9 that needed one more to wrap up the season after the big action.

Plus, when you get down to it, not much really happened this season at all. If you strip it all away, literally this could have been episode 2, really. They got brained by Negan, got mad, went home. Negan shows up, they're pissed and ready to kill everyone. What did the rest really do for us? And even now, the majority of the action/change has been put off until next season, so this was just the opening salvo.

Meh.

Laughed when saw that the teaser says "major character dies". Sasha was telegraphed forever, and also have a hard time saying she was a major character. She's exactly the sort of cannon fodder they introduce specifically to kill off, what else was she doing for us?

Overall, I found it really riveting.. Great finale that, while it had some tragic elements, ended on a better note than last year... Was good to see that.

I was a little bothered by how badly Michonne got the crap kicked out of her.. She's a warrior.. And yes, she was taken somewhat by surprise, but still... Just seemed off-character to me.. Yes, in the end she won, but I didn't think she'd get beaten that badly.

Tiger ex machina! Fun episode. Does the production team keep count of the people involved in these big fights? You see them spraying each other with bullets for minutes and countles redshirts getting hit and the aftermath is what, 5 to ten stiffs laying around.

On Talking Dead they said they handed out over 200 guns for the big battle scene. If that helps.

I am stunned by how good that digital tiger looked. For all I could tell it looked real. The CGI is just incredible for a tv show.

200 guns??? I think why someone upthread felt the finale was underwhelming...the battle itself, when King Ezekiel & company came in felt LESS than a couple dozen...like the big numbers the scavengers had suddenly disappeared.

Definitely disappointed than the Scavengers were traitors...hope most of them died..or become a 3rd army battling BOTH.

Loved Ezekiel & company coming to the rescue, and hope Rick has a moment with him to REALLY express gratitude.

I was still holding out hope that Sasha might still be around (at least until they found out how much of a success/failure Star Trek Discovery is), but when they had all those scenes for her...it was the end.

I was also surprised that it was only Sasha who died (from the "good guys")...thought there was supposed to be more (at least from hints).

So Sasha thought they needed Rosita-- but apparently not as a bombmaker anymore, unless the scavengers sabotaged it.

So how much time do Rick (with a GUNSHOT wound) and Michonne need before they are ready to fight....and what will change the Ocenaside leader's mind?

And a question -- does anyone know how big Negan's empire is? We didn't see Gavin around, so wondering where he was, and if the rebel alliance could recruit more communities)

I wasn't surprised about the Scavengers being traitors. I didn't trust their leader from the start. She seemed to be an opportunist.

Good question.

Probably decently sized. Just hoping that he doesn't keep on coming back like a bad penny.

My original supposition was that Negan ran something like 200 Saviors. Less is implausible because the 40+ that were killed last season would've hit them too hard. More SEEMED implausible because the scavenging/confiscation from Hilltop, etc. didn't seem like it could support many more. But now we've also seen that the Sanctuary has "forced production", for lack of a better word. They're not just scavenging and skimming, they're getting organized and using their slaves to actively produce. Operating that way, they could support more.

Gavin probably wasn't based out of the Sanctuary at all. Seems like he'd be running another outpost like the satellite station. He might've been called in for Negan's new army, though.
