Windows 10....one year later....disscussion, thoughts.

It is a lot easier now. I had to do a reinstall after a disastrous Ubuntu issue, and it only took 20 minutes from start to finish, and looked like the image above (save for the classic start menu, and Rainmeter clock).

Classic Shell: http://www.classicshell.net/
I use the "Classic with Two Columns" option, but you can choose from several different start menu styles, even XP and 7.

I think that was one of the first things I downloaded for Win8:) - Still using it on 10 too:)

I need to install Windows onto my iMac. I have a program I need to run and it only runs on Windows. I don't have time to buy or build a Windows PC machine (Something it looks like I will have to do now) I haven't used Windows since Vista. I'm going to be running a very intensive program, taxing my iMac. Should I go with Home or Pro version? Has anyone used BootCamp to run Windows 10 on a Mac? How has been the performance? I have the 27" 5K iMac with 4 gHZ i7, 24 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 and AMD Radeon R9 M395X 4096 MB.

Have you looked to see if it runs under WINE? Wouldn't need Windows at all in that case.

Running a Windows VM would also be an option if you can tolerate the performance hit.

I wouldn't want to run this program in WINE even if it was available to do so. However running a Virtual Machine is something I hadn't considered, I'll have to ponder on it. However I suspect I'll be running Windows on my Mac, probably from an SSD attached through Thunderbolt.

look at parallels from vmware to run Windows in a virtual machine. You won't need a seperate hard disk to run it from. It will create a file containing the vm.

Think Oracle's Virtual box is available for OS X and is a free product.

Windows will cruise with you specs.

And windows home will do what you need and be cheaper than Pro. If you are going to buy an ssd get the windows at the same time as you should be able to get an oem version that will save a few more dollars.

I feel so dirty, like going back to an ex. Decided to just install it, made a 75gb partition. I thought about running VM but what I have to do is very critical. It will probably only be for a short time, gonna build myself a Windows PC this summer.

You say "very critical" as if it wouldn't work in a VM. I don't understand.
It's not that it wouldn't work in VM, I just don't want to take the chance. I know that's not really rational but this event I'm covering is huge for me and could change my future.

My Windows 10 experience is ably summed up by the good Mr E. Blackadder:

And people will get over it again.

They should be grateful they are moving forwards.

For work I occassioanally have to work with Windows XP and it can be very painful when missing the ability to login a second user without logging out the first not to mention have to remember where somethings are located and not being able to use some short cuts.

Still running into issues with my mom's laptop. Now it's getting to the point where she isn't able to log in. Meaning she can't see the log in screen. Had it fixed before (dealing with the log in issues), but now it's come back and led up to this. So for now, she's laptop less. Can't do anything on my end, as it's above my pay grade.

I'll be one of them. Yuck. I don't like it. It's a set up meant for touch screens, which a lot of people's laptops aren't meant for. Microsoft, the idiot company. :brickwall:

I wonder how much space this stupid upgrade will take up? I'm running very low on room.

All the stupid happened when Gates left the company.

Glad I ditched Windows... been on Linux Mint for a few months now and for the usual desktop stuff I can very much do without Windows.

Just bought a new desktop with touchscreen and it is much smoother and nicer than my previous one with no touchscreen and that I upgraded...........I think I might actually.........like it. :alienblush:

Windows 10 is everything Windows 8 should have been. If you don't like Metro, 10 won't throw it in your face the way 8 did. The only thing I don't like about it is the way it bolts on touch-friendly settings while holding onto the legacy control panel style settings. It's a needless duplication of UI, and it can be confusing. But if you just ignore the touch stuff and use it as you would Windows 7 then it's fine.

As for the UI refresh, I find it hard to believe there won't be a way to set the UI back to what it is now or make it look like even older Windows as you already can. People who haven't learned to change their theme and feel trapped by the defaults really have nobody to blame but themselves for not learning the ropes.

Anyone still using XP is in the dark-ages and just asking for their computer to be hacked to pieces. If you're gonna hunker down, hunker down with 7 because 8 and 10 are really just Windows 7 with the Metro UI bolted on top.

I am unhappy with Windows 10. My computer has been exceptionally sluggish ever since I installed the free upgrade to 10.

My laptop's performance has been mostly better on Win10 than Win7, and mine's somewhere between 6 and 8 years old.
