I officially began my journey through all Star Trek on October 9th...

The NX Enterprise crew wasn't that bad.
I maintain that they are what you get when you ask for volunteers for deep space exploration missions that are absolutely positively certain death. You know, like a one way trip to mars. The Best and Brightest stand back and watch what happens while the cluelessly enthusiastic step up. At least they are cheaper than chimps and don't piss off the animal rights activists.

You're forgetting Porthos. Putting him on that ship must have been torture. Archer should have been charged with animal abuse.

Archer claimed he was a "Service Animal". He was trained to detect and react to "Sudden Onset Human Stupidity". "One Night in Sickbay" was a result of too much stimulus for him.

As someone with an immediate family member with a service dog, I hate fakers like Archer. They make it worse for everyone else. Although as bad as the fakers are, the people who make snide comments because they don't believe the dog is real are still jerks. If it's not real the comment does nothing but make you* feel like a big man/woman. If it is real you just judged a person with some extreme physical issues, hurting their feelings and making their lives that much harder. But if it wasn't for fakers like Archer others wouldn't have reason to doubt legitimacy.

Archer sucks.

*general you, not "you" as in person I was replying to. Nothing wrong with his joke.

Little bit of defence for the NX Enterprise crew coming.

Even if they didn't seem to be on the top of their game, the same thing might have happened to anyone at their place, there wasn't much of space exploration history, Enterprise NX was like losing their space virginity.

Oh I know. One of my dogs was certified. He was a Seizure Dog and could uncannily detect that a seizure was about to happen and get help. He was a small strange looking fluffy lapdog. Not what you would consider a "Working Service Dog". We used to get some weird comments on the rare occasions we had him out in public in his vest. (My personal favorite was always the number of people who wanted to see a demonstration of this ability...)

I would like to think that it would take an Extra Special Kind of Space Virgin to let the Captain's Dog pee on the natives Holy Tree during a first contact mission.

It's amazing the number of people who feel the need to judge others level of physical disability and needs.

You know that him saying that Archer claimed it was a service dog was a joke, and not something that the character actually did on the show or in backstory, right? That Archer isn't really someone faking a malady to claim a service dog? :p

Yeah that's one of my favourites of the season. It was quite an emotional one, and I loved the end when Seven is crying at the end and thinks she is still malfunctioning.

I maintain my theory that Portho's was a certified Service Animal trained in alerting on "sudden onset human stupidity". This is also why we rarely see him in scenes with Trip. he had a secondary mission. He was the only one Admirral Forrest trusted with the Destruct Codes. (The ones Archer had would just open the airlocks to flush everybody out and put the ship on autopilot for home)

Imperfection was a very good episode. Janeway and Seven's relationship is fully on-display and it's kind of become one of my favourite parts of the show, despite being something I used to complain about quite a bit.

The best part is it's all about characters! And mortality! When in doubt, write a story about death or mortality or aging. It works literally 99% of the time.
Imperfection is a great episode. One of the seasons best. Which is then followed by one you have to check twice to make sure you are watching the right show... Drive isn't a "bad" episode. At least not in the way of say Threshold /shudder was. It's just a strange fit. Like somebody found a script meant for another show and just ran with it.

Edit, the directors cut of TMP does spruce it up a bit. Slicing out the broad slow effects shots and giving back a bit more character stuff.

I'm curious, which version of TWOK did you watch, theatrical, ABC, or DC?

I grew up with ABC (and had read the novelization a bunch as a kid). Never saw the theatrical until I was in my 20's and wondered what happened to all these scenes I remembered, especially Preston being Montgomery's nephew.

I never understood why they cut that bit of info out of the Theatrical release. The other changes you could see. Just minor bits of info communicated elsewhere. But the Preston as Scotty's nephew was an extremely useful bit. It amped up the tension and the sacrifice. It put a face on Kirk's failure. And it played into the other themes of aging and youth that intertwined the story.

Granted as soon as Preston is identified as Scotty's Nephew in those cuts, you know he is a dead man. It's like they painted a red shirt on him. But sometimes you gotta go with the obvious.

Saavik being half Romulan was also a nice bit, explained why she seemed emotional at times, and helped further the appeal of her as Spock's protégé. It would have also made her participation in the TUC conspiracy (had they been able to get Alley or Curtis back like they wanted) more impactful as she could have been working for the Romulans all along. It also would have helped show Spocks interest in Romulan Reunification was a long running pursuit and not a late life passion. Altogether, it would be a perfect entry into the canon.

Alas, it was never said on screen. Although, if I remember correctly, it still must have been planned to keep her half rommie during TSFS scripting as I'm fairly certain her Romulan heritage is also mentioned in its novelization.

I'm a bit annoyed as to why they didn't relegate even a couple of minutes at the end to Tom and B'Elanna's wedding.
Maybe the writers thought since we already got to see the wedding of the fake Tom and B'Elanna in Course Oblivion, that we didn't need to see it again.

The Doctor is a cool guy. I feel like I could go to The Doctor and he'd solve all my problems. If I'm depressed and don't feel like going to school some mornings, he's the guy I'd go to to make me feel better. I wish I was friends with him, life would be a lot easier. Oh well.
Had to double check the forum you posted in to make sure the doctor who you are talking about is actually from Voyager. :D
