Discovery has been delayed until May 2017

They did say they were already making a profit on the series. If that's true, they may have little incentive to actually distribute the series and incur those costs! ;)

Mr Awe

Holy crap that would be so awesome. Not actually make the series but still pull a profit of the hype! That would be epic.

I am disappointed, I wonder when they first started planning out the show? Well I would rather them work things out on quality and making sure that things fall into place without being rushed to get it to air than to be monday night quarterbacking about how they rushed things. So I guess I'll HAVE to be patient.

Most TV shows work with crushing deadlines from everything I've heard about the process. Besides, it seems like the original turned out okay, crushing deadlines and all.

Maybe all the hype and expectation that has developed, has taken CBS by surprise, and so they want a higher bar to reach for in terms of quality.

Maybe the reaction to that early footage of the ship, has made the team up their quality standards for the CG.

Maybe they want to see the fallout from the US Election results to influence the storylines/characters...

Either way it means more waiting, but hopefully it will be worth it.

Well, I for one sure am bummed, but I'd rather they take their time and deliver a good show than half-ass it.

This news doesn't come as a surprise, but it is a disappointment. Despite the buzz surrounding Discovery the production team could do more to tease the community with some artwork and wallpapers. The stuff so far has been disappointing. I hope they are not pulling another STID/Harrison by keeping needless secrets.

Turned out, trying to place it in two series as both a prequel to TOS and a sequel to Battlefield Earth didn't play well to the test audiences.

Possibilities that occur to me, some of which have been mentioned:
1. The show isn't ready or needs reworking somehow.
2. CBS All-Access isn't ready and needs reworking somehow, or, CBS wants to start with more new content that they're still developing *aside* from Discovery.
3. CBS believes that Rogue One or some other property from a competing company is going to be big in a way that would detract from the launch, so they're moving the launch to avoid overlap.
4. Turns out, Discovery IS based on the Battle of Axanar, and now *they* have stolen some of the little bit of *original* IP that Peters & Co had created and have been hit with a cease and desist.
5. Discovery will be retitled Star Wars and the release date has been set to May 4th.

I guess the good thing about the delay, is that it gives CBS time to get its collective shit together with All-Access.

I'm not surprised they pushed back the date to May. I like the ideas of well told stories for a tv series seems like a good idea.

And while it is successful it's also pretty awful, the writing is atrocious, the acting often mediocre to bad.
Meanwhile, over on The CW the procedural crime drama with zombies aka iZombie is a fantastic show! So maybe CBS's idea wasn't that bad, they smelled the stink of awfulness from Kirkman's pitch and suggested something good instead.
It should also be noted that CBS owns half of The CW (ironic, considering A. it was a merger of The WB and UPN, and B. the Viacom Divorce).

Who knows? For all we know, it could be on network television all season, and they just need space for it in the schedule, so they shoved it to the summer.

They just need to keep giving us tidbits of info as they become available. A kind of hypo-spray to get us through the rough patch ahead. :sigh:

Once we get set leaks, casting and filming reports. That's when I will get more excited.

The extra time may be good for ship designs, and planning out the smaller details for a possible technical manual for the ship etc.

Just imagine if we were in 2005 and you were told that you had to wait till 2017 for the next ST series! The horror, the horror (Apocalypse Now)
