But it isn't. The chicken nor the egg have sold well where the Abramsverse is concerned.

I don't recall them even trying to sell micromachines or spaceship toys other than the big Enterprise from 09 and the Burger Kng tie ins. I found a key chain with a micromachines-sized nuEnterprise and cut the chain off. Star Trek Attack Wing is the only way to get one-handed toy-sized Trek ships, and they are 15 bucks each while being unfriendly to children. Star Wars can support metal Hot Wheels ships, X-Wing game ships, and plastic micro machines, and TFA had shit all for original spaceships. The toy companies aren't even testing the waters for Star Trek. I hated Into Darkness, but I'd buy a Vengeance or two if someone would just sell them.

If someone can tell me where to buy the drink toppers, I'll buy the crap out of them.

Möbius Models often end up selling pre-built versions of their kits, so maybe there's some hope (would just have to hope that doing so isn't blocked by anyone else's license).

I hated the JJ-prise, but the redesign in Beyond was really nice, I might consider getting a little model if someone makes it.

The problem was that not many were buying the toys. The big three US toy retailers--Walmart, Target, and Toys R Us--were indeed stuck with more product than they could move. Releasing a lot of figures in multiple scales just didn't work. The reason why there wasn't a proposed Wave 2 was because those retailers said no after having to mark down a lot of Wave 1 product. Retailers also didn't like having so many figures in Starfleet uniforms from the start as they thought such an assortment didn't look that great on the shelves (it's ultimately why McCoy and Chekov were released in cadet uniforms).

By that logic, that truth should apply to Star Wars toys too.

I agree that releasing multiple scale figures the way they did was a little presumptuous on playmates part, They should have held off on that till the fall wave. I still think that the main reason the line flopped was because kids just aren't interested in Star Trek. The role play toys were a dud as well, Those should have been a for sure bet as cheap as they were had kids been excited about the line, regardless of how the rest of the line was handled. Personally, If had been in charge of the line, the first wave would have been:

"3.25" figures ONLY of Kirk (In space jump suit), Spock, Bones, Uhura, Nero, Nero's second in command, The smaller beast creature on the ice planet (was part of the second wave), That would have been a good mix of good and bad guys I think. Bridge set, (I would have made the bridge playset have a plastic floor that the bridge panels that came with the figures would have "snapped" into instead of the vinyl mat thing) I would have had a shuttle vehicle that 4 figures could have fit into instead of the Transporter Set, Light and Sound Enterprise. Maybe that would have helped with sales, but I doubt it. I just think kids wouldn't have jumped on board.

Good news for those of us that were interested in the cup toppers mini ships, but weren't able to find them. Walmart is selling a special Ed. Blu-ray of beyond with 3 "star trek mini ships" included. I'm willing to bet these will be the cup toppers with different stands. No pics unfortunately, but I'm betting that's what the ships are. Also, you can pre order the special Ed. Of the movie at Amazon, and you get a larger USS Franklin model. (But no mini ships):

The thing is, though, that the toy line sold initially well prior to the release of Star Trek XI. It was after the movie was released that was the problem. All movie tie-in toys experience a sharp drop off in sales after the movie is released--Star Wars toys included--which is why we see such toys sometimes released months ahead of the movie. It's also why we tend to see smaller follow-up waves afterwards. In the case of Star Trek XI toys, Playmates overestimated the demand of them in Wave 1, and the big three retailers were stuck with far more product than they could sell in their backrooms. No way were they going to order the proposed Wave 2 if they were still drowning in Wave 1 stuff. It was the lack of interest from the big three retailers more so than customers that killed the Star Trek XI line.

In comparison, Funko was able to recently do a line of TOS "retro" action figures that they were able to push through Target and Toys R Us stores. They were almost twice the price of Playmates' Star Trek XI line and perhaps more crude-looking, but they sold because they were released in two very small waves of about four figures each.

The demand is there for Star Trek toys at the retail level, but there just aren't many takers.

It was just too many figures all at once. Hasbro actually overdid it and flooded the market too with the Star Wars Episode I line a decade earlier, but it had the benefit of Star Wars being a stronger toy brand. But Hasbro learned from their mistake and toned it down a bit for their Episodes II & III lines (even the current Episode VII line is smaller & more spaced out in comparison).

Only Funko showed an interest in doing something from Beyond, and that was in the form of their exaggerated POP! figures.

Ugh--why anyone wants those is beyond me... I know folks love them--not a bash mind you..

ive always collected stuff for each ST film (the starlog movie magazine, comic adapations, novels, making of books, cinefantastique issue, 27x40 poster, movieposter postcards, model kits etc etc)

So far for STB only got the STB issue of Empire magazine (subscribers cover) with 50th supplement (im actually going to buy the newsstand cover edition as well as its got a great cover)

Got to get the Official magazine (Titan) that not out yet and a few other magazines special editions that look to be more to do with the 50th (Time, Newsweekx2, EW, TV Guide)

but no comic prequel like there was for ST09/STID or comic adaptation like there wasn't for STID either (theres just 'Manifest Destiny which isnt a proper prequel), no novel (first time a trek movie has never had a novel tie in!) and no look to be any 'making of' type books (look up STB on amazon and its a sorry tale )

My flying Enterprise arrived yesterday. I got three flights out of it and it stopped working. 1-800 number says nothing to do but return it

Between it and the Khan blue ray error I'm 0/2 on working merchandise

I got one night time flight in with the Enterprise. I turned on the Khan soundtrack on my outdoor speaker for ambiance. It was pretty cool. The model looks great at night with the lights.

I saw on the Anovos website they've cancelled the Beyond phaser kit due to lack of interest. Not too surprising when QMx sold a completely finished phaser for 1/5 the price.

Paramount may not have has the right to do anything with the 50th Anniversary. Everything is trademarked under CBS.

There was a dearth of merchandise for "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan", mainly because stores got stuck with unsold ST:TMP merchandise. ST II had a novelization, a Starlog movie magazine, the soundtrack LP, but no action figures and no comic adaptation (until IDW's recent retro mini-series). Corgi mini ships of the Enterprise and Klingon ship were simply rebranded TMP models (as "Vengance of Khan"). The Photonovel was b/w. Khan's "broken" pendant, a Starfleet insignia and a TMP admiral's pin were available in cast metal, plus there were ceramic beer steins featuring either Kirk, Spock or Khan. That was essentially it.

Merchandise for a sequel is often estimated from sales of its predecessor. STiD had very little merchandise, too.
