Agents of SHIELD: Season 3 - Discussion (SPOILERS LIKELY)

An incredible ride from scene one. Loved it. I thought the device of the traveling crucifix was effective and well used. I do agree with the Life Model Decoy coda feeling tacked on. And the six month jump forward that preceded it was jarring, but that part did tie up the dangling thread of Daisy having promised to protect Robin.

Maybe John Hanna can be the new Doctor
He would be too similar to Capaldi (who has become one of my very favorite Doctors in his time thus far in the role) to follow him directly. I'd rather it be Hayley Atwell!

Yes, really liked the finale. Agree with all re: John Hannah. He has been great since his first appearance. Yes, the Hive/Lincoln scene was unexpected and cast both characters in a very respectable light in the end.

I wouldn't mind seeing more of Ward as a LMD.

May wasn't in the scene, so I'm thinking maybe she is the new director.

Daisy mentioned to the little girl about introducing her to a man who liked animals, too. I immediately thought she may have been referring to Cal. I'd love to see him again. Perhaps Daisy has found some way to rekindle their relationship.

Nice Matrix-like scene for Daisy at the end. Agree with all re; Chloe Benet's acting. She's come a long way.

IGN has a post finale interview up with Maurissa Tancheroen and Jed Whedon.
They don't say we will definitely with 100% certainty never see Hive and/or Brent Dalton, but it does sound like they approached this as the end for both the actor and the character. I wouldn't mind seeing him pop up in flashbacks, or other smaller roles, but I'm kind of glad to see Dalton go. They really seemed to be struggling to find reasons to keep him around the last couple seasons. Hive was a nice way to make him feel necessary again, but I wouldn't have wanted to see that story dragged out for more than just this season just to keep Dalton around.

Chloe Bennet Speaks!
During a Q&A session at Wizard World Des Moines this weekend, the S.H.I.E.L.D. star was asked why Tony Stark or Steve Rodgers haven’t dropped by to help fight Hive, an evil ancient Inhuman. “I don’t know,” Bennet replied, “People who make movies for Marvel, why don’t you acknowledge what happens on our show? Why don’t you guys go ask them that? Because they don’t seem to care!”

Probably not the first to point it out, but did the final scene with Daisy & Lincoln remind anyone else of this? Yeah that's right Lincoln haters, he went out like Captain America!
Only there's no way they're digging him out of the ice in 70 years and there are no kids playing Agents of SHIELD in the streets to remember him.
Makes it more tragic in a way since *nobody* on the outside knew he existed or that he died saving the world.

You can't hand over what you don't control, Pres. Ellis might hand it over. And Talbot can be a Major again!

Pretty sure Coulson did control SHIELD, at least prior to the jump forward. They were only working *with* the US government and using the ATCU as a public front, they never submitted to government authority. Indeed, Coulson flatly refused to adhere to the Accords.

And science hunch was a great line. Maybe John Hanna can be the new Doctor, but he's not British, is he?

Considering Scotland is indeed in Great Britain...no, you're right he's not British at all. ;)

Did anyone think that the person Quake wanted the family to meet was Mr. Hyde?
A friend who has a practice and "likes animals too". Almost certainly her dad. A bit sloppy of her to get that close if she's on the run as it's an obvious place to watch for her, as we saw. Either there's a lot more going on here than they're leading us to believe, or she's *very* confident in her ability to get away undetected.
Probably the latter since that's basically what she did.

Wouldn't surprise me if the new director does adhere to the Accords.

The newspaper clippings certainly seemed to imply as much.

Of course there could be some misdirection going on here and "director" might not mean what we think it does.

Considering who ever it is gives Coulson his marching orders and this was mentioned in a private conversation between Mack and Coulson I'm think new SHIELD management. Especially since the resolution of the Hive situation was probably the sort skin of the teeth thing that tends to get people fired.

Maybe. Maybe not.
Seems unlikely that with this kind of tease that they're not somehow messing with expectations with a little misdirection.

Lets see doesn't tell anyone about the planet devastating inhuman running around, the plan to stop said planet devastating inhuman lets him into their base where he mutates several SHIELD agents and practically gives him the means to also mutate everyone on 3 continents, and the only way to stop all of this once and for all ends in a death. Yeah I could see Coulson being in a little hot water in the aftermath. Especially since he admits the whole thing got started by his revenge rampage.

Coulson being fired implies he answers to someone higher up. He does not. Though Fury may be the closest thing to someone that can give him orders. And generally when you remove the head of an organization, you don't let them hang around running manhunts.

The only thing that makes sense in such a scenario is if he chose to step down and appointed someone else. Probably May since otherwise she'd be with him instead of Mack.

I think that Coulson might be in a position at this point that Ellis is calling the shots if SHIELD wants to keep its off-the-books-but-legal status.

The Prez can fire any of his secretaries for almost no reason?

He doesn't fire them...he "accepts their resignation".

Is there any significance to the name AIDA in the comics?

I mentioned this upthread, but it' the name of the AI used by the Squadron Supreme's Tom Thumb.

Probably not the first to point it out, but did the final scene with Daisy & Lincoln remind anyone else of this?

Yep.

And it wouldn't surprise me if Ellis used that to demote Coulson so as to put someone in charge that will take their marching orders from the US government. Especially if he wasn't happy with how the whole Hive thing went down.

Zephyr One being hijacked twice by Inhumans when she's designed to be SHIELD's defacto representative vessel, everything operated out of and backed up to her, is going to get you busted down a rank. At least.

That and letting them trash their headquarters, also twice, just proved SHIELD was not ready to operative on the level again.

Good thing Daisy didn't know about Theta Protocol, that would have been even messier.

I'm wondering a few possibilities:

6 months from now is the middle of November but the season starts in September, usually. Will they pick up right from this scene, or start in September to build up to this in November?

Or possibly never actually show this scene, at least the way it was shown. I may be too suspicious, but I had the feeling this is just a Daisy deep cover, she got away just too easy. SHIELD or whoever Coulson and Mac are working for don't have a helicopter?

Or possibly the season finale took place 2 months ago. The thing about serialized storylines is that there's not a lot of downtime between installments, so they could take place in considerably less than real time.
