Spoilers Supergirl - Season 1

Krypton is the planet, the stuff that hurts Kryptonians is Kryptonite.

The cape doesn't give her the power to fly.

Whether or not she uses the bathroom was still a subject of debate last time I checked.
Why a cape. I love Astra and Non's (and bad supergirls) look and I like the incredibles explaination for why capes are bad. They seem so cumbersome.

The cape is for inexperienced fliers who need help turning corners.

Kryptonian soldiers probably had ARMYTRAINING (snigger) under a yellow sun during BasicTraining.

At first, I wasn't expecting to like this much. Stories where conflict arises from a character being under a spell or a personality change of some sort feel like cheats to me, because it isn't coming from the characters themselves, just the thing that happened to them. But it turned into one of the most powerful and effective episodes of the series, with some breathtakingly emotional moments.

Let's see... I loved Cat's acceptance of Supergirl's mental breakdown -- "Don't worry, it happens." But her speech denouncing Supergirl was really powerful and sad, and Flockhart was just brilliant. That moment where her facade slipped just a bit and she briefly made a movement that was like wiping a tear from her eye was masterfully underplayed. And Cat's acceptance after the fact, the quiet scene on the balcony, was terrific too.

Kara with James at the club was... disturbing. It's probably the first time in James's life that he's known the feeling women have to cope with frequently -- being faced with the sexual attention of someone who's much stronger than you and unwilling to take no for an answer.

Kara's confrontation with Alex was heartbreaking. I cried a little then, and I cried a lot when Kara cried in shame upon her recovery. That was wrenching. And J'onn revealing himself to save Alex -- to save both of them -- was stunning. What really got me was that smile he gave when he chose to stand down and be arrested. That sense of contentment in his choice -- and, no doubt, great relief that the hiding and the lies are finally over.

The Superman III bar scene homage was a nice tension-breaker, and a nice nod to a film I think is underrated. And I love it that the show isn't afraid to do the corny "little kid admires the hero and is then disillusioned" bit.

- Maxwell Lord.. biggest flaw in the episode. Ins't Supergirl going haywire an early christmas present for him? Isn't that what he was always claiming that you can't trust aliens, especially superpowered ones? All he had to do was lean back and watch Supergirl destroy her reputation forever and maybe then come up with a Kryptonite gun to kill and be the hero, Instead he's full of remorse and even helps the DEO "cure" Supergirl. Why?

Because he's smart enough to recognize that Non and his army are the greater threat to the world, and that Supergirl is our best hope of stopping them. And maybe after she let him go, he began to realize she's not so bad after all.

Even better was her total breakdown when she normalized again, it was heartbreaking and her heart to heart with Cat was a perfect end to that storyline and the beginning of the redemption (i sincerely hope they will will milk that at the level of this episode.. it would be a shame to see 20 minutes devoted to this in the next episode and everything back to status quo).

That's something I'm looking forward to. Superman: The Animated Series ended with "Legacy," in which Superman was brainwashed by Darkseid and led an invasion of Earth. At the end, Superman had lost humanity's trust and didn't know how he could get it back. We next saw him at the start of Justice League, where the only acknowledgment of that cliffhanger was a single line, "I've worked hard to earn your trust." I always regretted that the cancellation of S:TAS kept us from getting to see that story. Now we finally get to see one like it.

The cape doesn't give her the power to fly.

However, Winn did say in the pilot's costume-design montage that the cape helped stabilize her in flight. But we've seen plenty of Kryptonians flying without capes, so perhaps it's no longer needed now that she's a more experienced flier.

But that's not how it works . . . you just need to assume that Superman is currently defending Metropolis from Mongul or Giganto or somebody and let it go.

Maybe Circe cursed him with the head of a lion and he was too embarrassed to be seen in public. Or maybe he'd been replaced by an evil impostor who trapped him in the Bottle City of Kandor. (Why, yes, I have been reading Showcase Presents Superman Vol. 1, why do you ask? The volume includes the debut story of Supergirl, by the way.)

It reminded me a lot of a more heightened version of Buffy's dance with Xander at the start of season 2.

I laughed so hard at the opening scene with Kara, Winn, and Siobhan.

I thought for sure that upon seeing Supergirl's new outfit, Alex was going to say something like, "You look like Astra."

Also, anyone notice that Red K Supergirl looked a lot of Astra?

For a few seconds there, I actually thought it was Astra. That was really confusing. And then I remembered she was suppoed to be dead.

Again with this? Seriously?

Superman--meaning a full-on appearance is unlikely to happen. The full-on character is for the movies--a separate universe, proven by the forthcoming Flash movie, where the origin, casting and the Justice League movie--have nothing to do with the TV version, which now shares the Supergirl universe.

I'm glad Superman didn't show up. This show is about Supergirl. Early in the season I was worried that this show would get too bogged down with Superman upstaging his cousin. I'm glad he's become an afterthought. For the sake of this series (As in, screw the comics), I'm glad it's Supergirl only and the world in relation to her.

Of course Superman isn't going to show up, and, generally, shouldn't show up, but they're the ones who already established him as being surprisingly close to Kara and kind of protective of her. Trusting her to handle supervillains is fine, but for no one to even suggest calling him when something like this happens to her is stupid.

That said, that's actually my only problem with this episode, and I would say overall this probably is the best of the series so far. At first, I didn't expect it would get anywhere near that. Red Kryptonite had me rolling my eyes the second I saw it. But that ending was incredible and perfectly justified everything that came before it. Assuming the writers really drive this story (with no reset buttons allowed), then this could very well be the big turning point in this show.

I thought for sure that upon seeing Supergirl's new outfit, Alex was going to say something like, "You look like Astra."

I noticed that it wasn't just the outfit -- her eye makeup (and probably makeup and hairstyling in general) was very reminiscent of Astra. No doubt that was the intended subtext, that one of the emotions that was unleashed was Kara's lingering sense of pain at losing her aunt, and her resentment regarding Astra's death. If Kara had been exposed to red K before Astra died, before she'd experienced that grief and pain and anger and inner turmoil, then her "dark side" probably wouldn't have been nearly as intense.

There's probably also some buried anger at Cat regarding the way she's been treated at work lately. And yet that's alongside a clear desire to emulate Cat, judging from Red-K Kara's wardrobe choices.

Was the red K giving her hair red highlights? I'm not sure if I remember that or I'm imagining remembering that.

More about peeing.

1. If there is a substantial amount of wee stored in them, comparable to how much air they store in their lungs, trying to express all of that weewee in one sitting, or standing will over flow the toilet, bathroom and probably the lounge too.

2. The super force at which their piss hits the fragile porcelain bowls, will shatter the porcelain, unless their toilets are custom made from dense ceramics from possibly the hull of their space ships that bought them to earth. If so there is only a limited number of toilets that these two can build before they need to "re-invent" the technology that they're salvaging.

3. Arctic breath is so cold why? Is the gland that stores and prepares solar energy for heat ray vision so close to the lungs, that that gland is a heat sponge, who's effect might also reach as low as their bladders, therefore Kryptonian Urethra's are similar to Captain Cold's freeze gun. Even if the toilet doesn't shatter from intense cold (grapes bathing in liquid nitrogen) frozen wizz is not compatible with Earther toilet technology until it melts.

I didn't think Superman would actually show up but it seemed like a time you'd expect that James would've called him.

It doesn't work dramatically though. Having a scene that plays out as
A:"Call Superman!"
B:"He can't make it because reasons."
adds nothing to the plot, in fact it takes you out of it just to reference something that isn't going to happen.

Besides, it was night, Superman was probably having sexy time with Lois and didn't hear the call. ;)

Henry is losing his hair.

He'll have to were a toupee in the next movie.

They didn't cast young enough to have enough screen time before Kal and Luthor can have a bald off, or they didn't cast old enough to have a proven actor with a resilient hairline who is going to keep his hair.

The long and unlikely game is to use Supergirl to Introduce Henry's replacement in season 7 or 8 to bounce against the next "set" of DC movies, after these current ones have run their path, therefore it seems like Superman Uncast has actually been in the background during the Supergirl TV show all along.

;)

Chiming in late 'cause I just saw it last night.

I must note how easy it was to transform Melissa from "wholesome and Pretty" to "Insanely sexy Knockout". Wow!

She does angry very well. I like watching her do angry. I bet she enjoys doing angry too.

Those jail cells. Glass walls and a small bench. No toilet, no sink, no bunk. WTF?

Kara's confrontation with Alex was heartbreaking. I cried a little then, and I cried a lot when Kara cried in shame upon her recovery. That was wrenching.

Ha, yeah I swear those actresses are two of the best criers I think I've ever seen. I hardly EVER get that teary or emotional while watching most shows or movies, but for some reason when either of those two get going, I find myself getting teary as well. :p

Or maybe I'm just getting soft in my old age or something....

That said, I do not put Kara in the category of some knuckle dragging club lout who might attempt rape. I think the Red K removed the self-imposed barriers regarding her love for James, and while she did aggressively pull him to the dance floor, I would like to think she would never--even under Red K's influence--cross that line.

You're not the only one. That was such a classy production from start to finish--everything a DC adaptation should be.

When she first came out wearing the Kryptonian suit I thought it was Astra too.
EDIT: Purely by coincidence, EP Ali Adler addressed the Superpets issue at last weekend's Supergirl presentation at Paleyfest.
Ali Adler said:
"Comet the Superhorse, Streaky the Supercat -- we love them all," said Adler during PaleyFest. "I think that we just hope to continue with this tremendous cast and make episodes for many years to come. We'll exploit every little thing, I promise. We'll get in there and turn it on its head and try to make something. I mean, we've talked about Streaky. So yeah, definitely we'll embrace all the canon."

Good episode but I hope it's the last of the Red Kryptonite. After all the Smallville Red K episodes I'm a bit burnt out with them.

Well, the thing about Smallville's red K is that it always had the same effect on Clark. But in the comics, red kryptonite is known for affecting Superman differently every time he's exposed to it. And this show is far, far more heavily steeped in comics lore than Smallville ever was. So we may see red K again, but it'll probably do something totally different to Kara.
