A female Doctor, your candidates please!

For a moment I thought that was Evangeline Lily!

I admit, I had to use Google Image Search to be sure myself. :)

There's something about Friel's face -- I almost always mistake her for someone else, like when I thought she was actually Zooey Deschanel in Pushing Daisies.

Allyn Gibson Oh yes Ronan is clearly too young at the moment but boy is she a great actress and I’m not sure it’d even take a decade for her to be ready. Like Matt I think she just nails that old soul in a young body vibe.

She does nail the "old soul in a young body vibe," especially in Byzantium where she's a 200-year-old vampire trapped in a teenager's body.

Unless we're talking a big budget film I think that's never going to happen, and much as I adore Mulligan on multiple levels if we were going for someone of that level of fame my pick would be Saorise Ronin (hopefully spelled that OK!)

How is Carey Mulligan that big? I'm only familiar with her from a few BBC shows. And she was in what recently, Gatsby? One Baz Lurhmann film doesn't a movie star make.

Oscar nominated Carey Mulligan has done various films. This year alone she has headlined Far From the Madding Crowd and Suffragette. Ok she might not be KAte Winslet (yet) but she's a highly regarded film and stage actor who seems very much in demand and is unlikely to want to take on a TV role at this stage of her career, even if it's Who :)

Okay then. I wasn't aware her star had risen that much.

That girl that plays Mary on Downton Abbey. I always liked Mary even from the very beginning, and think she'd be cool.

Yvonne Strahovski would be a fantastic choice.

Also that girl that was in Captain America, Hayley Atwell

Jenna Coleman can't be the Doctor because well she already has a TARDIS of her own and she's "The Clara" So no.....

How about Rebecca Ferguson? I watched her recently in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, and was impressed by her intensity, her physicality, and her character's quintessential Britishness (even though Ferguson is from Sweden). And she just cut a very Doctorish silhouette in trousers and trenchcoat in one scene.

I still wish Paul McGann had drunk from both goblets on Karn, and had turned into a woman and a warrior; they missed a trick not having the forgotten Doctor in The Name of the Doctor turn around to reveal none other than Helen Mirren.

Oooh I like her too. Yes!!!!!

On the one hand, that's a brilliant suggestion. On the other, it would've been a bit of a waste for the first female Doctor to only appear in a one-off.

Can you imagine, though? It would've broke the Internet.

Helen Mirren would have been amazing as any Doctor. She won me over in RED as far as that style of tongue-in-cheek action acting goes.

It would also have meant that the first and so far only female incarnation would have been the one he doesn't talk about - the one who "broke the promise". Maybe not the best PR for the show.

^True, I never even thought of that.

Plus you have the issue of the one who rejected the idea of being a healer, instead being a warrior, being a woman. A role-reversal of the usual gender stereotypes. This would be subjected to all sorts of pretentious analysis all over the Internet and beyond!

And who would give a fig what internet nerds think?
