New Series?? Report from Deadline

I would hope this means at the very least there was a pitch from Kurtzman out there that led them to this, as opposed to CBS telling Kurtzman: "We want a new Trek series for CBS All Access. Come up with something."

Considering Kurrzaman is already an EP for a few semi/and successful shows for CBS, and given his involvement in the ST09, and ID, It wouldn't surprise me that CBS went to Kurtzman and said, make us a new Trek Series.....

Actually, It wouldn't surprise me if this has been a conversation 3-4 years in the making....

Who knows what it's going to be. Really it's just great to be having this conversation. I wonder if it being on all access means that CBS will follow the general streaming model of release an entire season at once.

My guess would be that isn't what will happen because 1) premiering the first episode on CBS makes me think they'll be releasing it episode by episode, and 2) more importantly, I just don't think they have enough time to put an entire season of a show together to have ready to release by next January.

I doubt it because it would let people pay $5.99, watch it all in a month and then cancel. Releasing 1 episode a week means people will have to pay for multiple months depending on the length of the series.

But wouldn't that logic apply to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu and all the other streaming services that do full season dumps of their shows and have from the start?

Sure. But I see CBS as being more traditional. Also, if the show is released at the same time internationally on broadcast they'll want to stay in sync. Lastly, as people have mentioned CBS has less exclusive content beyond this show, so it's more likely people will subscribe and cancel than with Netflix/Amazon/Hulu.

I was concerned about this as well, but then I re-read the announcement and caught this tiny little paragraph:
The next chapter of the “Star Trek” franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.
So, I read this as saying that everyone with a CBS-affiliate channel on their basic cable service should get to see it, albeit probably a little bit later than on the live streaming.

^ You read it wrong.

The only way you're going to be able to access the series on those "multiple platforms" is if you have a subscription to CBS All Access and have the CBS app installed on said platforms.

The series will only be available on television in International markets, not in the U.S.

Concurrently = same time. This means if you're not in the US you'll get the show sold by CBS International to whatever channel buys it in your country. In the US it will be CBS All Access.

Of course eventually it will go to DVD/BD, syndication, and probably other streaming services just like most shows. But don't expect the show to be on CBS a couple months after the digital stream.

*shrugs* Assuming 13 episodes, the series would end its run sometime around April 2017. Might make sense for CBS or CW to air it that summer.

A ways off, but intriguing. They've obviously bought into some concept they think will work.

The starship will probably be visiting a lot of zombie apocalypse planets or medieval-type planets where bloody political and social conflicts are going on.

Maybe the captain is a capo with a "family business" on the side that he keeps track of in his "personal log," and the chief engineer runs a meth lab in the bowels of the ship that supplies colonies all across the alpha quadrant.

While I'm all for legitimately supporting the show so we can get more of it...if you're really desperate to watch it, I'm sure each episode will be up on the torrent sites within about 5 mins of them being made available via the All-Access app. That's how it was when Yahoo picked up the last season of "Community" from NBC.

So who were those people saying there would be no agreement between CBS and Paramount about a new series?? LOL Guess who the producer is!? They're off hiding somewhere in the dark now.

That's how I'll be watching it. I'm not plunking down money for streaming. I pay enough for cable and there is nothing else on the various streaming networks that interests me.

International market here, so the app thing probably not going to be an issue (unless it goes straight to pay-tv or one of the streaming services other than Netflix). That said, surely there would eventually be a legit home-media release? You guys do get the DVD releases of House of Cards and other streaming 'exclusives', right?

I would guess there will be a home media release internationally at some point, but also it will be sold via CBS Studios International to foreign TV markets so you should be fine.

I'll definitely be supporting it by subscribing to the app, unless things get sour and I can't afford it at that time. I don't have cable so I don't foot that bill; I have Netflix, HBO (when Game of Thrones is airing) and I'll have CBS All-Access when Trek airs. Hopefully the PS4 has a CBS app by then; if not, I guess I'm buying an Amazon Fire Stick or whatever.
