Star Trek: Axanar

does seem odd that those that presume the quality will drop for no reason are the same people who claim not to be negative.

Who has said the quality is going to drop? I said I don't know and gave my reasons for my uncertainty.

Reading comprehension is a serious issue in this thread.

People can have good reasons for not just assuming the a movies quality is represented by a trailer. I mean, they have a very well established history of:
-Overselling (Emmerich's Godzilla)
-Underselling (Thor)
-Misrepresenting (August Osage County)
-Spoiling to the point that you don't even feel the need to see the movie (Terminator 5)

But 'not judging a book by its cover', is not the same thing as somone 'assuming the quality will drop' or that those things are definitely the case here. I've read the prerelease snippets of 'The Winds of Winter' and I have no doubt that they wont represent full content the finished novel. Doesn't mean I'm not chomping at the bit for it to hurry up and come out already!

11 freaking years with no freaking resolution for anything... *typical entitled fannish grumbling*

Yep then you have films like Sunshine which crash and burn in the third act....

So, since I've only been a very rare visitor to this site before recently, can I ask -- is it usually a Kindercare of petty bickering and general butthurt around these parts?

Absolutely and long might it continue - remember this is a thread about Axanar not a Axanar fan thread and thus subject to all the usual community norms.

Yeah, and if it was an Axanar "fan thread," the haters and trolls would really be showing their butts.

I'm asking sincerely, because, for obvious reasons, this is how some of the recent exchanges are appearing to this admitted n00b. No offense...
Oh, my brother, you have no idea...

Yes

I stopped posting here for nearly a year on account of this. It was the search for news about Axanar and/or the next Trek movie that drew me back.

It may not have been worth it.:vulcan:

Agreed.

If the Axanar folks are looking for a place that isn't going to be critical of the work, they need to keep on looking because this isn't the place.

If Axanar folks are looking for a place that isn't going to be critical of the work, they need only to go to the Axanar Facebook page, where any critical comments are quickly deleted.

That´s quite an accusation. I have not seen any posts disappear, despite sometimes being negative or critizising things.

It is my understanding/experience that some of the bigger fan film groups - New Voyages, Continues, and Axanar do not tolerate negative or critical comments on their Facebook pages, no matter how minor or well-intentioned.

Screenshots for the win? ;)

I do agree that people here do sometimes go way over the line in critiquing these films. I also happen to recall how some fan filmmakers are quick to lash out when their work was even mildly (and fairly) critiqued. I can't speak to the forums of any specific fanfilm, but I have seen fair critical comments get deleted on YouTube.

Scott and I moderate TheStarshipExeter account on YouTube, and if you look at the comments of TTI you'll see that we rarely comment, and when we do, it's never to tell anyone their opinion is wrong, merely to correct factually incorrect statements (such as the many legends about why the film took so long to complete) or answer questions. The only comments we've ever deleted there are hate-speachy or racist remarks and obvious trolling. Otherwise, if someone doesn't like the show, they're free to say so.

The Axanar FB page for one tends to delete trolling and passive-aggressive shit-stirring, of which as we all know there is plenty, and not even all of that. That's not the same thing as deleting all negative or critical comments, which they most assuredly do NOT do*.

(* At any rate if they were trying to do that, plenty enough fan-standard kvetching and bickering is getting through to make one feel right at home. But the threads there are relatively on-topic and free of the madhouse vibe familiar from, shall we say, less moderated Trek FB group environments, so the results seem to be to the good.)

Jeez, is there a Star Trek group or page on Facebook that hasn't been hit by the Axanar spammers yet? They're worse than that "Save the Clocktower!" lady from BTTF. And what is this, their fourth or fifth fundraiser?

"Hello, sir? Have you heard the Good News? Yes, Admiral Ramirez has been put in charge of the Federation counter-offensive. We're just looking for a small donation to help spring us back into action, back into battle..."

And what is this, their fourth or fifth fundraiser?

I can attest to that. I made a criticism of a fan's piece of STC artwork (I pointed out a word had been spelled incorrectly) and next thing I know I can no longer press any "likes" or make any comments unless I were to share the page and start from there. I tried writing to STC directly and got no response.

I still like and support STC, but whoever is running their FB page has apparently zero tolerance for the slightest negativity.

So far, Alec Peters has run three crowdfunding campaigns entirely dedicated to Axanar:

(1) A Kickstarter campaign for "Prelude to Axanar," which raised $101,171.

(2) A Kickstater campaign for "Axanar," which raised $638,471.

(3) A (currently running) Indiegogo campaign, which is asking for $1.3 million and has to date raised $302,673.

In addition, Peters ran a Kickstarter campaign to help publish Marc Cushman's third These Are The Voyages book, in which he took an undisclosed (as far as I know) percentage for Axanar.

On top of that, they run a donors only web store, which sells model kits and other trinkets (not sure how CBS let's them get away with the unlicensed model kits, to be honest, but I'm not an entertainment lawyer). It's my understanding that they also take direct donations. I don't believe the complete revenue from these sources has ever been disclosed, except for about $20,000 of extra donations included in the income/expenditure statement for "Preude to Axanar," which ultimately cost $123,285. (To be clear, I don't mean to imply that they won't ever disclose this income, just that they have not to date.)

In the interest of full disclosure, Alec Peters ran the May, 2014 Kickstarter campaign for us at Star Trrk New Voyages/Phase II. The campaign collected a gross of $65K.

We had a different team of individuals run our May, 2015 a Kickstarter campaign a couple of months ago. We collected a gross of $50K.

I know BigJake will come running to claim sour grapes, but...

The thing that seems to be bothering me is that they plan on using the money collected to build a studio that will also be used for "for profit" projects. Seems to me that there is an overlap that shouldn't be happening.
