You're least favorite Trek book

My least-favorite Trek novel I've read thus far has to be TNG 24: Nightshade...I thought it was cool by looking at it, and then I'm like "what the deuce?"

Books I haven't liked as much as others include Captain's Peril, The Big Game, The Three-Minute Universe, Ship Of The Line, and Enterprise: The First Adventure

That's why I love these lists - I would have listed The Three-Minute Universe as one of my favourites!

I surprised at the nominations for Orion's Hounds and The Entropy Effect as well. For my money, these are two of the very best out there. And I think that Before Dishonor gets a bit of a bad rap. It's far from PAD's best work, but hardly one of the worst ever.

I actually had to put it down when Captain Picard said to Gul Madred (who you may remember torturing Picard in 'Chain of Command'): "A few years after you tortured me the Borg got their hands on me." because at that point the badness became overwhelming.

A Time for War, a Time for Peace. What a fucking useless anticlimax to an otherwise-great miniseries, with DeCandido indulging his Klingon fetish and his Aaron Sorkin fetish, all in one book. Plus there's, y'know, no plot, aside from Lwaxana Troi interfering with the wedding plans -- an annoying mother-in-law plot that was hoary in 1950s sitcoms. Yeesh.

To be fair I have only just started reading this and it doesn't seem that bad, not the best, but not bad.

I have enjoyed most trek books I've read so I suppose I've been lucky in that respect, but if I had to nominate a book that just doesn't want to click. It would have to be a TNG book called Dyson Sphere by a whole host of people, I cant seem to get past the first chapter.

Multiple authors on one book/story just doesn't fill me with confidence, its like the person whoever came with the idea couldn't be bothered to finish it, but thats just my opinion and I'm sure that there are good books out there with multiple authors (this doesn't include the outstanding SCE series )

I know who it is, but I went with the assumption that he doesn't like everything he's ever written and given the name if the thread its just possible that he thought that this book was his least favorite. I'd be surprised if you can show me a writer, or any artist for that matter, who thinks that everything that have ever done is of equal standard and that they like everything they have ever done.

If my assumption was wrong, I apologise.

I loathe Dyson Sphere. I could not get into that book to save my life and forced myself to read through the whole thing. It is actually the only trek book that I have given away to my second hand bookstore.

While I agree that most probably would not point to something, say "That totally sucks ass" and really mean it, don't think there's no reflection on past deeds going on. I look back in horror at stories I wrote before I was published. I look back at stories published early on and see things I wish I'd done differently, or simply done better. I also look at work done under particular constraints or time limits and know that it could've and should've been better, but was the best it could be given the circumstances. Still, I can see progression as the years have passed.

Oh absolutely. I'm not a writer, but I can relate in my software development, where I might look back at some code that I wrote and think "Why did I do that?" or "Why didn't I do this, this way?" but I don't believe I've ever looked back and saw something worth hard core bashing.

Though I haven't read a ton of them, I'll go with Before Dishonour. Just a ridiculous premise and poor characterization. I didn't really enjoy it, and felt myself constantly being drawn from the story to think about how absurd it was. Not a good thing when Sci-Fi is all about suspension of disbelief.

I also found Engines of Destiny to be very boring, given that I was excited to buy/read it. I'm currently trying to read the 4 part DS9 Gamma series, but it's also very slow. I'm through books 1 and 2, and towards the end of 2 I found myself skipping entire sections because it was just so boring. The characters feel pretty good, but everything is so drawn out. 500 pages for 250 pages worth of material.
