Your opinions on "New Voyages?"

A beaker full of death said:
Jaw-dopping sets and remarkable special effects. The scripts and editing need serious tightening and, despite their obvious love for the original, these guys shoot themselves in the foot by trying to act. "DeSalle" is the only one with any real acting talent.

I think the very obvious problem with NV's acting is that they're all trying to do impersonations rather than act. Isn't it telling that the 'best actor' is the one NOT doing a major character from TOS?

Hell, all the fanfilms I was in were made on Super-8! Nobody's seen them since our projectors all died 20 years ago!

Let's go down my to-do list:

1. Trash New Voyages. :check:

2. Trash TOS-R

3. Trash JJ Abrams movie

4. Trash DS9

5. Trash Star Trek: Legacy

5. Trash anything "non canon"

When I'm done I can cross out the checks, and recycle the list.

:guffaw:

I love the new TrekBBS motto.

...

see, I stayed on topic. ;)

just to continue being a partial curmudgeon, let me recast the question this way: Would Koenig, Takei, Windom etc. have done NV if it wasn't offered online for the general public?

George Takei certainly did a TMP sequel fan film, "Yorktown II", for free for a group of fans way back in the early 80s. It was a favour to them because they'd asked him, but it was never meant to get distribution of any kind. ("Starlog" magazine did publish a pic of George in uniform, and a brief article about it.) The amateur producers got into big trouble with Paramount's lawyers when the film was finished and they started to spread suggestions at conventions that they'd make it available to other fans on videotape, for cash.

See here

and earlier fan film info here.

The LA Star Trek and SF convention community were always making amateur films in the 80s. There was also the infamous "Superbman: The Other Movie", featuring Bjo Trimble and 50s serials "Superman", Kirk Allyn, as Ma and Pa Kant.

Here in Australia, Brian Croucher of "Blake's Seven", played Travis opposite an amateur Servalan in our fanfilm gameshow, "The Nearly Wed Game". Nobody's seen this film beyond our fan group. I still have the eyepatch he wore. ;)

Here's a shameless plug for you John,

My company does 8mm and Super-8 film to DVD transfers. We even do super-8 sound of the magnetic strip variety.

If you're interested, PM me for details.

They wouldn't have heard of NV...

I've tried to enjoy them. I know they're labours of love, by people with a like love for the series and its concepts and origins.

But it's so amateur and so badly executed, for all their effort, it remains unwatchable to me.

That doesn't mean it shouldn't go on. For me it's fanfic to the ultimate level. But for the same reason I don't watch women's sport as a lower-quality option, or go to school plays rather than professional works... I don't watch these, however much and however long I've been a fan of STrek.

It's not top-grade.

I really can't get past the Ed Wood level of bad acting and the ridiculously poofy Elvis hair. The cast is also a little too young. It's like watching a high school theater adaptation.

Starship Exeter on the other hand is near perfect and happens to be my favorite fan film.
