Year of Hell

crouteru

Captain
Captain
I've watched this two-parter again recently, and I find this very confusing:

We learn that Annorax and his crew have been trying to restore the Krenim Imperium for 200 years, and Annorax is waiting for the perfect timeline where his wife is alive, but shouldn't she be long dead anyway? It is 200 years later, all the people they know would be long dead...

There's no mention in the episode that they remain in the same time period, only that they don't age. Clearly we see that time is still moving forward for them outside the weapon ship.

They would have been able to return to their time since the ship was out of temporal phase. Yeah, let's go with that. :)

Maybe Annorax figured that if he ever succeeded then the temporal weapon would never be built, or he'd never have continued mucking about with it, so he'd end his own paradox.

It isn't that confusing. That last scene with Annorax with his wife is suppose to be a flashback and takes place in the past. He still hasn't found out the equations to make his time ship yet, and probably never will now that he chose to spend time with his wife.

I loved YOH. Even though the story made no sense at times, it's great simply for the character drama that we never got in the series.

YOH's only faults are that it's limited to two episodes and has a reset button ending.

Of course, changing the ending would most likely have also involved doing something about the other fault.

OBRIST: If I may speak my thoughts, Many among the crew are convinced that you have lost your objectivity. They think your quest for precision is unrealistic. Sir, we will never restore one hundred percent of what we had. We can manipulate the time continuum for another ten centuries. It will never happen.
ANNORAX: Return to your station and begin a new set of calculations. Is that clear?
OBRIST: Perfectly.
ANNORAX: You surprise me, Obrist, After so many years you still perceive time through conventional eyes. Never is a word that has no meaning here. As long as we stay on this vessel, protected from space-time, we have all eternity to accomplish our mission.
OBRIST: Of course, sir.

He's outside time. Functionally immortal able to change any point in history, "present" and future history and then observe the effects on "all time" including 5 minutes after he last saw his wife no matter how long he stays outside of time.

I guess I just don't have the instinct for time, or whatever it is Captain Nemo calls it. ;)

I suppose it sorta makes sense when looked at in a certain way. I really liked the episode and agree it should have been a much bigger arc of episodes.

How can you exist outside time? Even the bajoran wornhole aliens who have a nonlinear existence are controlled by the forces of time. Nothing can escape time. You can create a different time zone in which you exist but you are still aging as normal in the time no matter how fast or slow it is going in comparison to the time around the time zone bubble you exist in. Apparently only suspended animation can slow or stop time. Perhaps the Krenim live longer than humans and don't age as rapidly. They certainly can't stop time moving along onboard the ship or they'd all be frozen in time and unable to do anything to erase other worlds form existence.

It's a huge flaw in the story. I just ignore it and get on with enjoying the 2 parter that should have been a whole season with no reset button

Easy, if you just do the inverted *technobabble* and bypass the *technobabble* and *techobabble* so you would be able to input the codes 4747 while setting up the *technobabble* and adjust the deflector to do a *technobabble* plot beam.

They're out of phase with the effects of OUR timeline. Given how Annorax's device can erase something from all existence and reshape reality, is it so hard to believe he could also manipulate the lifespans on himself and his crew in their personal "timespace"?

I suppose to answer my original question, I'm wondering if the episode implies that it's always supposed to be the year 2373 for Annorax and his crew. No matter how many centuries they remian on the weapon ship, it will always be 2373 outside. It would have to be that way because how can they know what the future timeline is supposed to be like? If it was 200 years later from their launch date, their entire culture would look alien to them.

Doc: It's cold, damn cold. Ha, ha, ha, Einstein, you little devil.
Einstein's clock is exactly one

minute behind mine, it's still ticking.

Marty: He's alright.

Doc: He's fine, and he's completely unaware that anything happened. As
far as he's concerned

the trip was instantaneous. That's why Einstein's watch is exactly one
minute behind mine. He

skipped over that minute to instantly arrive at this moment in time.
Come here, I'll show you
Imagine if instead of continuing into the future, that Einstein stopped mid skip between the present and the future present and built a space station.

Time is just a universal constant of this dimension which does not apply the same to other universes and other dimensions so therefore there must be neutral barrier membranes separating the different universes and dimensions which some smart bastards might figure out how to navigate through someday.

Boom, headshot.

Annorax made a time-machine that could judge future vectors on the fly. The ship itself was adaptable because for 200 years it imposed future vectors many times that snapped back on the ship and folded and closed on itself. This made a probability that got to him. It had to be exact and couldn't return to 00.00 so he could see his wife.

Since Annorax and his crew had been on their mission for 200 years, the universe outside their ship should be 2373. But since they exist in some kind of temporal flux, it's still 2173 to them.

But there is something else that I don't understand: They had been manipulating the timeline for 200 years, then Voyager pushes the big reset button ... and in the end everything is how we remember it (except for Before And After of course) ... how is that possible? Everything Voyager had encountered until now was supposed to be a result of the timeline incursions, right? Now that the timeline has been reset to how it was supposed to evolve for the past 200 years, it should be radically different!

By extreme coincidence, the untampered timeline just happened to resemble the one seen in all episodes before Year of Hell. ;)

Except for the overlap with Before and After.

It would have been so cool if they just threw in some old crew who had died or completely new crew we had never had before...

They could have brought back Stadi.

Stuck her right between Tom and B'Elanna.

Sparks.

Isn't that what Annorax was trying to explain when he said for time past, present & future all breathe as one? So I figured he was saying that he could manipulate linear time to have no meaning. Due to that, time was punishing him by not giving him what he wanted due to messing with it.
