Kes Returns - what episode would you have made?

Admiral Jean-Luc Picard

I know "Fury" is a very sour topic for Lynx and other Voyager fans, so I thought we could have some FUN and take our own shots at a "Kes returns" episode. To guide the conversation, just one rule: it has to be a single episode or two-parter. Beyond that, do whatever you want with your Kes returns episode.

I'd do the "Kes returns" episode in S6 like we got, but I'd scrap "Ashes to Ashes" episode to make a two-parter. The zombie-like episode always weirded me out. Anyway, with "Fury" as a two-parter, I'd mostly keep the same plot, but I'd expand on the story, do different things, and give it a different ending.

Fury, Part 1
#1 The episode opens up with Tuvok's birthday and Ke's return in the same way.
#2 I'd have Kes kill multiple people on her rampage, not just B'Elanna. Maybe Seven too!
#3 I'd keep the warp core for time travel point and Kes morphing to look young.
#4 Most of "Fury" happens more or less the same way in the past.
#5 The big cliffhanger is that future-Kes kills Captain Janeway and Chakotay fails to free Voyager from the Vadiians.
#6 I'd swap out the rushed ending for a dark cliffhanger - Kes succeeded, the Vadiians succeeded, Voyager falls.

Fury, Part 2
#1 The Vadiians invade the ship, and crew members are being killed and taken for spare parts left and right.
#2 Some of the crew manage to abandon ship via escape pods. The two Kesses plus Neelix escape in a shuttlecraft.
#3 Chakotay fails to activate the self destruct. The bridge seals off from the ship, Harry's corridor seals closed, and the bridge launches out as an escape pod, piloting away from Voyager and leading the escape pods to safety. Launched shuttlecraft follow the escape pods, providing cover fire.
#4 The Vadiians decide they're more interested in taking Voyager as a prize and aim to use the ship to aide them in their organ snatcher activities.
#5 Seska defects to the Vadiians, proposing an alliance between them and the Kazon, using Voyager as their war hammer.
#6 One by one, Voyage's escape pods are picked off by the Kazon and the Vadiians.
#7 Meanwhile, back with fuure Kes, her younger self, and Neelix.. after spending the entire journey talking about reckless the Voyager crew had been, it's just not their problem. His new focus is on what to do when they return to Ocampa to fend off the surface dwelling Kazon.
#8 The shuttle makes it back to Ocampa only to find Voyager crewed by Vadiians, Kazon, Seska, Lon Suitor, and the Doctor (this is pre-mobile emitter days).
#9 Voyager aims to destroy the shuttle just to make sure old-Kes doesn't get an ideas to screw around with time again.
#10 Neelix kills old Kes, hails Voyager, and showing old Kes, dead. He asks for safe passage for him and young Kes to leave and just be left alone.
#11 Neelix and Kes depart in their shuttle. What now?
#12 Years later, Species 8472 have defeated the Borg, and they have begun a war on the entire galaxy - your galaxy WILL be perged.
#13 Elderly Kes and Neelix in their wrecked Voyager shuttle have been on the run for years. Kes's telepathic encounters have been taking their toll on Kes over the years. She has a plan, and she needs Neelix's help. They set course for a Species 8472 ship as Kes makes contact, knowing said contact accelerates her powers. She begins to glow as Neelix starts firing on the shuttle to provoke the ship, dodging weapons fire, and Kes begins to glow brighter. Neelix sets the warp core to overload and sets a collision course to the Species 8472 weapons ship. As the enemy ship readies fire, Neelix turns around toward Kes, "I'll see you soon, sweeite." The aliens ship discharges weapons, and the shuttle explodes.
#14 The Vadiians are attacking Voyager, an unknown force rips Voyager free from the Vadiians, Chakotay cripples their ship - photon torpedoes.
#15 In the cargo bay, old Kes is about to kill Janeway, but a second older Kes appears. The two elderly Kes battle it out, trashing the cargo bay, fatally wounding each other. Janeway crawls across the floor toward the third Kes to figure out WTF is going on. All the 2nd older Kes can say is... one day, she will leave, and when she comes back, keep her from the warp core at all costs - it will be the death of the crew, and open the door to the fall of the entire galaxy, the fate of everyone is on Janeway now. Kes dies.
#16 Back in the present day, old Kes returns for her rampage. The scene in engineering with old Kes plays out like in single-episode "Fury," but this time, she's confronted by Janeway, Tuvok, the Doctor, Neelix, and hologram Kes. Whatever happened to her over the past three years, whatever her anger is, changing the past will only end in death. Tuvok offers to risk his own wellbeing to mild meld with Kes to offer her peace and calm. We learn what happened to Kes over the past 3 years and why it basically corrupted her. We learn Kes plans to see Susperia on her way back to Ocampa - it's time to go home.
#17 Voyager gives Kes a second shuttle, packed with supplies. Neelix greets her in the shuttle for one last goodbye.
#18 The episode ends with Kes's shuttle warping back toward Ocampa. Fade to black.

OK, maybe this should be a trilogy.

OK, if my attempt at Fury is shitty, don't be mean, just hack away.

None. She was a poorly thought out character, to begin with.
Definitely not.
She's a great character who really represent the spirit of Star Trek.
To learn and explore.

Unfortunatel I must state that trying to go through this script was impossible. I gave up after a third of it.

This episode and everything with it, re-made or not makes me wanna puke on the keyboard and I do find that unnecessary and destructive.

The best "Kes returns" story is Coming Home which can be found at the Kes Website.
The best Voyager episode never made! :techman:

Definitely not.
She's a great character who really represent the spirit of Star Trek.
She was easily the least interesting main character from ANY Trek series.

Travis Mayweather was a better character.

Wesley Crusher was a more interesting character.

The Bridge crew from Discovery were better characters.

Most episodes where she was the central character could have been used as sleeping aids.

Nixing her for Seven of Nine was the smartest thing Voyager ever did.

Least interesting?
I can understand many complaints on Kes, even if not agree with them. But not interesting, I cannot.
As Lynx says, she emobies what Star Trek is all about. But she also has Force - like powers that are curious all in themselves. And she is also easy to befriend, which is nice in itself.
For me, Kes is a character from Star Trek, that shows what Star Trek is all about...that would be also a good Star Wars charatcer. If that's mnot interesting, I don;t know what is.
And, no matter how bad Fury is, at least it supports this. Because Kes there is behaving a lot like some Dark Side users in Star Wars. Her ramblings about being abandoned do sound a lot like Anakin's ramblings to Obi - Wan on Mustafar in Episode III.

Maybe Kes would be better off in star Wars. Only Star Wars already has a charatcer that, in my opinuion, is a lot like Kes... Ahsoka Tano, I think.

What is "Coming Home?"

I must say, perception of Kes turned for the worse over the years. I recenlky read some old Voyager fanfiction, mailny from Seven/Kim achives and some from Torres/Kim. And I found out that people were much more respectful for Kes and much less complaining about her. Even more than canon writers in that Season 6 episode. Kes was often mentioned in these wroks, even appeared a few imes, and always wil respect, always using depiction fropm season 1 - 3. And it was often in Harry/Seven fics. I mean, this pairing would never be somethink else than an absolutely mrginal peiring of people that never met if Kes stayed in thye show - one way or the other - and yet writers of this pariing didnlt dislike Kes... Or at least it didnlt shown.

Move "Shattered" up. Have Kes show up in one of the past timelines.

Don't do anything else.

Honestly, there's like 10 episodes that she could have popped up in via flashback or time travel.
There are lots of TV shows where ex-regulars come back for special guest appearances.
On the shows where this didn't happen, it's either the actors didn't want to come back, was too busy, or there was something going on behind the scenes.

Hm...I wish Kes would have returned more human and not as a supernatural destructive super creature.

:barf:

Your comment is complete BS.

Comparing her with Maywater, who was as interesting as yesterdays leftover and the worthless crew of the horrible Discovery is actually insulting.

I have more respect for Wesley Crusher who was an OK character but Kes was far better than both Wesley and Troi. As for Troi, she was OK except for her ability to get in relationships with slimy people like Devinion Ral and Ambassador Alkar. kes never did anything like that.

Sleeping aids? Well, obviously you haven't watched episodes like Cold Fire, Persistence Of Vision and Warlord. Excellent episodes!

As for Seven, she was there to attract teenage boys to watch the series and to fulfill Braga's wet dreams about women in catsuits.

I agree on most of your comments. But that episode in season 6 was nothing but an insulting piece of crap.

As for Kes, she should have been traded to DS9. That would have been perfect for the character.

Yes. Stories where a sweet and somewhat naive character goes of on an adventure only to discover that they possess a magical, potentially dangerous power within them aren't exactly new to science fiction or fantasy.

So what? If the character is good and there are good stories, I see no problem.

Plus, the whole relationship was creepy as hell. She's basically a child, and he..... was not.
Oh, that ridiculous age-obsession again.

Kes was basically about 19 years old and Neelix about 30. So what?
There are a lot of such relationships in the world of celebrities and not only there.

|I guess you find other things than myself interesting. I certinely think Kes is unique.
Some people prefer action-women in catsuits and empty stories with explosions, explosions and explosions.
I prefer good looking women with brains in interesting stories.
And yes, Kes is unique.

I tried, and you tried.
I often try, but sometimes it doesn't work, like with Discovery, Picard and Stargate Universe.
And definitely not with anything which has something to do with a certain episode.

Oh, don't let that be my fault.
No problem, it has happened before and I managed to avoid it this time too.

What is "Coming Home?"
Since I've got some criticizm for promoting my own work, you have to search for the answers yourself. There are hints in this thread. ;)

Thanks! :techman:

Hm...I wish Kes would have returned more human and not as a supernatural destructive super creature.
Exactly my opinion too.

But she's not human, she's Ocampan, and given her character arc, wouldn't that be walking it backwards?
I'd rather walk backwards if necessary than stumble like a drunk to destruction.

As for Kes, she should have been traded to DS9. That would have been perfect for the character.

Really. The DS9 writers knew what to do with distinctive characters like Kes. I think they could have done wonders with other under-evolved VOY characters, too.

Oh, that ridiculous age-obsession again.

For some of us, it's the proverbial Yridian mammoth in the room.

I know that Neelix, Tom, and Harry were honorable men and would not have exploited anyone. And also that Kes had only 9 years, so she would die at half the legal age for humans. But still, when we think of two-year-olds, we think of tricycles and teddy bears.

Since I've got some criticizm for promoting my own work, you have to search for the answers yourself. There are hints in this thread. ;)

If there was not a link already, I would provide one.
