WoW - Musings & Discussion

I'm pretty much done with WoW for now. I've retired from 25 man raiding this expansion, and with the changes to raiding in Cataclysm, I'll be done with it for good. I much prefer 10 man raiding. It's much easier to get 10 people who are on the same goals, schedules, and ability than it is with 25 mans unless you're one of the better guilds on the server. Plus, it'll mean I can cut back a ton on play time with not having to raid multiple lockouts, which I felt was a must for a lot of this expansion.

Right now, I'm showing up to our Sunday 10 man and that's about it. Once we kill the Lich King, I'll be done with raiding this expansion altogether. I might play occasionally to pvp with my priest or something. They're a ton of fun.

I thought that Cataclysm was making it more rewarding to raid 10-mans. What changes would inspire you to give up the game for good based on 10-mans? Did I miss something?

Sorry, that was poor wording on my part. I meant that I'll be done with 25 man raiding in Cataclysm. It'll be all 10 man raiding for me once the expansion comes out.

First post here on this board - MMO Champion has a number of screenshots from the revamped zones in Azeroth, and I have to say, they look amazing!

I play on Misha and have a Lvl 80 Rogue and Lvl 80 DK.

If you've played for any extended period of time you'll notice a lot of new changes to the zones. This being an alpha build as well you'll probably see a lot more significant and obvious changes as we go into beta.

More of the same as in nothing truly new. Same level of graphics that were already outdated when the game was released and absolutely no improvements to the actual gamplay as opposed to building in the tedium and repetitiveness of the end-game. They're not even trying to disguise it anymore (with the whole badge-to-points things that automatically degrade each tier release), and people are eating it up.

Hence "more of the same."

The graphics are necessarily outdated compared to others because they want to grab a larger subscription base. Setting the graphic minimum too high means losing more people who literally cannot play because their computers aren't new enough.

The gameplay is hard to revolutionize and balance around the large number of variables in play, and besides which they can't just change things. Whenever they do the opposite end of the fanbase whines they're changing everything and protest that. So Blizzard has gone to the middle ground, changing some things but they are gradual and slow. If you think it more of the same then you're not going to like it no matter what they do short of scrapping it and starting 100% fresh.

I personally think WoW graphics are awesome, I grew up on stuff like Super Nintendo. The animations are amazingly detailed.

It's really the gameplay that drives these type of games anyway and I like Blizzard's particular style in that area.

As for the graphics not being update...well...just look at the screens of the water.

That's the way to update graphics: small, incremental updates as technology moves on, not sweeping, buggy overhauls to the engine.

i think the graphics work for what they are trying to do. most PC games from 5 years ago have not aged well. WoWs, i think have aged very well.

WoW looks great as a game despite primitive graphics because 1) the art design is phenomenal and 2) it's not meant to be realistic, it's more cartoonish, so they can get away with it

I want another something like the Scourge Invasion to precede the release of Cataclysm. I know some people hated it, but I thought it was the most fun thing that ever happened in WoW. We could have Leper Gnomes and Voodoo Zombie Darkspears roaming the cities infecting people. :)

i think that is just part of the launch stuff, not the full launch barrage.

also, it's up for testing on the PTR now.
