WoW - Musings & Discussion

I've reached the end of the line when it comes to WoW, I think. I don't have the interest or time to join a raiding guild and I'm waaay sick of 2 frosts per day (volley...volley...volley...volley...) + 5 frosts per week (and our server sucks, so it's nearly always Noth or Patch, who have essentially become training dummies that die in 3 minutes) so I'm pretty much topped out gear-wise. I've never been all that interested in my alts, and I've even slowed down on wasting time getting achievements. You can only fish so many times and solo so many BC dungeons before you get burned out, it seems :p. So when my card is up at the end of the month, I'll be out for a while. But of course, all the Cataclysm news coming out sounds awesome...they'll be sucking me back in whenever that comes out.

You know, if you're on a larger server you can get by perfectly fine without being in a raiding guild. My cousin is still on Blackrock and you can pug just about anything at just about any hour of the day, and probably be more successful at it than a lot of mediocre guilds on smaller servers. As an example, on my server only a couple of guilds have downed LK in 25 man, and none have done it on heroic. My cousin does nothing but pug and he's 4/12 heroic 25 man ICC. Huge talent pool is all.

^^Yeah, my friends and I are definitely switching servers when Cataclysm hits. We're on low pop server now and outnumbered by the horde something like 4 to 1...trade can be nearly dead sometimes, which just doesn't seem right.

I read through the rogue changes. It left me wondering which spec will be the best for doing heroics and raiding. Assassination will be all about burst damage, which isn't as important in raiding. Combat will be all about survivability against other melee, which again isn't important in raiding. Autoattacks and poison will be dialed back to allow more damage to come from special attacks, which I think is a good thing. At the moment, 75% of my total raid damage is from autoattacks and poisons. Dialing those back will make the special attacks rotation more important. Not sure how useful the new ninja smoke cloud is gonna be.

Mana adept is going to make arcane the least used spec for mages. Who wants to be penalized on damage for being OOM?

I'm waiting until I down LK before I take a break. I needs to down him.
Same here.

Having been a long time fan of the Warcraftverse and its lore, killing Arthas was one of my main reasons for buying this game in the first place, back in 2006.
He is the last loose end from WCIII TFT. I can't quit until I've tied that up and granted my Forsaken rogue her revenge.

Combat will also have the most amount of sustained dps, which is very important in PvE.
I love Smoke Bomb aka the Zergs Dark Swarm.

Huge changes for raiding in Cata. Not sure I like it, a lot of medium sized guilds like mine are up shit creek. One raid lockout in total for 10 and 25 and heroic versions, the same loot and difficulty for both 10 and 25 man versions. Really Blizz?

Ranked BGs are awesome, no personal rating required for the highest end PvP gear (less awesome). Convert PvP tokens into PvE tokens to buy gear? A cap on the number of tokens per week so you might end up in a raid not collecting anymore because you earned too many other ways? Wierd.

These changes are more palatable.

It feels like Blizzard want players to be able to do anything they want and end up with the same results. I'm usually the last person to be a pessimist or an "elitist", but a lot of these changes make me not want to raid anymore and stick to PvP. I'm a guild leader, and I've already had a dozen people (including two officers) tell me they are probably going to not just quit the guild but leave the server altogether for a better battle group, because it will be so easy to put together a ten man group for PvE and they will probably spend more time PvPing now anyway. Thanks for putting an expiration date on the guild I worked two years to build up Blizzard. :(

The 10/25 man raid sounds bad on the surface until you start to look deeper. I'm perpetually stuck doing 10 mans but by limitation of numbers, not skill. My guild has enough people to do a 25 man, even two or three (counting alts, twice that or more) but we have people who can't be on all at the same time and at best we can squeeze two 10 mans out in a night, even though it might end up shorting us one or two on a team.

Adding more people is out of the question. We're not progression raiders who min/max or give special preference. We're not casual but we're not hardcore and too many people fall into one catagory or another. And we've had too many problems with gear whores who get their gear, leave and go to a progression guild, basically using us to bypass what would otherwise require them to put more effort in a hardcore guild.

With 25 mans, you still get the same loot, yes, but it's more of it, and more odds to get it (with 25 people, you'll also be able to represent every class as opposed to 10 mans where you're lucky to get less than two of the same class) and 25 man means less likely to get worthless loot.

Ever do a 10 man and have Shaman gear drop and no Shamans in the raid? Sucks when that happens. It'll still happen in Cata too but at least 25 mans won't be getting the short end of the stick some people think. It also takes away some of the eltism that people in 25 man are somehow better or more skilled. 10 man is arguably harder because you have less room to carry anyone not pulling their weight.

An excellent example of this is a VOA pug I was in yesterday. 25 man run, a warlock literally did nothing on trash and only a token amount of damage on the bosses (1.2k on Toravon, and he had t9/TOC level gear). Try that in a 10 man and it would fall apart. No room for carrying.

I do like the PVP changes though. It gives a more even starting ground to those who are just starting out in PVP and does not give special preference to those who are years ahead of their opponents. It gives people new to it a chance to learn and get better gear. Gear doesn't equal skill so they won't be able to just get the best gear or win better matches merely for being on the same level of gear whereas someone who is very skilled and in the best PVP gear avaliable will literally crush anyone with lesser gear, regardless of skill.

PVP stuff looks great. I can't wait for rated battlegrounds! I spend half my time in them anyways.

As far as raids go, I'm not a raider so I don't really care, but if it were up to me, the 10-man would basically be on the level of a Heroic 5-man, giving you the same rewards, tuned to the same difficulty, much easier and essentially there to see the content as an alternative to heroics, with 25 man being the "real raid".

I like the changes. I have been a big fan of 10 mans since BC. In 10s, I am usually in a group of friends whom I like to hang out with and whom we know how each other plays well. I don't get that same feeling in 25s because even though it includes the people from my 10, most of the people are ones I do not interact with.

These changes make me want to come back ... moreso.

I haven't played since November. I quit to finish my novel. I've been hesitant to get started again because I don't want to get roped into a regular raiding schedule. Now, this change will mean I really can get the best gear by pugging or by just doing PvP. I kinda like it.

... must resist urge ... to Warcraft!

I've seriously been having this big internal debate about whether or not to play again. On the one hand, I'm not really doing anything else important now that my novel is done (well, except prepping my website, but it's almost ready). On the other hand, when I did play I used to play way too much, like 20-30 hours a week. Decisions, decisions.

Fuck me... I take one night from my ICC group that has been working on the LK for the past few weeks and they down him.

Warcraft... I can't quit you.

I haven't played in a year now, but for me, the feeling of wanting to go back has never gone away completely. I'll have a boring Sunday afternoon and think "Well, why not play some WoW?"

I quit for about a year before Burning Crusade came out too. The expansions always have a way of pulling me back in, we'll see if Cataclysm has the same alluring effect on me Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King did in the past.
