Worst TNG Episode Ever?

It's not that they are all black that is the problem; it's that they were all black portraying extremely offensive stereotypes. On top of that was a very mediocre script and some horrible acting.

Far worse than mediocre. Out right bad. But racial stereotypes? They liked fighting and wore turbans or something. They weren't awfully personable or reasonable. A bit too obsessive about traditions and protocol. Those are all the qualities I remember, none seem tied to race.

Primitive violent 'tribal' black men with thick accents and big sexual appetites out to ensnare white women? It was a stereotype so dated even when it was made that it barely even seems like a stereotype now. The"noble savage" was recognised as a racist trope in the 80s yet TNG decided to go with it.

Primitive? Not especially. Their tech isn't. Violent? So are half the planets they meet. Thick accents? That's just being foreign.
Tribal? Is that so bad?

"big sexual appetites out to ensnare white women?" Well they're on thin ice there. Maybe that one.

'The"noble savage" was recognised as a racist trope in the 80s' ... passive voice. This sounds as if it came from some political discussion I did not attend... I like noble savage characters. Leela from Dr Who, for one.

I can see this setting off one's racism radar, it all feels strange, questionable, but your own vague justifications show it's not at all definite.

Regarding The Inner Light: There's a lot in this episode that requires even more suspension of disbelief than usual, but it's still an extremely powerful and touching episode due mostly to the last five miniutes, when you realize how deeply the experience has affected Picard. It's made even more powerful by the later episode 'Lessons', which is the only one where we get to see an aftermath of this episode affecting him later, to say nothing of the fact that it gives them a reason to recycle the EXCELLENT muscial piece from The Inner Light, which as a music lover was the high point of the episode AFAIC.

As for the worst episode, it's the one where the crew is turning into spiders and the ship is evolving into some weird Mayan temple or some shit. Can't even remember the name but it was toward the end of the series.

Those are two different (and equally terrible) episodes that you're combining. The spiders thing is Genesis, the Mayan stuff is Masks.

Oops. Okay, if I can only pick one, then I'd put the one where the ship turns into a temple at the bottom with the other one a single notch above it. I remember seeing those and thinking that TNG had finally run its course.

The Last Outpost was so godawfully cringy. I can't believe they actually made that.

Surprising thing is, this was suppose to give us Next Generation's villains that would've rivaled the Romulans and Klingon's from the Original Series.

But I still say that it's a tie between Data's Day & In Theory for absolute unwatchable episodes.

OH Data's Day, isn't that the one with his robot daughter that he makes?
Data's Day is the one where the O'Briens get married, and Keiko wants to walk. I"ll agree it was a bit lame, but it's not bad. Rascals is the one where the entire writing staff must have been asleep at the wheel....
In Theory I thought was an enjoyable fluff, although the ending was poignant.
The one with Datas daughter is The Offpsring.

I've been working my way back through the show on blu-ray, and have been enjoying a lot of the episodes in season 1 more than I ever have before. That said, Symbiosis has been my least favorite so far. Just such a heavy-handed episode, even by TNG standards.

OK then one vote for The Offspring because that bored me shitless

I don't know about worst, but it just seemed so goofy to me. It's like the episode wanted to be this great statement about life and family and children and it all was just so trite. Hey, I built a kid, oops she died, well, I downloaded her, ride off into the sunset and barely mention it again, the end.

I wonder if when Data did his mind sharing with B-4 if he included Lal in that.
