Windows 10....one year later....disscussion, thoughts.

Some updates do increase the size of the Windows 10 installation, but aside from that, when one downloads an update that can be anywhere from 1 to 12 GB in size, it can put the squeeze on hard drives which are already feeling the pressure. Remember that while the program is installing, it needs a significant chunk of HDD space in which to use as a swap. @Random_Spock is likely worried that one of these installs or updates will hit the hard limit on his HDD.

Exactly. Not a lot of real estate. I'll be backing up to my external hard drive, and moving what I can to Photobucket, but space will probably still be somewhat of an issue.

Like I said, I'm running on a tiny 55gb SSD for the OS and haven't had any problems with space from updates whatsoever. Basically, your issue is not Windows 10.

That's good. My laptop is running ok right now. Just a bit concerned about space in general.

If you have another, larger, drive then Windows will simply dump files onto that instead of the boot drive, Windows 8.xx does the same, if you however have only one drive in your machine and its nearly full then you will have a problem.

How big is your drive right now (Sorry if you stated this somewhere else)? If you're looking for more storage, Newegg has a nice little sale running. You can get a 1 TB internal laptop HDD for about $40 right now. I realize not everyone has that kind of money (like myself), but if you can afford it, prices are great at the moment.

No one has said Windows 10 is the sole problem, but it is contributing to the problem.

Indeed. Standard HDDs are dirt cheap right now. If one doesn't absolutely need the most superfast hard disk in the world, a good high capacity HDD will run you less than $50.

Not sure how you're getting 12GB downloads. The insider builds are pretty much the size of an the Windows 10 iso image. when I do a disk clean up after an insider build has gone through it shows the install files as around 3.7GB.

Maybe you're getting confused with the backup it takes of your previous windows install so you can roll back within 30 days. On my system with running Windows 10 Pro that comes in around 17GB (I free up about 21GB by the time everything is cleaned up).

Well, 12 GB is an example of the high end of the size spectrum. Short of someone doing a fresh install, I doubt it would get that high in any normal case.

If you run a disk cleanup that can get rid of a lot of deadweight and free up space, even remove old system installs

750GB (680GB free originally) Down to around 251GB right now.

That's a good deal. Wish I could too. I'd snap it up.

Ah, good, you still have a lot of wiggle room. I had a 500GB HDD with my old system, and 436 GB were in use. I was feeling the squeeze on that one.

Avast does it to me. Says I have 5gb of junk on my drive. No Avast, I'll decide what's junk on my drive. Not you.
Oh, yeah, that reminds me. I did the dumbest thing ever (wholly by accident), I ran the MalwareBytes Junk Removal Tool on my system the other day, as I was hoping to get rid of some bloatware that came with my HP Windows 10 installation, you know, in case I missed something. Well, without even asking me what I considered junk, it proceeded to just hack right away at everything, and removed about 30 programs that I used all of the time that were most assuredly not junk, and it wiped out their settings, too! I had to use a system restore because of it, and I vowed never to run the program ever again.

Damn thing kept me busy for two hours after that, restoring everything. Yeesh!

Dang that's insane! I hate when programs do that. Isn't there a way to have it only remove what you want it to remove?

Not that I am aware of, it just removes what it considers junk. Normally that's the bloatware on a new PC, but in this case it went crazy and started tearing into all my other programs. MalwareBytes makes some terrific software, but this one misses the mark, I think.

Ah well that's not good. Is there a way for you to report it to them so they can try to work out bugs?

I did. They told me it should be run on brand new PCs where the user hasn't really added anything yet. They probably say this somewhere on the site and I missed it, but I'll be mindful of it in the future.
