William Windom R.I.P....

How many times did he make appearances at Star Trek conventions?

Not very many, to the best of my knowledge. We never had him as a guest at Polaris, and I don't recall his name coming up when we were discussing potential guests among actors who were doing the convention circuit. (Though I can't recall the last time we had any TOS guest... it might have been George Takei, as part of our 20th anniversary celebration 6 years ago. We brought back five previous actor guests who were particularly popular for that year, among the ten we had in total.)

Definitely one of the most memorable guest stars and characters in all of Trek.

RIP Mr. Windom. I enjoyed everything I saw him in and he never seemed to "phone in" any of the characters he played, from the Twilght Zone to Classic Trek's Doomsday Machine. I remember seeing him all over the TV in the 1980's. I hope I live as long.

MeTV is honoring Windom this week. I turned on the TV and there was Mr. Windom in The Twilight Zone's "Five Characters In Search of An Exit".

Thank you for enriching our lives. RIP, Mr. Windom.

Part II of it is still available on YouTube. It's funny to hear his lines. His delivery in some spots sounds a lot like his performance as Matt Decker. ;)

One of the best exchanges of dialogue in any Star Trek:

Kirk: Matt, where's your crew?
Decker: On the third planet.
Kirk: There is no third planet.
Decker [sobbing]: Don't you think I know that? There was, but not anymore!

The way he said "There was, but not anymore" was almost sarcastic and flippant -- which would normally be strange, considering the scene. However, oddly enough, that near-flippancy worked...and worked very well.

Looks like MeTV has rescheduled this week's Star Trek-R to be "The Doomsday Machine" (it was going to be "Return to Tomorrow").
