Will We See Guinan

I'm just wondering if the show is going to have anything original to present when all is said and done. I understand wanting to spend a season getting one's feet wet, but to keep going back to the well is going to get tedious, just like it has on Discovery.
If they follow Discovery's lead they might troll familiar coastline before going into deep water in the 3rd season.

There's this weird subsection of fandom that expects STP to feature ONLY JLP and never acknowledge any of the time he spent with the other characters the fanbase knows at any time for any reason.

There's a balance to be had. Right now we have Data, Riker, Troi, Hugh, Seven, potentially Bruce Maddox, with the rumors having the Doctor and Guinan in season two.

It is funny that the animated show is seemingly going to be the only one aiming for originality.

I wonder if they'll try and de-age her through CGI, or come up with some rando explanation why someone from a species which doesn't age a day for centuries ages suddenly over the course of two decades.

I suppose they could just explain that El-Aurians go through a period of rapid aging immediately prior to their terminal decline? Though this would conflict with both her parents being alive and healthy while TNG was on.
Well, they certainly can come up with a variety of scenarios. Heck, they could even explain her absence in First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis AND her age by having her get stuck on Earth in the past during the Borg Incursion and having to live in a secluded area to "stay out of history's way." She then reveals herself to Picard for whatever story reason fits into S2.

Besides, aside from a little additional weight and her grey dreds, she really doesn't look that much different.

They can always hide the dreds under a hat. :)

There is a difference between not acknowledging, and demanding that all characters from his past show up in some way.

Its been 20 years. People are allowed to move on. In fact, I believe it is healthy to do so.

I still know people from each different period of my life. I don't interact with 90% of the people I knew from before the current period, but the 10% I still know, I still keep in touch with, I still visit, I still hang out with. Moving on does not mean cutting every single person out.

The truth is in the middle. It's not all one or all the other. Some people here are too obsessed with not seeing anyone regardless of circumstances. It's blind, indiscriminate reasoning. Michael Chabon has gone out of his way to say several times that he won't include characters unless there was a story reason.

And anyway, I knew this was how some would react. So I'm not surprised.

I'm looking forward to seeing Guinan. I hope they show more of her friendship with Picard instead of just telling us.

This is absolutely not true. The showrunner of Lower Decks said that they plan to have guest stars from Berman-era Trek as much as is feasible without looking ridiculous.

Honestly, it makes a lot of sense now why they set Lower Decks only a year post-Nemesis. It means they can have more of a lighthearted "pre 9/11" vibe, and Berman Trek actors can reprise their un-aged characters in voice form.

Again, not saying cutting everyone out. But, in terms of story, there is not a need to highlight every single person Picard once knew.

As @BillJ noted there is a balance to be struck. References are fine if they are in service to the story. It's not black or white but a place to practice restraint in storytelling.

You and BillJ need to re-read what the rest of us have been saying.

Oh, please.
You're making sense. Not everyone else is. The post I responded to was a black or white, all or nothing, proposal, which I completely objected to. If Chabon takes the approach you says he does then I will have little, possibly a little, issue.

I feel like there is a bit of an overreaction here.

like 90% of the trailers are focusing on original characters. (not counting Picard) the new characters get most of the screen time.

If it has to be all original characters, then maybe it's best not to watch a show centered around an extremely familiar character.

I'm not into cameos galore, but if it makes sense to the story, throw in some from time to time. Or, as I've said, have them all run into each other randomly in a turbolift for 1 scene and get it over with.

I guess I'm confused as to why you expect Picard not to want to see old friends he served with for decades? Or seek them out when he needs his friends the most. You also keep referencing fan service which is something neither DSC has done or Picard will do according to the producers who have specifically said they won't do that unless a character they bring in contributes to the plot. Just as Spock, Sarek and Pike did in DSC. Just as it appears Riker, Troi and memories of Data will do in S1. The vast majority of characters in both shows are all new.

Denise Crosby has said they have approached her about reprising Sela in Season 2 aswell.

Exactly.

Ok, I love DSC but it has definitely gone to the fan service well. The most obvious one being the reuse of "The Cage" footage to set up an episode. I think Michael Burnham is highly enjoyable as a character but her connection to Spock is fan service.

It remains to be seen how the characters from TNG get worked in. I'm hesitant but that's because I didn't enjoy TNG so the idea of these characters coming back doesn't bring with it the same emotion as it does for others. But, as @NewHeavensNewEarth and @Lord Garth and others have noted if they are in service to the story and don't take away from it then I see it working, even if it is a bit of a fan service.

But, it still is fan service. Good, bad or otherwise.

No doubt more work-hungry actors who were in 24th Century Trek will be going round coventions pointing out they would like to return!! :P
