Will movie herald creation of new generation of 'Neo-Trekkers'?

It strikes me that TNGers, Niners, Voyagers and the like are all labels by which people tend to self-identify, perhaps because [that show] was the one which was in original run when they first started getting into Trek. By contrast, the proposed "Neo-Trekkers" would be a label applied to one group by members of another, as a way of establishing that "those people are different from us" and emphasizing separation rather than inclusion. Seems a little unfriendly and unwelcoming, doesn't it?
Yeah, that sounds very plausible. (And is also much more eloquently put than what I could ever have written.)

Pfft, we don't have to count them, do we? :p
You see, that attitude is why they will never make you the mod of the ENT forum. :p

It was more or less underlining what you had already written.

You mean it's working?

M', likes Enterprise, but finds the thought of moderating the 'shippy stuff a little frightening

When the film opens and if it's a big hit this place is gonna be flodded with thousands of Pointless posts about Kirks hair or Spocks eyebrows. *shivers* Neo Newbs.

Agreed Academic. Our ultimate goal should be drawing them deeper into the fold, not pushing them out.

How we treat them will reflect on the franchise as a whole. We owe it to Trek to put our best face's on for the Newbies. How we treat them could lead to more Trek dollars for Paramount as they begin buying into all the classic Trek productions. That could equal more new Trek projects for us all.
I agree. With more people, the fan base becomes stronger. More voices towards petitions when the timing is right.

I've met a few people who got started on TNG and then went back to explore TOS. I only recall one who thought it was crap and could care less about it. To him, "Picard" was the first real captain of the Enterprise (he was also quite young, so the lame effects took its toll as well). For everyone else, it was an interest in "finding the roots of Star Trek." Sci-fi archaeology.

Anyway, it's too early to tell what'll happen. Speculation can only go so far. And the countdown is coming to a close... :)

More Trekkies? Why not? Hopefully the new movie will be so popular that we'll need to include a new sub-forum to answer all n00b Trekkie queries.

I myself am still wondering if the whole "Star Trek is now cool, so we'll get legions of new fans" is really going to work out. I mean, I sure hope it will, but I fear somehow that despite exciting trailers and massive marketing exposure, the name Star Trek alone will keep people away.

But then again, who knows? I joined this board during the excitement of the ENT premiere (yes, there was excitement back then! ;) ), so there might as well be new people here come May 8th...

What this movie REALLY needs to do is attract a new-generation of fans who also happen to be HOT LOOKING CHICS...

The funniest line from that CONAN OBRIEN show, when the talking dog interviews that pregnant lady waiting in line for the new Star Wars movie with a bunch of Star wars nerds? Is when he (the dog) notices she is pregnant and she tells him it will be a boy...to which the dog responds "Well, I hope he gets a good look at your vagina on the way out..its the last time that poor little nerd will ever see one"

I've heard that NERDS make the best lovers....they are very accommodating, they have HUGE sex organs (thier brains) and will do whatever, whenever and however long you like it ! ;) Now this is just what I've heard since I've never went out with a Nerd.....yet.

I'll always welcome new trekkies to the fold, the more the merrier. That said however I don't think there will be to many long term fans created by this film. Sure we'll get some who have enough interest to stick around after the film's been out for a while and they might even have enough interest to view the rest of the material. The vast majority of this films patrons however will, whether they enjoyed it or not, most likely forget it within a week of seeing it. Unfortunate in my mind but I hope I'm wrong.

If this board is any indication, this new movie will hopefully create a lot of addition by subtraction.

I expect y'all to remember this 'all fans are equal' 'the more the merrier' attitude when the new wave of Kirk/Spock slashers crests. Seriously, I'll be holding ye to it. :p

Simple, I don't view those threads.

I hear you though, it ain't always going to be easy but we should at least try to differentiate the sincere & honest noobs from the inevitable new trolls it'll bring in.

Help the good and cast the bad ones into the Fan Pit!

Paramount doesn't need to created "neo-Trekkers" in order for this movie and its sequels to be successful - just a lot of enthusiastic and satisfied movie-goers, and so far all indications are that they're on track to accomplish that.

It's like thinking that Warners needed Nolan to create a new generation of kids who wanted to dance the "Batusi" in order for their new Batman films to succeed.

They're sure seems to be a lot of people here hoping this movie will make it respectable and acceptable to be a Trekkie. I'm hoping it's a good movie and if so gets enough people to see it for another whether they talk about it all the time or not. I've never seen a Transporter or Fast and Furious BBS and they managed to crank out a number of those. I think Star Wars aside it's rare for movies to open themselves to raving fans the way TV series do with all the focus on characters (sometimes because there isn't muche else going on) and those hours of things to obsess over.

An equally important question is if this movie will help get rid of some of the anal, self-righteous and embarrassing existing fans of Trek.

One can only hope.

Except for the "embarrassing" fans - I aint' goin' nowhere.

Guess we'll have self-righteous as well.;)
