Will movie herald creation of new generation of 'Neo-Trekkers'?

Any wanker who decides to call themselves a Trek fan just because they like this movie will be considered a poser by me. And I consider posers to be less than human.

Come on, mate, don't be such a harsh judge.
Give the nippers a chance. Take them under your wings, share your vast knowledge with them, be their mentor. They might turn out all right!

You might be onto something there. My knowledge of what Trek truly is and what it should be is vast and unquestionable. I do have much to teach them. But I would decide when they can call themselves a fan, and it will be well after they've seen more than this movie.

Besides, thanks to a gross oversight by Abrams and Cohorts, anyone introduced to Trek via this movie won't know who Dr. M'Benga is. I don't see how anyone can call themselves a Trek fan without knowing who Dr. M'Benga is.

Your modesty is your most endearing trait... besides your vast and unquestionable knowledge, of course. :techman:

One has to ask, why the need to label and differentiate fans: old, new, purist, non-purest, canon, non-canon, etc...?
What purpose/need does it fulfill for those who think they need to label others?

W.W.G.R.D.? (What Would Gene Roddenberry Do?)

;)

I think nuBSG has been influencing us more lately than XI.

That said, irregardless of which of the many Star Trek productions brings them into the series, they are all fans, all equal. Most new fans will follow the same in the same cycle as the old ones, loving the Trek that got them addicted and closely scrutinizing all that follows.
This has all happened before.......

BTW, the "neo-trekker" nomenclature = mega dumb. the last thing you want to do is exclude people who want to be trekkies. the irony is a little too rich.

Trek fans? A divided group? Never. :rommie:

In all seriousness, I agree. 'Trek' is all about acceptance, tolerance, and the IDIC. Not the IamaDICK.

If this does happen, I insist that we refer to these people as 'Neo-Trekkers' - just to differentiate them from older fans.

Yes. After all, what's a little more division amongst Trek fans? :guffaw:

as far as i am concerned about 95 percent of you all are neo trekkers..
:p

even though i suspect most of you all dont fly through the air of some alt reality simulation while dressed in black.

Agreed Academic. Our ultimate goal should be drawing them deeper into the fold, not pushing them out.

How we treat them will reflect on the franchise as a whole. We owe it to Trek to put our best face's on for the Newbies. How we treat them could lead to more Trek dollars for Paramount as they begin buying into all the classic Trek productions. That could equal more new Trek projects for us all.

You can't really fault anyone for loving their 01st Trek movie.

Hmmm...What was that name we gave to all those new Star Trek fans that came on board after 1987 because of TNG?

I remember now -- Star Trek fans.
I dont know, I seem to remember things such as TNGers, Niners, Voyagers, etc ;)
But then again, all of them are Star Trek fans. All of these names just express a particular affectation for one of the series. Neo-Trekkers implies that they aren't legit Trek fans at all. At least the term sounds that way to me.

Oh, and you forgot about the NX-01ers. ;)

It strikes me that TNGers, Niners, Voyagers and the like are all labels by which people tend to self-identify, perhaps because [that show] was the one which was in original run when they first started getting into Trek. By contrast, the proposed "Neo-Trekkers" would be a label applied to one group by members of another, as a way of establishing that "those people are different from us" and emphasizing separation rather than inclusion. Seems a little unfriendly and unwelcoming, doesn't it?

Oh, and you forgot about the NX-01ers. ;)
Pfft, we don't have to count them, do we? :p
