Yeah, that sounds very plausible. (And is also much more eloquently put than what I could ever have written.)It strikes me that TNGers, Niners, Voyagers and the like are all labels by which people tend to self-identify, perhaps because [that show] was the one which was in original run when they first started getting into Trek. By contrast, the proposed "Neo-Trekkers" would be a label applied to one group by members of another, as a way of establishing that "those people are different from us" and emphasizing separation rather than inclusion. Seems a little unfriendly and unwelcoming, doesn't it?
You see, that attitude is why they will never make you the mod of the ENT forum.Pfft, we don't have to count them, do we?![]()

Most folks? There are a lot of folks here who weren't even born when that business started. It's practically ancient history now.I would've thought the Trekkie/Trekker debacle would be enough for most folks.
Oh? Is he militantly one or the other?(This is a test to see if Gabe Koerner is still around...)
I haven't seen it, no. I hide my head in shame (though I did first do a quick search for quotes before posting, thinking it might have been intentional.)Have you not seen the first "Trekkies" movie?
In other words, that typo was deliberate.
I agree. With more people, the fan base becomes stronger. More voices towards petitions when the timing is right.Agreed Academic. Our ultimate goal should be drawing them deeper into the fold, not pushing them out.
How we treat them will reflect on the franchise as a whole. We owe it to Trek to put our best face's on for the Newbies. How we treat them could lead to more Trek dollars for Paramount as they begin buying into all the classic Trek productions. That could equal more new Trek projects for us all.
I myself am still wondering if the whole "Star Trek is now cool, so we'll get legions of new fans" is really going to work out. I mean, I sure hope it will, but I fear somehow that despite exciting trailers and massive marketing exposure, the name Star Trek alone will keep people away.
But then again, who knows? I joined this board during the excitement of the ENT premiere (yes, there was excitement back then!), so there might as well be new people here come May 8th...
What this movie REALLY needs to do is attract a new-generation of fans who also happen to be HOT LOOKING CHICS...
The funniest line from that CONAN OBRIEN show, when the talking dog interviews that pregnant lady waiting in line for the new Star Wars movie with a bunch of Star wars nerds? Is when he (the dog) notices she is pregnant and she tells him it will be a boy...to which the dog responds "Well, I hope he gets a good look at your vagina on the way out..its the last time that poor little nerd will ever see one"

I expect y'all to remember this 'all fans are equal' 'the more the merrier' attitude when the new wave of Kirk/Spock slashers crests. Seriously, I'll be holding ye to it.![]()

An equally important question is if this movie will help get rid of some of the anal, self-righteous and embarrassing existing fans of Trek.
One can only hope.
Except for the "embarrassing" fans - I aint' goin' nowhere.
