Why would Lore want Data's emotion chip?

As I stated, I was answering strictly to the title, not paying attention to what was previously said.
That is the premise of the OP... well... the other part of it. Why would he want & why would he want it in him? or let it be installed into his own systems? I've no clue what everyone else was on about in here, probably android rights or whatnot lol

Basically it's a whole different concern to want to use it, as it is to just deprive Data of it (which we already kind of know why he'd do that. He hates & is jealous of Data) That he'd use it himself leads you to all sorts of other assumptions about how he views himself, imho, leading to some of my earlier comments

Okay, I just rewatched Brothers :D
But to be honest, even if he gets the chip installed, I'm not sure Lore wanted to use it. If you lemme explain...

I tend to believe it was more a theatrical way to steal the chip while causing as much harm as possible to Noonien. Like making him think he's giving a wonderful gift to his youngest son, letting him hope and feel happiness, before Lore reveals the truth and shatters Noonien's hope in his fist.
Lore is a lot like that - very theatrical and grandiloquent. He loves playing with others' nerves and feelings. He blossoms in manipulation. It's totally possible that just stealing the emochip 'normally' would have been not flamboyant enough according to Lore, so he made up some plan to get revenge with panache. It's totally like him !

Or maybe he thought that getting the emochip would allow him to access to a new range of emotions and/or sensations. He does say before he teleports himself :
I don't know exactly what it's doing, but it's doing something.
It's impossible to know if it's just another lie, though. So we can only make assumptions.

I truly doubt Lore ever wanted to be 'fixed', and I don't believe he wanted the chip for that purpose. His megalomanic attitude makes me think he already considers himself perfect enough and wouldn't aknowledge his flaws anyway. Besides, I'm pretty sure his unethical behaviours and choices were cause by software anomaly rather than a hardware problem. So how could he be sure the chip would get rid of it ? The emochip probably has its own in-built softwares designed to interact with the rest of the positronic brain, so they could conflict with his current settings. What would be the point of risking software conflicts for something he already possesses ?

(1) He wants to deprive Data of the chip. He has a huge gripe with both Soong and Data, and resents all the care and attention Soong's giving Data. So he snatches away the special chip Data gets for being so very special.... Sure, Lore has one like it already, but selfishness and paranoia cloud reason.
(2) He may also want the doubling of emotional intensity much like someone craves a drug. He wants to go on an emotional roller coaster ride.

They really should have explored this later on. That one line was setting things up for that I thought..."I don't know exactly what it's doing, but it's doing something." What kind of being results, when feeling is massively increased?

Agreed. I think they threw Lore away way too easily. I'd have wanted a deep story arc about Lore and Data, with a chance to discover the reasons behind Lore's behaviours and actions. And they could have brought B-4 in the show instead of having him only in a movie. I'd have loved to discover more about Soong Type Androids technology instead of everything being cut so fast...
Besides, didn't Data leave Noonien's works and books when he left Terlina ? There would be massive fuel for later development just with one of Noonien's research book !

Why wouldn't he want it?

Hell, *I* want the chip...the applications are limitless. I'd love my PVR to feel shame when it screws up a recording. Don't even get me started on the coffee maker....inconsiderate bastard.

The emochip doesn't make non sentient, lifeless objects become magically sentient. It's intended for artificial, positronic lifeforms who already possess sentience.

You must love the toaster, and sing to the toaster.

Yeah okay. You know what ?
Maybe I'm over sensitive on the issue, but I'm getting deeply annoyed and tired of people always using that old toaster insult every single time there's a Soong Type Android discussion happening.
Will I ever see a day when we can discuss androids without having people come here just to troll by insulting them ? Like, do we android fans come on other topics to call humans 'meat bags filled with blood and mucus' ?? Do I come on topics just to call men 'd*cks that walk' ?
I'm so fed up !

Whatever the flaw in his design, Lore actually admits it, & appears genuinely upset by it
Lore said:
But why didn't you fix me? It was within your power to fix me.
Lore said:
You didn't fill Data with substandard parts. That honor was bestowed upon me
Soong also seems pretty concerned that the circuits would be problematic, as they weren't designed for Lore. I'd say Lore is definitely using it in some way, & the most likely reason is out of spite for Soong, & the assumption that he's already flawed, & upset about it, & that there'll likely be no other chance for him to be corrected. So he's wiiling to do this. It's crazy, but what else is there?

Oh wow. The dialogues are TOTALLY different in French ! ! So no wonder we don't have the same views about Lore's reasons to steal the chip !

 I would've never known that. That could mean you've been watching an ever so slightly different show that me! :vulcan:

BTW, if you ever want a decent TNG dialog resource. I use this one sometimes

http://www.st-minutiae.com/resources/scripts/

Bear in mind though. These are mostly preproduction scripts. So there are some things in there that didn't make the episodes (Which is pretty neat too)

Oh thank you !
I use that website : http://www.chakoteya.net/NextGen/episodes.htm
I never checked if it matched the actual dialogues, though, as I almost never watch episodes in English.

If I have enough time this week, I'll probably rewatch Brothers again and note down what the dialogues between Noonien and Lore are like in French, if you're interested ;)

Are you saying my PVR isn't sentient? I've explained your concerns to it and it got very upset and deleted all my "Forged in fire" episodes. Thanks a lot.

If anyone knows a good PVR psychiatrist (other than a large mallet) I'd appreciate it.

Perhaps a very large axe to give it a reprogramming it won't forget.
