Why weren't the Changelings explored in more detail?

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
i can't be the only one thinking this.

i was watching the episode 'chimera' where a changeling was flying through space. i have to admit, and say at first i thought it was some kind of biological space 'worm'. was it ever mentioned how quickly they can travel through space? they'd have to be the most powerful beings outside the 'Q', right? there's no chance Data could overpower a changeling. what could stop a changeling in a fight? an experienced one, lets say. how large can a changeling expand itself? what are some of the most menacing forms a changeling can take? could it turn itself into a poison? i've never really read the ST books so maybe they talk about it in there.

then i see this more experienced changeling have the ability to not only fly through space, but also turn into fire and fog. to me, it was amazing. the scene with the 2 klingons and how calmly and easily lars disposed of the two klingons. "mine's bigger." haha.

we never really got to see the extent of their abilities as Odo was still an infant in comparison to the over 200 year old lars. looking back on ENT now, it seems they wasted a huge opportunity with the changelings. it would have been simply brilliant to see one of the hundred changelings that were sent out as Odo mentions 'the past few centuries'. so why didn't we see it on ENT? they wouldn't have had to call it 'a changeling', but use another word so it doesn't disrupt canon. that way their abilities could have been expanded even more.

i wasn't expecting much from this episode, but it was really great. awesome production quality, too.

OTOH, ENT avoided a lame rehash by not just doing "Chimera" in the 22nd century.

I don't think Ent is the place to explore the changelings. We should have learned more about them as a species and not just their hunger for power to control everyone else. But keeping them mysterious was also a strong element to their power. The Borg were explored umpteen times until any Tom Dick and Harry could write a way to destroy the collective and by the end of Voyager they were about as scary as a stuffed toy with a toy phaser.

It would have been very cool to have the Federation or section31 use our own changelings to infiltrate them. We have allasamorphs and metamorphs in the federation, theres proabably a lot more species. Obviously it wouldnt be possible for them to turn into liquid and link with the founders, but it would have been interesting to see the Founders react to a tatse of their own medicine.

yea, i was thinking something like this where they're more explored as a species. not as just the enemy.

Some parts of the Founders' back story were not complete. I kind of figure that their society is one with little secrets, and almost total openness. It figures since in the Great Link, everything is shared. Also, it would have been good to see how Changelings reproduce, and if they have any art or music. I guess even this would be shared in the Link.
