Why was the ending of ST 6 changed on the blu-ray?

I must confess I've never gotten around to getting and watching the 2004 Special Edition with the faces, either.
Since that is considered the Director's Cut, this means that the 4K release will have that version, and the theatrical version, but not the funky home video version. So the home video version will never have been released in high definition. I guess that might bother some completists, or those who like the Scooby-Doo ending and other assorted inserts, but not the faces during the mind meld. Oh well.

If the 4K versions of each are available, I'll make my own version.

There was a time I didn't even know that Admiral Cartright was Brock Peters. Seeing his face would have helped the younger me connect the two despite all the times his name was mentioned in the meeting. Plus I like the way it was edited. Hope they bring the sound effects back.

I don't understand. How does showing the faces of the conspirators after they say who they are make it obvious too soon that she doesn't know where the conference is?

The scene and meld are probing and probably showing her memory, showing she quickly knows and admits who the conspirators are, then not showing any visual like of a place makes it pretty clear she doesn't know where it is.

Or she's still just refusing to cooperate.

Nothing she's given Spock up to that point is (necessarily) admissible in court, given the telepathic nature in which it was extracted from her. It would still be he said she said. But giving up the location allows them to intervene.

The images (not her memory btw) only show after she and Spock says them. She never says the location, so not showing it means nothing. And then we learn just moments later she doesn't know the location.
