Why isn't Tron out on DVD?

The sequel comes out next month and the first movie isn't out on DVD? Wouldn't now be a good time to put it out there? To get the people who, you know, haven't seen the 30 year old movie to get an idea of what it is about before going to see the sequel?

I know Disney has their heads in their ass with "the vault" (seriously, Disney, knock it the fuck off with that) but why not release it now?!

Yep I'm planning on watching the Tron 20th Anniversary edition DVD before "Tron:Legacy" comes out next month. Cinema Blend had a humorous article regarding the apparent lack of Tron DVD's available.

I heard that Disney is holding the re-release (including a new Blu-Ray) until TRON LEGACY comes out on home video, because their audience data showed that audiences were much more nostalgic (and interested in seeing TRON LEGACY) when they hadn't seen the first film in a long time.

All I could find is this, which, admittedly, is mostly speculation. But it doesn't seem far from the realm of possibility at all:

Err, it is on DVD. I picked up the 20th Anniversary Edition on DVD awhile back.

While it is possible to obtain older editions of the movie on DVD, it isn't currently "in print." Netflix doesn't have it available for rental. Amazon.com doesn't have it in stock, though it has links to other vendors that have used or rare copies for high prices. I've requested a copy from my library, but they're all checked out and I don't know how long the waiting list will be. This is definitely a case where the demand exceeds the supply.

It seems to make sense, though, in this case. Disney figures that most people who'd want to own TRON on DVD already bought it when the Anniversary Edition was released a few years ago, and would rather eliminate as much potential harm to the sequel's box office as they think the original might cause.

I'm not sure I buy Disney's logic that seeing TRON will decrease audiences for TRON LEGACY, but if one subscribes to that line of thinking, holding the re-release of the original is a smart move.

I bought my copy of the 20th anniversary edition in an HMV about a year ago, so it's not that rare. Unless you live in the boondocks I'd recommend calling around to local shops - both new-release and shops selling PV copies - before starting to pay collector prices for this. Same goes for other Disney "vault" releases, which don't magically vanish regardless what Disney says (though to the best of my knowledge the so-called "vault" policy ONLY applies to Disney animated films. As far as I'm aware, for example, the Mary Poppins DVD never disappeared, except for a new edition coming out a year or so ago).

Ever since Tron Legacy was announced I knew Disney would release Tron on Blu-Ray at the same time Tron Legacy arrived on Blu-Ray, so that it can do a 2-pak, and also produce new bonus features ie interviews with the original cast since most of them were back for the sequel. I did half expect a Christmas-season reissue, though. But I guess they're going to wait.

Hopefully we'll see a Black Hole Blu-ray release before long, too (and yes it's been on DVD for years, too).

Yeah, it has been released. But the dvd is also out of print and nearly impossible to find in stores/online for a cheap price. You have a bunch of bastard scalpers on Amazon selling it new for $100 alone.

Disney is the only studio that I know that always does this with their movies. It is the reason why I downloaded the Lion King and burned it to dvd since I couldn't find it any where that wasn't selling them for outrageous prices. Fucking Disney!

I seem to recall that, in the months prior to Salvation, there was a distinct lack of Terminator DVDs out on the shelves -- and I looked, too. Though I don't think it was to the extent that we see for TRON, I do think the film studios are deliberately withholding reissues prior to new flicks. Why? Who the heck knows.

i was wanting to watch the original and refresh my memory and haven't been able to find a copy either. its insanely expensive on half.com and ebay. i assumed Disney would release a new edition when Tron Legacy comes out but it doesn't look like it.

I'm not wanting to own Tron, but I was hoping to see it before seeing Legacy because it's been since I was maybe 4 since I saw it last. I hope there is someway the DVD will become available to rent before Legacy comes out (Or even put the movie On Demand) because I want to see it to get a reference for the new movie. Holding it until after the movie comes out and then waiting until Legacy comes to DVD seems a bit counter intuitive.
