Why has it become cool to hate Star Trek fans?

Everytime someone opens a thread expressing even the MILDEST complaint about what they know about this movie the same dozen or so forum regulars JUMP ON THEM with posts like "OMG!!! YOU STUPID TREKKIE ALL YOU CARE ABOUT IS CONTINUITY, GROW UP, PEOPLE WHO HAVE SEX LIKE ME DON'T CARE ABOUT CANON OR RONDEBERRY IN FACT I HOPE THE MOVIE CHANGES EVERYTHING JUST TO ANGER UP YOUR BLOOD FURTHER, HAHAHA, STUPID TREKKIE, STAR TREK ISN'T FOR YOU!" It doesn't matter if their concern is perfectly valid or even if it's nothing to do with continuity errors (yes it's possible to think the Enterprise being built on the ground in Iowa is lame WITHOUT caring that it's a break of canon) they still get the same almost bullying response, as if they should be made to feel ashamed for caring about Star Trek.

What's funny is that the people posting these attacks are obviously Trekkers too, so why are they so mean? Is it because they were picked on in school and now they're acting out revenge by picking on Trek fans themselves!?

Maybe there should be a partition down the middle of every threatre when this movie comes out: one side for people who love Transformers and Lost In Space and just want to see stuff blow up and snappy action dialogue and one side for those who care about quality and watch with a more critical eye.

If you could articulate a topic, I'd be happy to reply to it.

I see a mixture of rant, transference and then a rather lame attempt at a put-down at the end which is pretty much "why do you still beat your wife?"

* Because trekfans go dressed like vulcans and andorians, keep talking about nacelles and bridge's new look, the tv only shows this, and others fans don´t like be portrait like "nerds never-fuck". A typical trekfan group is formed from five guys and one little fat girl dressed in black. They only talk about nacelles while all try do the little fat girl. Along the time, it´s hurt the Star Trek image so badly. The new movie is the last chance to revert this image.

Well, I don't really like posting but I do like to read through threads. I've seen a lot of people on other forums and message boards moaning about the fact that J.J. Abrams has "ruined Star Trek". Grasping at the straws of canon, afraid of something new.

To be honest, it annoys me slightly. The point of this film is that it is soppost to be new, and fresh, and hold canon to a point. J.J. Abrams wanted to remind viewers that Star Trek isn't far from being a reality (sure, maybe NOT exactly the way Gene invisioned it, but the space travel element).

Also I'd like to point out that J.J. Abrams has already stated that they have been filming in Iowa for Kirk's childhood, the Enterprise is being build in San Fransisco, on Earth, which is canon I believe.

STOP IT!! YER KILLIN' ME, HARLOCK!!! :guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

I think it's become pretty obvious by now that there are two major groups of Star Trek fans.

For the first group, Star Trek is first and foremost a source of entertainment. They enjoy the series, the movies, the books, the games, etc... because they find them fun, entertaining, clever, thought-provoking or what have you. In other words, they enjoy Star Trek for the same reasons they enjoy other movies and series. Most of the fans belonging to the first group seem to feel very optimistic about the new movie, because from what they've seen or heard of so far, it seems to be the kind of movie they would enjoy.

For the second group, Star Trek is first and foremost a hobby. They enjoy the series, the movies, the books, the games, etc... because they all belong to the same universe, follow the same rules and paint a wider canvas than any single movie ever could. In other words, they enjoy the whole Star Trek universe more than they enjoy individual episodes or movies. Most of the fans belonging to the second group seem to feel betrayed by the new movie, because it's too different from what they've been used to call "Star Trek".

For some reason, fans from one group seem to ignore the existence of the other group, and find anything they say irrelevant.

Well just think, we have 6 months of:

"It's not canon, it's not going to be good"

"It's fresh and looks great, yes it will!"

"It's not canon!!"

"Nobody cares!"

Says the guy who is first and foremost known for fornicating with relatives, married women, retarded chicks and what-have-you. Now do not get me wrong, this is all fine and dandy and most certainly VERY entertaining to laugh at your misery, but it hardly qualifies you to, well, let's say...take the moral high-ground on something, if you catch my drift.

Thusly, I bide you farewell with the most urgent advice to please go and fornicate with someone you are not supposed to fornicate.

She's mine!

Kroykah!

:guffaw: That response is too funny, NCC-1701

Let's see, Trek fans are geeky, socially maladjusted, and obsessed with the product. Hmm. That's the premise. As opposed to someone who spends far more than he should as a percentage of his income to buy season tickets in the nose-bleed section so he can watch his favorite NFL team in 30 degree weather while shirtless with his body painted in his team colors, drink himself silly, yell at the referees, ogle the cheerleaders, and throw up in the parking lot after the game before passing out in his car until he's sobered up enough to drive home?

He spends the week tweaking his fantasy roster and calling sports-talk shows to rant while he should be working. Then he goes to the stadium next Sunday to do it all over again.

But he's not a geek. He's just a big sports fan.

CaptainHarlock, Google "ecological fallacy" and "stereotype."
