Why dose Starfleet medical and science share a common uniform configuration?

Considering that DSci's and such are a thing I would suggest that the answer is an empathic no as far as being a scientist goes, though it's a little more complicated as far as being a researcher.

These days, hospitals often use scrub colors to differentiate the type of staff. This makes it easier for patients to ID what staff members are entering their room.

Nope. The uniforms were the same colour for both medical and science, it's just that guest science characters often had newer costumes so weren't as faded/off-colour as the main medical characters.

They seem to have retconned the light blue of McCoy's smock as the medical color.

And I'm fine with that, though I think having another separate colour (white) for nurses is excessive.

I'd prefer that white was used for Senior Command Officers (Commanders and above at XO level or greater*) as in the "Monster Maroon" era and that they brought the Bridge/General Duties officers (Helm/Nav/Tactical, Admin, Comms, Security) back into "gold" rather than lumping them in with the engineers and other technical staff.

* I'd be fine with green as alternative, particularly for every-day wear.

In the alt timeline future of "Quality of Mercy" Chapel is in blue and I think all the medical personnel are also in blue. Does white mean civilian and blue Starfleet?
