Why do you rank TFF highly?

It has some highly effective moments of cinematic direction (Sybok riding to J'onn in the pre-credits).
It has very good scenes between the characters Shatner had to care about. Aside from the campfire, Kelley is amazing in McCoy's flashback.
And Luckinball is good.

But plot poor, treatment of supporting characters poor, and the big fx shots Shatner wanted but couldn't afford would be dwarfed by modern CGI, remembered only as "They did that before CGI?"
As mentioned above, the FX was affordable but the prime FX companies were not available at the time for post production. As for the teaser of V, I thought it wasn't effective enough to engage me into the plot. Maybe if I saw a ship who attempted to travel through the Great Barrier and failed for whatever reasons being it would've hooked me. I would have some concern because the new Enterprise will eventually face such a giant challenge, which in the proceedings of the movie it wasn't much of a challenge to get through.

I would've love to know McCoy's personal perspective of God, and how it effected his relationships with his family; whether going into the alien medical field cascaded his beliefs? What would it mean to him if he could actually meet God? How would those ambitions be an obstacle to Kirk and the mission? The concept of finding God is a lofty one but you have to have the right kind of creators to make it work. Shatner, unfortunately, was not that guy.

It is a fun and nostalgic movie for me, despite all the flaws it just has a certain "something" :mallory:

The only reason to watch the movie? Caithlin Dar. Kick started my Romulan obsession.

It would've been a nice addition to the movie if the Romulans had more involvement in the plot. A Vulcan/ Romulan alliance in a twisted way.

She was a tertiary character in an almost completely forgettable role. And she carried /exhibited no traits whatsoever of the Romulan race. Heck, they didn't even show her pointed ears. I'm not sure I understand.

Can't remember if I've posted and don't feel like combing to see. I really enjoyed the novelization so that helped me a lot, but beyond that I liked Sybok, I liked a lot of the character interaction with Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. I thought, at the time especially, that a search for God felt very Star Trek to me, something epic. I also liked some of the pasts Sybok's power exposed (in particular Sarek's callous disregard for infant Spock), and Kirk's declaration that he needs his pain. That came raw out of Shatner, a powerful moment. I also liked the three diplomats and the idea of Nimbus III. I've even used Nimbus III in my fan fiction and made one of my characters a relative to Caithlin Dar.

I wish DISCO had used Sybok in Season 2. He should've been helping Spock investigate the Red Angel. It seemed fit for the character. And it would've also been neat to see what kind of relationship Burnham and Sybok would've had. Perhaps a good one, with him appreciating her humanity, or a vexing one, with her trying to be more Vulcan while he was thumbing his nose at many Vulcan customs.

Crusher Disciple is attracted to this actress and her portraying a non-typical architype Romulan and became an interest in Romulans. Every person has a genesis for liking something, and it doesn't have to be story or production design or an academy award performance; a person sees a subject and whatever reasons it clicked.

Hence my liking of Pike from just the Menagerie, prefer R5 over R2 and Y wings over X wings after watching the first Star Wars.

McCoy is my favorite character in all of Trek, and Dee gets a lot of great moments in V, including his absolutely amazing delivery of the line, “If you ask me ... and you haven’t ... I think this is a terrible idea.”

The way he leans in and smiles at Kirk when he says it breaks me up.

Everything about his performance in the observation lounge is gold as well.
It sickens me to this day that he was nominated for a Razzie award for TFF. Total bullshit.

Who says I rank TFF highly?

OK, one reason I might do so is simply on the basis of personal rewatch value: since TFF is an OK but not the greatest Star Trek movie, I haven’t watched it as often as some of the other films, especially TWOK. Sometimes I would start a run with TMP and forget where I paused it, so I’m thinking the next time I’d better open with TSFS instead.

(TFF also happens to be memorable as the first Star Trek movie I ever saw, specifically on its “free” TV premiere in Germany on June 25, 1993. The table also reminds me precisely when I watched it again, along with all the previous TOS films for the first time.)

That’s ridiculous. But I’ve often thought the Razzies erred on the side of too-cool bullying, nominating stuff that is trendy to bash or easy targets. So I can’t say I’m surprised they’d target Trek.

No, I wouldn't say so. The acting wasn't the issue in this film. The story and visual effects were.

I would actually argue strongly that the story was not an issue. Was the script / execution of the core story an issue? Yes. But the story itself was typical Star Trek fare and holds up just fine. Unfortunately, the execution of the story, via the script and a number of production elements, suffers badly in places.
