Why do people criticise ST so much ?

According to a quick Google search, there are 726 episodes in 30 seasons of 6 shows (TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT), as well as 11 feature films with 3 primary casts. This doesn't begin to mention several hundred original novels, computer games, board games, television commercials, and a ton of other things.

Is it that hard to believe that a franchise of such sprawling proportions would produce material that wouldn't appeal to everybody (or, anybody, see VOY: Threshold)?

Yep! And I own all of them on DVD. Now to find time to watch all this stuff! ;)

I like Threshold. :)

Anyway, it's true that few fans are going to like everything, but that doesn't explain the immense hatred fans have for the stuff they don't like or the irrational anger when someone hates something they like. Trekkies really need to chill out and realize it's just a TV show.

This.

Including Threshold.

I have good theory based on how I might look at some Star trek series;

An example- When TNG was on the air, it was THE thing at the time.

Then later, after DS9, and Voy aired, and a lot of time passes by, you look back at the same series and you see the missed opportunities, the fear of taking risks, or how "dated" it was.

And then when you look at a current Trek series or movies, and they take it in a totally different direction and it isn't popular, it's easy to criticize them for the waisted time and effort.

I actually like a little of everything from the different series, it's like diffeent flavors of ice cream to me.

I'm glad we have at least 5 shows to watch instead of just watching 3 seasons of TOS reruns endlessly.

I'm not as much a fan of Enterprise, but every now and then I find myself straying to watch an episode, which ironically is how I started watching Trek in the first place.
